The South Side, which was formerly known as Birmingham, was annexed to the city in 1872 and settled by Germans and Eastern European immigrants who worked in the heavy industry - including the nearby Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (J&L Steel).
Today, the site of J&L Steel is home to South Side Works which features national retail and restaurant chains, a marina, a movie theater and an amphitheater.
