You must be crazy - this place is excellent!

And always is... I've been returning to this lovely tree-house for years! I spoke with the owner about the previous review from Kristin B. and learned that this guest checked in immediately following the hurricane that almost devastated Hilton Head! Why did she go? She may have been happier in her safe little world somewhere else. Apparently, the house experienced some water damage to the ground floor, which was not noticed until this person check-in. If it were me, I would have moved units immediately rather than staying miserable. And, yes, the mosquitos were bad during my visit, but are not usually like that - must be the fact that Hilton Head was under water from the hurricane. I'm sure it will be better upon my next visit..... which I cannot wait for!

The house has a most amazing view, and the furnishings are very comfortable. I instantly relax every time I arrive! I like the new bathroom the owner put in since my last stay too - looks great Tricia! (You do a great job with maintenance (as the previous bathroom was totally renovated a year prior.)) Everything we have ever needed is right there too. The location is remote, but not too remote. We rent bikes and cruise the island - great fun!

After reading the negative reviews on this house and others, I've concluded there are some very unhappy people out there that really need a vacation (clearly), but just haven't found the place that will help them get to a happier state. This is a special house with an atypical structure - not for everyone. For me, I shall just ignore them and keep enjoying life and the beauty it has to offer.... from my favorite tree house on Hilton Head.

Westside story as told by Mosquitos

I learned a valuable lesson from renting this unit: I would not have survived the Vietnam war had I been of age and sent there to fight.

First thing we noticed was the smell. Given that the unit is on stilts its not likely to have sat in water very long and there were no signs of standing water. Plus, I don't think that floods could be responsible for the smell of pure evil that emanated from the horrifying carpets. Imagine 1000 cats eating the most virulent asparagus ever grown by man and then those same cats were only allowed to relieve themselves on the carpet in this place. We went to the Publix and bought all the Febreze and scented candles they had, didn't help. It actually kept us awake at night. The heat inside the place didn't help either. It was sweltering, even at night. We tried our best to keep cool, but we couldn't even open the windows. Which was probably a good thing.

This brings me to my next point... You know how it is when you are walking in a city and you don't know the neighborhoods, you look up and you are in a BAD area. I mean scaaaary. You might not notice the unsavory types stalking you at first. While we were unpacking we were focused and moving quickly. The next morning when I went out to the car I had to walk through the local gang's territory. They were striped, had wings, and a proboscis that they used frequently. I swear they were a foot long. Scientific name Stegomyia Albopicta, aka the Asian Tiger Mosquito. Before I knew it I was wearing 15 of them, literally and honestly. I have never in my 42 years seen this many aggressive mosquitos in one place. I am the proud owner of probably 35-40 bites as I type this. And they were coordinated too. At one point they reenacted the Sharks and the Jets fight scene from West Side Story. They were pretty good. We only lost about a quart of blood while we watched.

They were so bad that when we decided we had had enough and were going to leave a day early we planned to throw everything in the car and make a run for the parking lot down the road to rearrange the luggage and assure the bikes were strapped down appropriately. We didn't even want to take the time in the parking space at the unit since we knew we would be attacked. They even made it home with us in our car, biting us the whole way.

I would feel embarrassed if this unit were mine and no amount of maintenance would fix this short of gutting the place or burning it to the ground.

Owner's Response: Hilton Head is still recovering from Hurricane Mathew with winds of over 100 miles per hour and a storm surge that surrounded the lower level of our villa. This was the most severe storm to ever strike Hilton Heads coast. Over 10% of the homes on the island suffered signifiant damage. Your visit was within days of when residents and guests were allowed back on the island. The storm hit November the 8th and it was 5 days before owners, evacuees and guests were allowed back on the island. Our management company was giving full refunds to those guests who chose not to come and were accommodating moves to other villas for those who found their units to have issues. Our management company did not hear from you nor did I. Or, we would have offered to refund your money or another villa. There is still standing water everywhere and the mosquitoes will continue to be a problem through out the low country until emergency crews reach a point in removing dangerous debris and town officials can organize the spraying necessary. This is a national disaster area, as declared by the President. Tens of thousands of trees were downed and many locals are homeless. Hilton Head strong will come back but it will take a few weeks at best. Progress has been amazing. Our villa will have a new roof as a result of the storm and new carpeting has been ordered as well. Had the management company or I been notified during your visit of any problems we would have done our best to correct them.

Think twice about this rental. Needs a lot of work and updates.

I have been going to Hilton Head for many years. This rental has the distinction of being the worst place I ever rented. Broken and missing boards on the boardwalk up to the unit. Light fixtures that dont work (not just a matter of replacing bulbs). Patio furniture worn and in disrepair. Needed fumigation. (Folks- Even Hilton head has bugs, but most places do a better job fumigating). Phone didnt work. TV remote didnt work. Blender top missing, Bedroom light fixtures hanging form wires. Although I didnt expect state of the art appliances and furnishings, this place really needs some work ( updating and some modernizing). The biggest issue however was the lack of blinds on the windows to prevent the place from overheating. If your not familiar with the sealofts they are floor to ceiling windows. If no shades or curtains are provided this place heats up like a greenhouse. Everyday we had temperatures in the mid to high 80's. INSIDE THE HOUSE. There were times it was hotter in the house than outside!!! While the views are nice, we could not enjoy them because we had to tack up a sheet over the window to prevent the afternoon and evening sun from turning the unit into an oven. So much for the views. It really was so unbearable we could not even function, let alone enjoy the rental space. No family fun time in this place. The management company was responsive to some of our complaints. They did the best they could to repair, but since the purchase of things like fixtures and shades and furnishings falls on the owner, they really couldnt address the real issue of heat control and broken and missing items. PS the air condition was functioning but it just couldnt keep up with the heat. My understanding is that the owner has been aware of these issues for some time. With the money she charges, I cant understand why she cant put basic blinds on the windows and up grade the place. I tried contacting the owner to address the isssues I encountered, I have not heard back from her and suspect I never will. Hey, once you got the money...right? Please think twice about renting this place. There are nicer units available. The view is great...But I caution you not to rent out during the summer months until you have assurances that the windows have blinds or curtains on ALL the windows. The sub standard condition of this unit caused what I thought could never happen in Hilton Head.....a lousy family vacation.

Owner's Response: We do our best to stay on top of problems as they occur. New blinds were on order and installed in early August. Air conditioning repair company is available on short notice to check out problems. Our octagonal home has a lot of floor to ceiling glass and a western exposure on one side. The heat this past summer was record breaking through out the low country. Small items such as missing blender tops and non functioning remotes or lighting fixtures are items handled by our management company on a routine basis. Deck furniture exposed to the elements and year round rentals does take some heavy use and is replaced every few years or as needed. We regret the discomfort or inconvenience experienced. Our management company is always willing to move a guest if issues arise in a unit but we do not practice offering a refund, as requested here, after a guest checks out. We have many repeat vacationers and guests who book our unit a year in advance.

Almost Perfect

We loved the location of this unit. Unfortunately, we were uncomfortably hot the entire week. The floor to ceiling windows in the living room face west and three of them had no blinds or shades. The sun poured in all afternoon causing the indoor temperature to soar to 90. I found a broken shade and an outdoor fabric umbrella and some push pins in the laundry room and rigged them up over the windows to try to keep it cooler. Even with this, the inside temperature during the day never fell below 83. We noticed that the units around us all had blinds. Wish we had booked one of those instead.

Beautiful place, great location!

This was our second time at this wonderful home and we'll definitely come back. I take great exception to the previous review...the home was clean, maintained and properly cared for. We were there for two weeks and enjoyed it immensely. My wife is a clean freak and she loves the place.

The walkway to the home was solid, not a single loose board. I know, because not only did my wife and two poodles walk it multiple times daily, but we also had bicycles that we used on the walkway.

The supposed wall that's s french door, that section is designed to be opened. The decorative cord on the stair railing was very welcome and a wonderful safety item for our two dogs. It fit the nautical/beach theme of the home very well.

Every blind worked perfectly. We opened them upon arrival and left them open the entire time. With all the fans running (and they worked and were not dusty) the home remained cool while we enjoyed the beautiful sunlight and fantastic sunsets.

The living room area was fantastic. The clean sofa and comfortable leather chair made morning coffee that much more enjoyable. The kitchen was very well stocked. There was even a Brita water filter and hot water heater that made breakfast preparation a breeze. The bathroom is newly remodeled and it has a fantastic shower head.

In my opinion, this is one of the best homes on Deer Island Rd. Because of how it's situated, the views you get are without peer. You barely see any neighbors, and the time of year that we were there, no one was staying in the nearby homes so we had even more privacy.

This was our first full two week vacation in over 20 years. I am so happy that my wife and I and our two poodles spent it at this wonderful home. Our dogs, Spur and Arthur already want to go back. We definitely will!

20th anniversary getaway

My hubby and I really looked so forward to staying here. However when we got here it was a little scary coming in, there was some wooden boards on the walk way that are very weak and could give way anytime some have already. Upon coming in the door we realize the whole wall moves when you close or open door. Coming up the stairs the white carpet is nasty and has wholes in it. The extension cord used for child or dog safety barrier is both tacky and awful, and not in the pictures. Trying to turn on fans was a job because I had to clean the half inch of dust off them before I did. Half the lights in the unit do not work. Neither bedroom door will latch shut. Windows were very dirty, the French door blinds do not work open or close. The walmart bags wrapped in packaging tape then taped to the doors over the French doors as insulation is tacky. Crabs comes into bottom of unit at their leisure because of the large gap around the door. Dust in the air vents is awful. White carpet is very Dirty and just nasty. Maybe the $900.00+ I paid for the week isn't a lot for some people, but it is for us. To come in and this be what we were welcomed with on First visit to the Island left us not to impressed. However this part of the island is great, very peaceful and relaxing .. The unit has great potential but needs a lot (ALOT) of TLC. We loved the view, that is what sells this place and the only reason it was not a poor review. I would not recommend this unit, but I would recommend this area of the island.

Owner's Response: We do our best to stay on top of all maintenance and cleaning. I wish that you had notified us upon check in or during your stay of the problems. Our on site maintenance company would have provided cleaning and maintenance immediately or offered you another villa.
