In the Forest of Dean there are many cycle paths, most are suitable for familes, some are specifically for more experienced mountain bikers who love to feel the adrenolin rush! You are welcome to bring your own bike with you, we have a lockable bike shed on site, we do recommend bringing your own bike lock too. Bicycle hire is also available from several centres in the Forest of Dean.
Dogs and their owners love the many footpaths criss-crossing the Forest of Dean. Dogs are welcome in Badgers, Ivy, Coachmans and Magpie Cottages. A 'Doggy Box' is provided for use during your stay, containing dog towel, poop scoop & bags etc.
Yorkley is central to the main Forestry Commission sites for walking and cycling, so was conveniently located for our holiday. The Coachman's Cottage was just the right size for two adults and two young children. The highchair and cot provided were of good quality. The cottage was clean and well-maintained. The kids loved the play area around the back, and the free communal laundry facilities were good. The cottage is located in the quiet of the countryside but is only a short drive from Lydney for groceries (and there is a convenience store with post office in the village). There is also a nice playground and butcher along the road into Lydney. The only downside was that the internet was very slow, although that may be due to the rural location, rather than the property itself. We would stay again and would recommend the property.
Coachmans Cottage looks tiny from the outside but has a 'tardis' effect and wasn't even overcrowded when friends dropped by and we were eight for supper! It provides all you could want from a holiday home. . . with the sole exception of a clock . . . . and is spotlessly clean and well presented. The area is stunning, especially if you love wildlife. We felt so privileged to see red squirrels and a barn owl during our stay! Hostess Elaine Edwards was warm and welcoming and I was very pleased to find that I had good mobile phone reception and wi-fi to keep me in touch with the mundane world.
If you can drag yourself away from the forest, *do* visit Aunt Martha's Victorian Tearoom & Gardens - it's like a step back in time and SO well worth a visit! The food is delicious and the ambiance just so authentic that my great grandmother would not have felt in the least out of place.
I'm already recommending Deanwood Holiday Cottages to friends and my only complaint was that we only had a long weekend there. Next time, we MUST stay longer!
Our cottages are located in a quiet courtyard setting in the ancient Royal Forest of Dean, three miles from the riverside town of Lydney, Gloucestershire. Away from traffic and noise, reached along our own private driveway, our cottages are perfectly positioned for exploring the abundant wildlife and fauna of the Forest.
Walkers and cyclists of all ages enjoy the miles of footpaths and cyclepaths which criss-cross the Forest of Dean. The Forest of Dean is a dog's paradise and dogs are welcome in several of our cottages. We also have some cottages which we keep pet-free.
The Forest of Dean is famous amongst keen cyclists for its excellent mountain bike and downhill trails which are being extended all the time. The family cycle path follows an old railway line, ideal for a leisurely ride for the whole family.
Children love Puzzlewood, Go Ape, Clearwell Caves and a ride on the Dean Forest Steam Railway or at Perrygrove Miniature Railway with its treehouses and secret passageways. The Forest of Dean is bordered by two rivers - The Severn - try surfing the world famous Severn Bore, and The Wye where canoeing, kayaking and boat rides are readily available.
The magnificent Tintern Abbey beside the River Wye, the Castle at Chepstow and the Cathedral at Gloucester are popular historic sites.
