About the property

Beautiful, private, two bedroom cottage overlooking Walker Pond in Brooksville. Custom kitchen, living room with fireplace, bath with jetted tub and deck. Family room DVD and VCR viewing systems (viewed on TV, But no TV reception), and Foosball table. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. Not recommended for small children or persons who have difficulty with stairs. Canoe and kayak are available to borrow (life jackets also). Use of the beach is permitted by owners of the beach as long as we all keep it uncluttered and in its natural condition.

Walker Pond: Walker Pond is touted to be the third cleanest body of water in Maine. There are several species of fish including bass and trout. The water is up to four feet deep for approximately 100 ft. out. It reaches depths of 40 feet. The kayak that is available is made of heavy plastic. It is unsinkable and does not flip. It is perfect for the novice. The 16' canoe is perfect for two, three, or even four (two adults and two small children). Life jackets are provided or you may bring your own.

There is nothing more relaxing than listening to the loons in the evening, or watching a bald eagle soar over the lake.

Things to Do: Many of our guests enjoy just staying at the 'pond.' However, for those who like to venture out, there are many areas to hike, bike or drive. The public beach after the causeway from Little Deer Isle to Deer Isle is only a five minute drive. Deer Isle is a wonderful island full of the 'real' Maine. There are many artists and artisans with galleries out of their own homes, grocery stores, quaint shops, and Stonington, at the far end of the island is a working fishing village. The views are spectacular as you drive or bike ride and it is far less crowded than the Bar Harbor region.

Bar Harbor is about an hour drive away.

About Sharon Thoner

I was born in Idaho, raised in Maryland went to college in Utah, and my husband and I moved to Maine in 1981. I am currently a full-time teacher, a mother of 3 grown sons, and a grandmother to 6 children. We currently live on Little Deer Isle, about 5 minutes from the rental house.

Why Sharon Thoner chose Brooksville

My husband built this house around 2000. We had lived near fresh water in other parts of the state, and though we are now on the ocean, we wanted a place to go swimming and fishing in fresh water. My husband is an artist at heart, and he designed and built the house with attention to every detail. He and his crew cleared the land, put in the driveway, and built the house. He personally did most of the stonework around the fireplace. The granite countertops, custom built cabinets, etc., are a source of great pride to him. Everyone that enters is pleased at the aesthetic nature of the building.

There is NO TV reception. The set is for use with DVD or VCR only. This home is suitable for most people, except small children (under 5) or people who have difficulty with stairs. The entrance is through the daylight basement which is tile over concrete, and the staircase is open. I have had at least 100 people over the last 4 years with no difficulties, but if you have any concerns, this is not the rental for you. As a general rule, I prefer you leave your pets home; however, there have been instances where a larger deposit has been paid in order to have dogs in the house, so if you or a family member has a severe allergic reaction to dogs this is not the rental for you.

A truly spectacular vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

My family spent 5 nights at this Walker Pond home and are so grateful for the experience. Sharon was a terrific host – she answered questions we had before we arrived and gave us a good sense of the house so that we knew what to expect. The location of the house was perfect for us- we spent two days just playing on the pond and 2 days up in Acadia taking in the sites. Walker Pond is absolutely gorgeous – clean, warm, and perfect for a swim or a paddle around the lake. The house is as comfortable as it is beautiful. The kitchen is well equipped and we were able to enjoy nice meals overlooking the lake. Foosball was a popular past time but we also just enjoyed reading and spending time as a family. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect vacation.

Owner's Response: One of my primary goals is to facilitate families as they enjoy all aspects of Coastal Maine. I am blessed to have this property to offer, which is equidistant from Rockland and Camden, Bar Harbor, and Castine. I love this area of Maine, and am pleased when others appreciate all of the variety this area has to offer!

Most Relaxing Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

We (my husband, and two sons - 7 years and 7 months) stayed at this camp in July for two weeks during a five week road trip. And we all agree that the two weeks on Walker Pond were the most relaxing and wonderful part of the vacation. The house is on the pond and hidden enough in the woods that you cannot see other cabins from the living area or the deck. We spent most of our days fishing, canoeing and kayaking around the pond. There is a kids' camp on the Pond. Motor boats were pulling campers learning to ski on the weekdays, as well as kids learning to sail and swim. It was more activity than we anticipated, but was fun to see them. We also enjoyed exploring the nearby towns of Blue Hill, Stonington and Deer Isle, which were no more than 15-20 minutes drive. We even made it to a local production of Annie at the Blue Hill town hall! Acadia park is an easy hour's drive and Camden is a little over an hour.

The house itself has everything you need for a quiet vacation. The kitchen had all the amenities for us to cook in most nights. The loft upstairs was perfect for our older son to spread out legos and play. And the downstairs fuseball table was used nightly. The house does not have internet, cable and our cell phones did not have service. We considered this one of the best parts of the house. Because of this we played board games, read Harry Potter and were reminded that we can have great fun without technology.

Lastly, I cannot say enough good things about Sharon. From the time that we booked the house, she was prompt with responses to my questions. We were a bit concerned about our baby and the stairs (which turned out to not be an issue), but she offered several solutions. When we arrived she made sure we had everything we needed. And halfway through our stay she picked up sheets and towels, laundered them and returned them.

If you are looking to truly have some time alone or with family/friends without any distractions, this is the perfect house for you to rent. If we find ourselves back in Maine, we will definitely be contacting Sharon again.

Owner's Response: J and her family were a delight! While I appreciate her kind remarks, and admit, I do try to be a good hostess, I must say wonderful tenants make it so easy! I'm pleased that the family remembers this part of their vacation with fondness. I personally love this part of Maine. I love each of the local towns as well as the proximity to other areas of interest. I love sharing with others so they can see that there is a part of this world that can be peaceful and just wonderful! Thank you, J for your review. BTW - I just discovered a lego piece in the loft hidden in a corner. I'd be glad to send it to you, if he still has that set. Sharon
