Clifford House is situated on Clifford's Cove, a beautiful setting 1/4 mile from open ocean. The property is a five bedroom Victorian-period sea captain's house on 3 1/2 acres on Rutherford Island, South Bristol, Maine. The Island is connected to the mainland by a small bridge in the picturesque fishing village of South Bristol.
The main house has 3 bedrooms and one bath. The in-law apartment has 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. A short hallway connects them. They each have living rooms and kitchens. The main house has a screened porch.
One bedroom and bath are on the ground floor with no stairs.
The main house and in-law are always rented together.
The house is surrounded by gardens, yards, fields of wild flowers, and woods. It is on a small country road that sees more walkers, joggers, and bicyclers than cars. A long stand of tall trees along the road provide privacy for the house and grounds. From the grounds you see no other buildings except for the caretaker’s cottage.
Clifford’s Cove is home to a small friendly summer colony of which Clifford House is by far the largest property available to rent. The property extends from a scenic country road to the water. The house is close enough to the water so that you can watch the fishing boats but far enough that they don’t wake you when they start working in the morning.
Clifford House is perfectly situated for a family vacation. It is private but not isolated. It is great for weddings and family reunions or for two families vacationing together.
High-speed internet is included.
We don’t charge a cleaning fee.
Boating: Boat and kayak rentals are available nearby. Mooring rental in our cove can be arranged.
Our availability calendar is always up-to-date, and we always respond to inquiries promptly. This site may tell you differently because it isn’t savvy about seasonal rentals.

Another magical week on Rutherford Island. Beautiful scenery, long walks, kayaking, relaxing on the porch, fishing, watching the sunset from the dock and a full moon rise from the yard, a boat ride to see the puffins, delicious meals, good company. A perfect vacation.
I’ve stayed at Clifford House a number of summers in a row, with different mixes of my brothers, cousins, and their spouses. The thing I like about this place is, it has two “units” (connected by a hall), each one has its own living room and kitchen, so everyone can “do their own thing” on their own schedule. Not to mention a big screened-in porch with great views. The lawns are so big, you can have croquet, volleyball, and Frisbee-throwing all at once, with room to spare. And there’s an interesting set of books in one of the hallways. And then, of course, it’s got a dock. What’s not to like?
I was lucky enough to spend a week at Clifford House this past August and enjoyed every second! The house itself is beautiful, well kept, and has plenty of space for any activity we desired, whether it was cocktails on the porch, cooking dinner in one or both kitchens, or just relaxing with coffee in the sunny breakfast nook. We were lucky enough to have spectacular weather throughout our stay and spent plenty of time enjoying the view out on the dock. South Bristol itself was lovely to bike or run around (although watch out, there are plenty of hills to keep you guessing!), and is the perfect amount of relaxed/off the tourist path without feeling like being in the middle of nowhere. There was also plenty to do in the surrounding area - the Boothbay Botanical Gardens were a beautiful attraction, and Pemequid Point may be my new favorite place on earth with it's spectacular rock formations and crashing waves! We also enjoyed checking out local breweries in Boothbay and on Monhegan Island and eating our way through plenty of seafood. I would absolutely recommend staying here to anyone looking for a getaway - this house is truly a gem - would love to return for another stay in the future!
We feel that the Clifford House is our Maine home! We have been going there for the last 5 years and look forward to it each year. Each year we find another thing to love, kickball on the large lawn, a talent show in the living room, kayak races to the Gut, fishing off the dock and of course enjoying lobster and family while watching a beautiful sunset. We have kids of all ages from 6 to 76 and everyone loves their time. If you want to spend an amazing week with your family in a beautiful corner of the world, then I highly recommend the Clifford House. We are counting the days until we get back!
We have spent a week at the Clifford House each summer for the last four years. The house is clean, charming and so Maine. The beautiful yard is expansive and perfect for young and old to play games or enjoy the magnificent view. The dock is great for fishing and water sports. The children love to walk to the local stores and restaurant. Pemaquid, a beautiful beach and swimming location is only 15 minutes away. We have no qualms about highly recommending the experience of a stay at the Clifford House.

My husband and I, who live in Maine, have spent our summer vacation week (or sometimes 2 weeks) at the Clifford House in South Bristol, Maine, every summer for the past TEN years. This fact alone will tell you how much we like it there. The house, large lawn, dock and small beach area are perfect for us and our three kids. We sometimes have other family or friends visit and stay overnight and there is plenty for room for that. The owners are wonderful people who are always helpful and informative. The area is beautiful and the whole experience is extremely relaxing, which is why we choose to spend our time there year after year.
We have stayed at the Clifford House several times over the past 10 years and have enjoyed every visit to the utmost. It is a magical place ....plenty of room for two families or a multigenerational gathering. Terrific location for exploring the Pemaquid area or just relaxing on the property with the beautiful water view as a backdrop. Great kayaking and fishing right from the dock. The Turners are accommodating and gracious hosts. A real find.
Clifford's Cove is 1/4 mile from open ocean. Clifford House has a spacious yard with plenty of room for volleyball and croquet. Use of the dock and float are included. Boat moorings are available at Christmas Cove, which is within walking distance. Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid State Park and Beach, boat rentals, boat rides, moorings, and golf course are nearby.
Golf: Public golf course is 10 miles away.
Don't let Homeaway tell you that our calendar isn't up-to-date. They just don't understand seasonal rentals. We always maintain our calendar.
