Exactly as depicted
Beautiful property and great location for day trips in Tuscany. Francesca was lovely and had it not been for the constant rain, we would have had an opportunity to enjoy the property even more than we did. So many things to do nearby if you aren't into day trips. We also were in very close proximity to all public transportation options, which we availed ourselves of as well. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone.
thank you very much you are welcome!
Small but wonderful
We did not know what to expect when we arrived but this is a gem. Francesca, the owner is lovely and gave us a long list of places to visit and where to eat, she really went out of her way to accommodate us. The house is small but cosy and definitely worth every cent. With a view over Empoli we spent our evenings watching the sun go down in a really pretty part of Tuscany. We definitely will be going back.
Exquisite Tuscan hideaway
This place is unique- a self-contained antique house retrofitted with contemporary amenities, attached to the owners’ home but completely private. All stone, stylishly designed with a separate upper level for the large loft-like bedroom and bath, attached to an outdoor shower on the patio connected by a locking door- gorgeous. It is perfect for a weekend or week away in silence just the sound of the rooster before sunrise, music if you turn on the sound system, and beautiful grounds. The onlly caveat is the rocky 1/2 kilometer road to the house from the main street in Castra- you must meet Francesca in town to find the place! Once there, no problem. Highly recommended.
Leslie and John thank you so much you are welcome anytime at "The Barn". I hope you can come back to visit us. the next time you will find the adjusted access road. I'm sorry for this!
A Tuscan Dream.
We made our way up the hills from Florence to Castra, often wondering if we were going the right way. But Francesca’s directions were clear, so when we turned onto a white gravel road leading us through the olive trees we were sure we had found the villa. A few minutes later, we were ecstatic as we pulled into the driveway. It was beautiful. David and Francesca were there with a bottle of olive oil from their grove, and welcoming smiles. We still remember the wonderful smells of the house and the gardens, and the amazing view of the Tuscan valley below and on to the sea. Every day was like a dream. The villa was lovingly decorated with all the comforts of home. We slept very well, and woke up late almost every day to enjoy coffee on the patio. Among the many experiences we had in Italy, meeting David and Francesca and staying in their wonderful house is at the top of the list. From Castra we were just a short drive from Pisa, Florence, Vinci, and many other small towns in Tuscany. Thanks to David and Francesca, we are now big fans of all things Tuscan, including brick oven pizza, Chianti, and fresh parmesan wrapped in prosciutto de Parma. We miss you both and hope to see you again soon.
For me and David was very nice to share with you our experience in the Tuscan countryside.
For you, our home in Tuscany will always be available to you and I hope you can come back to find us.
Thank you for being here was really nice meeting you.
Francesca and David
After 4 days in Rome, we longed for peace and quiet, for a place in the countryside where we could relax. As we drove on the narrow, rutted road leading to our rental in Castra, we were concerned. Where in the world would we end up? But when we rounded the bend and drove into the driveway of Francesca and David's property, we knew. We had arrived in Tuscan heaven. The beautiful photos on the web site show you exactly what you will find. A meticulously renovated barn which includes both the best of the old and the best of the new. Rustic, spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, filled with books, music, art (David's paintings). Outside, patio furniture, gardens filled with rosemary, herbs, olive trees, flowers. And then there are the views, laid out before us, Tuscany. We traveled to the west coast and Cinque Terre, Lucca, Vinci (only 10 minutes), Florence. We enjoyed each trip but always looked forward to returning to our Tuscan "home." Ahhhh. Our most treasured memory --the traditional Tuscan lunch, simple, fresh, delicious, prepared by our hosts and their parents, shared on their patio, overlooking Tuscany. We ate, and talked, and laughed with these warm, generous new friends who adore their Tuscany. We hope to return.
Me and David had the pleasure to know two very special people and we shared a friendship with really nice day together .
we hope to see you again and to have another opportunities to enjoy together in our Tuscan countryside!
with best regards
Francesca and David
Feels like home!
The four days we stayed at the Il Fienile was our favorite memory of our 4-week-honeymoon. The house was exactly like the pictures - beautiful, private, spacious, very clean, and full of characters. Bedroom and bathroom are on the 2nd floor. The bed is really comfortable, we slept like babies every night and woke up to the sound of birds singing. Every evening we sat in the kitchen sipping on wine or tea - feels just like home. David and Francesca were friendly, kind, helpful, and fun to hang out with. They lived right next door and were available whenever we needed them, and let us have our privacy at other times.
A great base to visit Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Florence, etc. if you plan to drive. We rented a convertable - next time we'd go with a different car since Il Fienile is off a small, kinda bumpy "white road". Also we observed that Italians drive quite fast so if they tell you "15 minutes" prepare to drive for 30 if you follow the speed limit.
There's a winery nearby called Fattoria Castellina - we bought some wine there that were fantastic!
The nearest supermarket is more than 10 minutes away so if you don't want to drive out after checking in, bring your groceries. David and Francesca provides the basics like salt and pepper and basils (fresh!) and olive oil they pressed themselves!
Would definitely recommend it and wish to come back again some day!
For me and David was a pleasure to have in our home two special people like you.
Thank you enjoyed your holiday in Tuscany.
We hope to see you again
