I stayed at Old Millers Cottage for a week. It was the perfect location for some long walks, right from the doorstep. The cottage is cosy and is very well maintained.
I would not hesitate to revisit in the future.
The cottage is smartly furnished and decorated and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect and it's wonderful to have such a beautiful spot to yourselves in the early morning and late afternoon. However the pre-set heating was not adequate for us and we were very cold.
Thank you for your review. I'm sorry you did not find the property warm enough. The heating is set to to come on from 6.00 AM until 11.00PM, The living room and kitchen are set to 21 degrees C and the bedroom and bathroom 19 degrees C which are the recommended temperatures for these areas. The temperature never drops below 16 degrees C during the middle of the day. Other guests have not commented that the property is cold, but I will monitor the settings.
Cosy cottage in fantastic location. Our 2nd visit and will definitely stay again.
A little gem!
Perfect long weekend hideaway. Beautiful cosy little cottage with stunning views. Superb bathroom and well equipped kitchen. A pleasure to come back to at the end of a long day’s walking. Great location, we parked the car when we arrived and didn’t need to use it until we left! Contrary to what we had read before there is also excellent WiFi.
Lovely to hear the river running and the owls hooting at night and the ducks squabbling in the mornings.
Communication with Ant the owner was very easy.
Will definitely be back!
Very well appointed cottage in the ideal Milldale location to walk and enjoy the scenery
Great location, right next to the Milldale bridge. My wife and I, along with our dog, walked upstream into the hills and downstream to Dovedale. The Old Millers Cottage has been renovated and is well equipped to a very high standard. We enjoyed home cooking as well as local pubs.
We were fortunate that the weather was dry, although cold, so that we could make the most of the scenery. Definitely need a car as quite a walk to the nearest pub. We split each day into a walking section and then a visit to a nearby town - Bakewell for the famous pudding, Ashbourne for some shopping and a cream tea, and also spent a couple of hours at Ilam Park in lovely countryside.
Perfect for a short getaway from it all..
A long weekend at Old Millers Cottage in Milldale was a welcome break. With long walks on the doorstep and the Watts Russell Arms a mile up the road serving a nice variety of meals and local beers, it was ideally positioned for the two of us and our small dogs. The cottage is well presented, compact et bijou, warm and cosy. The George in Alstonfield also provided a lovely atmosphere for dinner and is also only a few minutes drive away. Owner was very helpful with all arrangements.
Thoroughly recommend for a break with a difference..
Here in the White Peak area of the Peak National Park, characterised by its rolling plateau split by steep sided dales, lies the beautiful hamlet of Milldale. The hamlet nestles at the end of Dovedale and enjoys numerous walks starting and finishing there, with parking and a small refreshment shop for visitors. The cottage is the perfect starting point for visiting the surrounding Dales, explore the crags, caves, spires and deep limestone ravines of this iconic landscape. The area has been popular with anglers since the 17th Century after Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton published 'The Compleat Angler'. It is from this book that the bridge at Milldale, crossing the River Dove, gets its name .
Short journeys by car is all that is required to take you to many local attractions and towns. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, is close by with its award winning farm shop. Visit Bakewell and try a pudding, Buxton for opera and it's Georgian Crescent architecture. Carsington Water offers plenty of activities from a walk around the lake, to power boat courses! Ashbourne and Buxton Spa are both within a 25min drive and include major stores and supermarkets. The area is a haven for walkers, sightseers and day trippers all searching for enjoyment and relaxation, Old Millers Cottage is the perfect setting for you to be based. An excellent choice of restaurants is available or pubs in beautiful rural locations also specialising in good quality food.
There is internet / wifi at the cottage. Due to the steep valley sides there is no mobile phone reception, you have to travel to higher ground to get a signal.
