About Penny Ravenscroft

We bought this old farmhouse as a ruin and the whole family, children and grandchildren, have spent over 20 years doing it up and loving it. Floors creek and bats might fly in, just as they do in our old farmhouse in Hampshire where we have lived for nearly 50 years. I spend at least 3 months of the year enjoying Lissac and gardening, mending, painting to make it even more enjoyable for us and visitors.

Penny Ravenscroft purchased this farmhouse in 1989

Why Penny Ravenscroft chose Ariege

It is a comfortable, spacious country idyll, not a modern villa. You hear the cows and sheep and sometimes the distant drone of a tractor, and watch the buzzards, hoopooes, woodpeckers and llamas across the fields. Life moves at a very leisurely pace and a hare or deer may come wandering by. The nearest house is at least 200 metres away, the views are of rolling hills, yet there are plenty of lovely places to visit and things to do. Most people fall in love with it and the area, as we did.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Space, peace and quiet, natural wild life. No neighbours to worry about. A huge swimming pool and a park-like garden and a wood to get lost in and have adventures - a freedom that too few children can ever experience. Large, covered outdoor area for leisurely meals and shade.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is our second visit and we will return again. We love the house and as a small choir, we enjoy singing around the grand piano

Shooting stars, pool frolics and total relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

We were three families with children ageing from 7 to 11 and had the most fabulous time in Lissac. Staying up late to watch the shooting stars, having epic water pistol fights in the pool, enjoying long and very relaxing meals outside all contributed to a fabulous time. Jean-Claude, the caretaker, was wonderful and a real help with the many activities in the local area. There is so much to do that we could have done three different things every day but sometimes the call of the pool was just too strong...! The children adored exploring the forest, looking at nature (they found gheckos, owls and hedgehogs) and one night an owl flew out right in front of us. We all agreed that it was a perfect holiday!

A wonderful homely vacation

  • 4 of 5

We booked Le Fossat as the second week to our summer vacation in Spain & France, for our family of 4 which included two teenage children.

The first week was spent in the north of Spain in a lovely villa, quite modern and very 'normal' when it comes to Villa rentals ie...quite prescribed in terms of inventory and 'rules' etc. We had a great time and would happily return.

Le Fossat was very different, in a good way!

When we received the holiday 'pack' the first few lines described it as more of a family home to have holidays in than a holiday home. And, as we discovered, there is a difference.

The Gites is perfectly situated, a 10 minute drive from superb restaurants and supermarkets and 15 minutes from lovely Bastide villages and 30 minutes from larger towns such as Foix. The countryside is stunning so much so that even our kids were impressed.

The house itself was superb because it was a real home, with all the feeling of a place that was well loved and contained good and bad taste in terms of artwork, ornaments, books and furniture. It was just like our house! (as the holiday pack advised!)

There were no rules as such and we felt under no pressure to behave in a certain way, or to follow certain procedures....it was totally relaxing.

There were only 4 of us and we had space 'a' plenty, I can imagine that two families here would be idyllic with the size of the grounds and swimming pool, and the interior was 'shabby chic' and large.

If you are slightly OCD, then Le Fossat may not be your cup of tea but our Spanish villa would be a good choice, but if you want a truly relaxing carefree holiday in a real home then this place is great.

Perfect holiday with a geoup of friends

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely house with gorgeous large grounds and a big pool. The open barn veranda is a wonderful spot to laze away your days admiring the beautiful views over open countryside. It is also a great place for large groups to eat together in all weather. We were a group of 16 friends and enjoyed the pool, the open fires and made a lot of use of the piano! It is ideal if you want to really get away from it all. Best if you have a couple of keen cooks as it is a great spot to eat together, and restaurants are a bit of a drive. That suited us perfectly.

A French home from home

  • 5 of 5

On behalf of the 13 of us, thank you so much for such a wonderful holiday at Lissac. We all had such a great time - what a beautiful house, exactly what we were after and what beautiful scenery and setting. We couldn't have asked for anywhere that was more perfect for our needs: great house, great pool, great garden and great outdoor area which we spent many hours in. The house had everything we needed, and we wouldn't think twice about coming back.

A wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved the Lissac. Our group of 12 people (plus a few more for the last 3 nights) had plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the gorgeous garden, spacious pool, and the piece de resistance - the 'abri' or outdoor dining area. So even when it rained on a couple of occasions, we could still eat outside. The house oozed warmth and charm, and the view from the abri was beautiful. We saw buzzards, kites, herons and hares. Our group's ages ranged from 18 months to 66, and everyone had a fantastic time. Our family rarely get to be together all under one roof for any length of time, so this was a special time for us and hopefully we will return to Lissac one day. The booking process was also straightforward and lots of helpful information provided. Can't recommend enough.

Beautiful, relaxed place for a group

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday with friends and family at Lissac. We enjoyed the relexed and peaceful atmosphere in a charming rural setting with birds and wildlife and wonderful views from the beutiful terrace. The houss, pool and outside area are excellent - and there is enough space for peace and quiet even with a large group. We really enjoyed the piano too. Finally there are lots of places of interest in beutioful countryside in the vicinity for all tastes: food, history, adventure and nature.

The photos and description were accurate. The property was in good working order and reasonably clean. There was on site support for cleaning the pool and repairs or help needed.

We would definitely recommedn this place to friends an dfamily and in fact are already planning our return trip!

The house is not available in the winter - mid-October to end of March because there is no central heating and the downstairs rooms are large and even with open fires and back-up gas heaters the electricity is not reliable enough to let the house then. We shiver in England too!

Lots of space outside for games and local farmers perfectly happy with walkers - dreamy views of the Pyrenees from the little hills all around and the swimming pool surrounded by roses, lavender and honeysuckle as well as views up the valley. Neighbours are at least 500 m away but excellent public services, doctors, shops etc within 8 kms.
