Perfect Maine Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our first trip to Maine. Leslie said we were in for a treat and she was right! Beautiful morning coffee view watching the lobsterman check their traps and beautiful sunset view while eating fresh seafood on the back deck. Perfect set up for my wife and I and our 16 yr old son. He had the downstairs pullout sofa and we had the upstairs in a REALLY comfortable bed with a nice flow of ocean breeze each night to make for perfect sleeping conditions. And we had our own rental dog for the week - love Pilot!

Plenty of things to do to fill a week. We were pretty active, but always returned to the cottage for dinner preferring the peace and serenity of nature over the tourists of Camden. If you are looking for an active itinerary, here was ours (comments like this from others were very helpful to our vacation planning efforts):

Saturday - arrive early evening and dinner at McCloons - a place you will visit more than once!

Sunday - Camden State Park hiking 7 miles, lunch on the deck at Camden Deli (very good), then a stop by a lobster wholesaler for a few bugs to be steamed at the cottage.

Monday - Ferry Ride to Monhegan Island, another 7 miles of hiking and great views, and a stop at Millers Lobster company to pick up more big red bugs for dinner.

Tuesday - Leisurely drive to Boothbay to grab some fresh oysters at Scullys - the price list is on the cooler - take what you want and leave the money in the box (honor system) - grab an oyster knife, some cocktail sauce, and seat yourself at one of the picnic tables in her yard and enjoy. Had lunch a little later and then stopped by Beth's Market in Warren on the way home - a real treat! Leslie and Gordon hooked us up this day with 20 lobsters put in a trap off their dock for our weekly consumption. We cooked 8 that night. (L&G are the best!)

Wednesday - Daytrip to Acadia State Park. Another 6 miles of hiking/views. 2 hrs each way and really crowded this time of year. Plan to arrive by 10:00 a.m. if you want a parking spot. The park has a really good free bus system to take you from stop to stop (47,000 acres).

Thursday - Rain. So a good day for the 1.5 hr drive to Freeport to visit the LL Bean village. By the time we returned, the rain had yielded to a beautiful, cool evening. We ate the last 12 lobsters and gathered around the fire pit.

Friday - lunch at Long Grain in Camden (excellent) and a visit to Breakwater lighthouse, then ice cream at Dorman's.

BOOK IT!!! The best!

Owner's Response: We hope you come back for another visit real soon. What a full week of activities you had! We have many of other suggestions for your next visit and we will have your crate of lobsters waiting for you. Maybe we can talk Gordon into making you a blueberry pie! Pilot is eagerly waiting for your next visit.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful, relaxing corner of the world! House was well equipped and clean, everything you could want including a washer and dryer! View could not be beat and it was so nice to sit on the deck for coffee in the morning or drinks in the afternoon. Secluded but very close to McCloon's Lobster...can walk there...and only 10 min from Rockland. We enjoyed the Blues Featival, Farnsworth, and all the shops and restaurants nearby. Easy to get to so many attractions for the day and return to your serene little piece of paradise! Leslie is a wonderful host and was always available if we had any questions...and we enjoyed her friendly dog, Pilot, and her cat! We hope to return ASAP!

Everything you need with a quiet ocean front view!

  • 5 of 5

The owners have ensured you have everything you need for you stay. Comfy beds and linens, laundry facilities, coffeemaker, dishes, chairs...you name it, they have it ready for you. The rocks along the shoreline are a great spot for watching lobster skiffs, birding, and reading. We had our meals on the deck, and enjoyed walking around the island. If you want to explore the region, there are lots of lighthouses and interesting attractions fit for a day drive and if you forget anything, the stores aren't too far away either! Leslie and Gordon are available in the adjacent house and happy to help if you need them. And Pilot, their adorable little dog, will come around to check on you as well. Definitely recommended!

Our favorite place in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We love coming to Spruce Head. We have come for the last three years. It is in a beautiful location and the cottage has everything we need, including in the kitchen. I love to cook and Leslie has just about everything. It's also easy to get to lots of places for day trips including Owl's Head, Port Clyde, and Rockland. The hard decision is whether to relax and enjoy the view or go out exploring. We stay in a lot of different places, but this is the one we make sure we come back to.

Unbeatable Views

  • 5 of 5

We've been coming to mid-Coast Maine for many years but have always stayed with relatives. Recently they've moved, so we were stuck finding our own place for only the second time, and that place had to be dog-friendly. We really lucked out with Leslie's Spruce Head cottage. The pictures really don't do it justice and we spent part of every day looking at how all of the blues of the water and the sky complimented the grey of the rock and the green spruce. Our dog loved the big yard as well and enjoyed spending time with Leslie's pup Pilot.

The house is well stocked with linens and towels, blankets, cooking implements, and basics like salt and oil. The cottage is on the smaller side, but was fine for our needs as we were only two adults and one dog. The main point of the property, for us, was to spend as much time outdoors and we were lucky to have mostly perfect weather. If you are traveling with your pet(s) please note that they are not allowed on the second floor. This wasn't an issue for our dog, but would have been for our last pup who had to sleep wherever we did. Leslie is extremely responsive and very friendly, so it's nice to be able to recommend her property.

This was our first time staying with her and she was a thoughtful and generous host. It really is absolutely world class for views, I doubt that there are many places that have these views for any money, let alone the very reasonable price that it cost for us to spend a week at the cottage. Location wise, it's an extremely private and beautiful place and you really do feel like you're in your own world (check out the sand beach just up the rocks) but at the same time it's an easy drive to Rockland, Route 1, Camden, and other places north and south if you feel like going out to eat or forgot a bottle of wine. Would definitely stay again, what a piece of paradise.

Map

On an enclosed bay south of Camden on Coastal Route 1, Rockland is a central waypoint for travelers. Landing ports and ferries to and from Northhaven and Vinalhaven Islands are available. Rockland is surrounded by bays, peninsulas, rivers, lakes, and inlets. The Midcoast exhibits tremendous natural beauty. If you're looking for the authentic Maine experience, this is it. The Rockland-Thomaston area is the entry point to Penobscot Bay, perhaps the most scenic body of water on the eastern seaboard. Here you'll find islands, historic lighthouses, and protected harbors filled with working lobster boats. Ospreys and bald eagles nest along the rugged shores, puffins make the islands their home, and harbor seals make their annual pilgrimage to quiet coves. While nature is at the core, hospitality is the rule of the day. Here you'll find outstanding restaurants and galleries and first-class museums. This is the Lobster Capital of the World and home to the country's largest windjammer fleet.

Other Activities: Island exploration and beach combing
