About the property

Castle House

Located inside the castle walls and with views of Estremoz and the Alentejo plains, this charming and comfortable apartment occupies a traditional 16th century house renovated in 2012.

Less than five minutes walk away, you can find the 13th century castle with its marble tower, the municipal museum, art galleries, and some of the best restaurants in the region. A bit further downhill (500m) you reach the town centre where you can explore beautiful churches, the antiques and local produce market, traditional shops and experience the lifestyle and character of Alentejo.

Nearby, but better with a car, you can visit some top class wine cellars (wine tasting can be arranged), the town of Vila Viçosa with its royal palace, Reguengos de Monsaraz and the Alqueva dam (largest man made lake in Europe), the carpet weaving town of Arraiolos and the World Heritage sites of Évora and Elvas.

Regarding activities, besides gastronomy and wine tasting, you can choose to visit the marble quarries and local artists, swim in the municipal pools or nearby lakes: excellent spots for canoeing, fishing and rowing (some of Europe’s top rowing teams train here). Hiking, birdwatching, cycling and stargazing, due to the low pollution and beautiful nature, are also a popular activities.

Beautiful View

  • 4 of 5

The day we arrived there was a Fair within the Castle area so it was a bit difficult to get to the apartment (smooth sailing after that though). The apartment is exactly as depicted in the pictures. It was very nice (although the furniture could use a little sprucing up). It had a great view. It would have been nicer (for me), if the apartment had been aired out a little before we got there (the reason for only 4 stars - very sensitive nose). I know this is something that occurs when an apartment is not in use (but by the next day, after we opened the windows and doors, the damp smell went away). If you like to sleep in total darkness, this is the place for you. :) Also, beware of low door entrances (thankfully, I'm short, but my husband had a hard time - LOL). I love the chair in the alcove - sort of a meditation place. Very homey. Rodrigo was prompt to answer our calls and very courteous.

The restaurant up the street was very nice although a bit pricey. Food was good and the host was very cordial. The bar upstairs from the restaurant also has very nice views.

Overall, I would stay there again.

Thank you, Rodrigo.

Christmas stay in medieval castle apartment

  • 5 of 5

Rodrigo's apartment in the castle walls is an ideal place to stay in the summer or winter. The wood fire gives it a very cosy feel and the views from the wall terrace are beautiful.

Rodrigo is a hospitable host who went out of his way to arrange information about local walking routes and places of interest that were not available at the dissapointing tourist information in Estremoz.

Estremoz is an authentic sleepy town in Alentejo and an ideal get away for a relaxing break. It is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, cork oak's and olive plantations.

We would highly recommend both Rodrigo's apartment and Estremoz.

  • 5 of 5

Awesome place inside the ancient walls of the castle!!!!! Clean, comfortable, cosy, with a very nice little terrace. Fantastic view over Estremoz. Very central in the area, we are able to visit Alter do Chão, Portalegre, Évora, Avis, Monsaraz... The hostess, Neida, was always available and helpfull showing us around and giving us good ideas to enjoy and improve our stay. We will be back definitely!!!

Casa da Muralha

  • 5 of 5

Clean, comfortable appartment with a nice little terrace on the back with wide view over the town. Situated in historic town center uphill, very central in the area. Evora, Elvas, and Monsaraz were well worth their visit. Hostess Neida was very helpfull showing us around, and very kind to allow us to switch from her other appartment to this one to be able to benefit from the terrace..

Una estancia y wine tour espectaculares!!

  • 5 of 5

Muchas gracias Rodrigo

Espero volver algun dia.
