1 The Green is a delightful 4 bed-roomed holiday cottage in the village of Muston in the Vale of Belvoir (pronounced “Beever”).

The house is actually two farm cottages joined together to make a family house of four bedrooms with gas central heating. The house is newly restored in a sympathetic style using natural ecological paint, and is furnished with antique pieces to suit the house. There is an ample supply of glassware, china and linen. There is a large kitchen with electric stove, microwave oven, fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble drier; a large sitting- room with television and open fire and an elegant separate dining- room/study.

There are two double bedrooms with double beds and two single bedrooms. There is a bathroom, shower room and a downstairs cloakroom. Outside there is Outside there is a large front lawn, and at the rear a patio garden. A small conservatory serves as a store for bicycles, walking gear and garden furniture.

I am a part-time tutor of English for international students at a university. I have many friends abroad, and my son's family live in Colorado in the US. I live in Surrey in a small 18th century cottage. My interests are nature and the environment, history, house renovation, music, walking and gardening.

Why Lynn Lawton chose South Kesteven

My parents bought this house in 1970 when my father's work (international educational bookseller) required him to move to the Midlands. My son spent all his school holidays there when he was growing up. After my mother died in 2008 I decided to renovate the property and retain some of the furniture, books and other items that had been used when my parents lived there.

What makes this house unique

This house has a calm and happy atmosphere and gets the sun in the kitchen in the morning and in the sitting room in the afternoon. When the weather is not so kind it is cosy and comfortable and there is a log fire too. There is also a proper dining room- the house is traditional and elegant but also spacious and unfussily furnished. The countryside is good for walks and bike rides and there are plenty of places to visit. Nottingham is about 40 minutes drive away.

Sunday morning tour of Belvoir Castle was very educational and lunch at The Forge tearooms in Muston finished off a lovely weekend! Cottage had everything we needed, thank you!

Very comfortable and wonderfully quiet. The local walks are excellent- the canal was superb with a large flock of tree sparrows and healthy dragonfly populations...and Muston Meadows National Nature Reserve's a real treasure.......must be fantastic in early summer....a really big selling point of the cottage's location.....would recommend Belton House, Southwell (especially the workhouse) and Woolsthorpe Manor. We really enjoyed our meals in your lovely dining room and breakfasts in the bright and sunny kitchen. Excellent!

Comfortable and charming....however

I stayed here with my two sisters and a friend. It was plenty spacious enough for 4 women. It's set in a great location, nice grounds around it, tastefully decorated. But there were some issues. There are two safety concerns. One is the carport parking area has steep drop offs on each side. You have to be careful when you step out of the car on either side so that you don't turn your ankle or even break it. The second issue is that there is a random step in the middle of the upstairs hallway. I'm sure it's due to the fact that two cottages were put together. But the problem is that it's one solid carpet color/strip and there's no line delineating the step. Visually it's very dangerous. One of my sisters fell the first time she walked down the hall. We ended up putting a chair at that step location to make it more visually obvious. A red strip of tape or some other demarcation is needed. There was a strong mold odor coming out of the dining room. We ended up shutting that room off and not using it. We had lots of issues connecting to Wi-Fi. We contacted the owner but she didn't know the password. The password written in the guestbook was incorrect. We eventually connected with the neighbor who very begrudgingly helped us. She seemed very upset that she was getting stuck assisting the owner's guests. She mentioned that she had had to help the couple before us also figure out how to connect to Wi-Fi. All in all a nice place to stay but it needs some more attention.

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry you found the steps outside and upstairs a problem. I shall certainly warn future visitors. I'm afraid as a farm workers' cottage well over a hundred years old there are no foundations and this often means it may smell damp, but this is not unusual. I not able to visit very often to check things for myself as I live a long way away and the house is so often occupied. However, I will be going up very soon and will see what has happened with the WiFi -I have only had problems with this in the last few months, after 5 years. Enjoyed our stay

Just wanted to say a big thank you for letting us hire your property. The house is beautiful, beds comfortable and in a very relaxing area. Certainly a home from home feel. Lovely stay in Muston

We stayed last year and we have just returned this year for another stay as we have family in the area, the house is very spacious, clean, bright and homely. There is everything you need and we preferred the drier to the dishwasher. We stayed with a very large dog who was welcome (which is rare) and she loved sitting in the garden which looked great at this time of year. The area is lovely and the neighbours are very friendly. We will definitely be back.

Generally good

Having done a lot of holidaying in the UK self-catering in cottages, I have a lot of experience to go on. There are both good and bad points of 1 The Green.

Good,: Very Spacious house, nice large kitchen (no problem with the oven for us), nice bathrooms and bedrooms, nice living comfortable lounge and dining room. Lot's of cooking equipment which is sometimes lacking.

Bad: No dishwasher, the place is built for six people (which is how many we had,) therefore the washing up can take quite some time. Most rental cottages have one.

Although I appreciate this is something that can't be changed the stairs are extremely steep with very little depth. There is not a handrail all the way up so if you have any issues with stairs, this place may not be suitable for you as all the bedrooms and bathrooms are upstairs.

Owner's Response: I hope you had an enjoyable stay. Thank you very much for posting an online review. It's very useful to know what people think, so that prospective visitors can know in advance what to expect. As you say, it is not possible to change the stairs, but there is a downstairs toilet, which helps a bit during the day for people who find the stairs difficult. As far as the dishwasher is concerned, I had to choose between a dishwasher and clothes drier, and opted for the drier, as there are often families staying, often in the winter. In the past, the most important factor seemed to be the size of the oven and the fact it is not easy to bake cakes in it - baking cakes has become a very popular activity in recent years! There's lots more I'd love to do but I am afraid I have had to prioritise. Thank you again for your comments. Lynn

Located in the Vale of Belvoir, overlooked by Belvoir Castle, 1 the Green is situated at the side of an ancient village green with a market cross. The village is just off the A1, the main north south road in England, near the village of Bottesford and the market town of Grantham. There is a pub and a tea-room in the village, and a 13th century church.

It's a great place to explore rural England. We recommend walks along the local canal or cycling to villages with pubs and churches to visit.

Don't forget to visit the house where Margaret Thatcher was born in Grantham! You can also make an appointment to visit the birthplace of an even more famous person, Sir Isaac Walton, at Woolsthorpe Manor.There are other historic places to visit such as Belvoir Castle and Belton House, which are nearby. You can also visit Lord Byron's home at Newstead Abbey. Nottingham, which has test matches and a Robin Hood centre, is about 40 minutes away by car. Grantham has a Saturday market, and not far away, the Burghley Horse Trials. There are ancient and beautiful cathedrals and towns a pleasant drive away, and details of everything can be found at the house, plus wireless internet for you to do some research.

Local products include Melton Mowbray pork pies, fresh vegetables and the famous blue Stilton cheese, and there is a fish and chip shop and restaurants in Bottesford a short distance away.

1 the Green is especially popular with families. Both children and older people enjoy the peacefulness of the area and the calm and friendly atmosphere of the house. The house is often used by people who want to go away to meet up with relatives or celebrate an anniversary.
