Claudia, Kevin and Nohealani are the members of our happy family.
We absolutely love sharing our little paradise we have created here on our 4,3 acres in Haiku.
We have built our homes, have landscaped the grounds and maintain it all ourselves to this day.
We continue to add to the beauty, as well as functionality of the land with orchards, vegetable gardens and a palm nursery, all whilst keeping the privacy intact.
We love living off of our land and so do our guests.
We love to be active, play in the ocean when our work schedule allows us, but we also enjoy the calm and serenity of our property.
Away from it all, complete privacy, but so centrally located, that you are close to all of the attractions Maui has to offer. It embraces you as a local resident and invites you to live the real Maui life!
The energy of this beautiful land fulfills you the moment you step foot on it. That is how it began for me in 1995 and continues to do so for my family still and the many wonderful guests we welcome.
"My partner and I have rented Claudia's Hale Mauka Makai on Maui for at least the past four years, usually beginning the middle of December for four to six weeks. We often extend our stay if it is available. We first rented the home after viewing it on the internet and we were not disappointed when we arrived. Their are many homes to rent on the island, but Claudia's house has a warm Hawaiian plantation feel. The design of the home is quite unique and the quality of the workmanship and the furnishings throughout the house are extraordinary, and reflect Claudia's loving care.
We particularly appreciate the privacy of the home due to the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding it as well as our ability to walk outside our door to pick papayas, star fruit, bananas, lemons, limes, and much more. The pool area is also very private and affords a full days sun. Honestly, we seldom go to the beach because we enjoy the privacy we have in sunbathing and swimming in the pool. It also has a panoramic view of Haleakala Volcano where we have gone hiking on numerous occasions. The kitchen is well equipped and we have held dinner parties during our stay.
The home is located just a short distance from popular beaches and island restaurants such as Mama's Fish House and Haliimaile General Store. The casual laid back town of Paia offers wonderful shops, restaurants, one of the best health food stores we have ever shopped, and a gallery of local artists. Haiku and Makawao are close by and the Maui Gym and Maui Studio in Haiku offer a tremendous variety of exercise and dance classes as well as special events and workshops.
Kevin and Claudia are also very accommodating to whatever our needs throughout our stay and keep us well informed about what's happening on the island---especially when "Jaws" 50 feet waves are about to hit so that we can make the drive through the pineapple fields to view it first hand.
There is something for everyone on Maui and each year we experience it as if it were our first time. We are anxiously looking forward to our return to Hale Mauka Makai next month and always feel as though we are visiting our second family when we think of Claudia, Kevin and Nohealani. I couldn't recommend a better vacation home on Maui.
I trust you will have a very memorable island experience with Hale Mauka Makai!"
I lived in Hawaii from 1975 til 1978 and never missed a day being astounded by the beauty of it all. For 34 years I have steadfastly refused to return lest I would have my memories destroyed by the overwhelming commercialization and crowding that have occurred since I left.
Having remarried ten years ago, I finally relented to my new wife's implorings to visit, but I would not be a part of the Kaanapali/Makena madness. So I searched the net and found Hale Mauka Makai after much time spent looking for what I remembered about the Hawaiian paradise I once knew.
The fear I had of disappointment when we arrived vanished when we arrived on the grounds, a surprisingly short drive from the airport.
This was exactly the Hawaii I remembered! Wide open acreage, cooing doves, rampant with blooming flowers everywhere and a drop dead gorgeous house and grounds with absolute utter privacy.
looking down to the ocean on one side and at Haleakala on the other. Trees laden with a variety of tropical fruits are begging to be picked and the pool is pristine.
Claudia, Kevin, and little Nohealani will meet you when you unpack and then, unless you ask, you see no one and no other dwelling for the rest of your stay. There is among the owner's family that exceedingly rare quality that makes you feel like you've known them before and would love to know them forever.
I've read travel reviews more than I care to count over the years in search of our travel destinations, but I have never written one. Hale Mauka Makai and the Ledesma family changed that. Take it from me--- I've lived the classic Hawaiian paradise years ago, and I'm here to tell it is still alive and well if you know where to look.
Look no farther

We have stayed multiple times at this location. Every time we are not disappointed. The home is wonderfully decorated, and the property stunning. The owners welcoming and kind. The location is perfect for us, so close to Haiku and Paia and Hookipa and Baldwin beach. Just perfect! Would not hesitate to stay again and we have already booked our next stay!.
This property is located on the outskirts of the village of Haiku and provides the perfect balance of peace and tranquility with good amenities in the village to chill out and enjoy the fruits of the island. It is also situated close to Paia with may fine eateries.
Claudia is genuinely committed to ensuring that your stay is as good as it can possibly be, on arrival the house was spotlessly clean and the grounds beautifully manicured despite the rare onset of a strong tropical storm. The character of the house and the thought that has gone into the furnishings etc just make it feel special , nespresso machine was a big hit.
The views are also a really special feature, panoramic views over hills down to the ocean and the gardens are beautifully maintained and stocked. Pool area is spacious and nicely secluded with good comfortable loungers with luxuriously soft towels provided.
In all the complete package that made for a really enjoyable and memorable stay for our family, we hope that we can return again in the future. Special thanks to Claudia for all of the preparations made before our visit to ensure we would be comfortable and safe in light of the prospective tropical storm causing damage. As it turned out the intensity reduced and it cleared quickly but the thought and consideration was there which we really appreciated.
Our family had a wonderful stay at Hale Mauka Makai. The past few years we've stayed at a condo on the other side of the island, and this year we decided to try something different - after staying at Hale Mauka Makai it's hard to imagine going back to staying at a condo again. The layout of the home was perfect for our family of 5 - and the home was equipped with everything we needed for a memorable family vacation. Though other homes are nearby, from the house there is complete privacy - all we saw was ocean, the volcano, and the cows next door (though we never smelled them!). We can't wait to go back.
Hale Mauka Makai was the perfect vacation home for my family of four. It’s on a quiet and private location, with the owners, Claudia and Kevin, maybe a hundred yards away, separated by open lawn, flowering shrubs and trees.
The house has amazing comfort and style, with island décor and well maintained furniture. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, you will just need most fridge and pantry items (except for herbs, spices, fruits and veggies—more on that later). Outside the kitchen was a grill which we used almost every night. We loved the espresso maker, the accompanying milk frothier and the variety of coffees. Overall, the house is clean, spacious, and airy especially with the windows and doors open for the trade winds.
The pool is great, and we were able to sling our music to a Bluetooth receiver and have it play outside while we swam. Nice touch, but it didn’t beat the wind rustling in the palm leaves.
The location is fine, maybe thirty minutes to Kahului and an hour to Lahaina or Makena. However, just minutes away are the quirky surf town Paia and the wonderful family friendly beach, Baldwin Beach Park.
The property is lush with trees and flowers. There is a garden of crisp vegetables and fresh herbs (hence not needing to buy your own). We were able to pick oranges, lettuce, parsley, papaya, and more. We were even given a frozen block of real coconut water to use during the week. Amazing. And the bananas…they were sweet and perfect, just the best.
What made the stay special was Claudia and Kevin’s aloha spirit.
We are located just minutes away from the world famous windsurfing and surfing beach 'Hookipa' and the remaining uncrowded north shore beaches.
Right up the road is a collection of wonderful restaurants, a great local supermarket and state of the art fitness and wellness facility.
Paia town, 4 miles away, offers quaint little boutiques and shops as well as an array of restaurants with cuisine from all over the world.
Other Activities: Snorkeling, yoga, wellness, fitness, fine dining, kite surfing
Golf: Maui offers three of the ten most beautiful golf courses in the world. But not only those three, but practically all courses on Maui are worth visiting. The closest being 15 minutes form our home, the furthest an hour scenic drive away.
