About Owner/Manager

We live and work at Oakland Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Asheville, just one mile from the Biltmore Estate and about 7 miles from Avondale Ridge. We are natives of NC and have worked and lived in the Asheville area since the late 1980s. In our 'pre-parent' years we were climbing guides and river guides for local companies in western NC (North Carolina Outward Bound School, Eagle's Nest Camp, Nantahala Outdoor Center, Appalachian Mountain Guides,...), so we know a lot about what to do and where to go in the out of doors in the area. We started a family in 1999 with the adoption of John Andrei (from Russia), and have enjoyed staying at home a bit more as we raise our family. We all bike fairly extensively in the area as a form of recreation and have bicycled the Blue Ridge Parkway, end to end (400 plus miles) in sections and in whole on many occassions. We love this area and hope we can help you enjoy it too!

Why Owner/Manager chose Asheville

Avondale Ridge borders the Blue Ridge Parkway and has lovely westerly views, especially in winter, yet is pretty close to it all. Just 1.5 miles to the confluence of I-40 and I-240, getting into downtown Asheville is quick and easy, yet access to the Parkway and the out of doors is also quick and easy - the best of both worlds. We love the log cabin feel, spaciousness, views and proximity to it all!

What makes this cabin unique

Views off the decks are lovely, especially from the top floor. There are two family rooms, which makes Avondale a great place for family reunions and other gatherings. Just off exit #53 on I-40, the Biltmore Estate is just minutes away, off exit #50 on I-40

I would like to take the time to thank you guys for making our first annual ski trip a success. Thank you Jamison, Mary, Jim, and whoever else I might forget. The Avondale was exactly as you promised and described. My favorite part was the view from the decks and having plenty of firewood accessible. They were both big hits with our team. Let’s not forget about the great “check in”. Having the key in the lock box is a great idea. The sauna, steam shower, jetted tub, and sunroom were definite pluses. Whenever we come to the Asheville area, and need lodging, you can count on us give you guys a call. Thank you

A large additional family/game room (with views & deck) is upstairs & there with futon. The small Bedroom 4, with a bunk bed in it, also opens up off the family room. (accommodations for up to 6 guests on the upper level). Bedrooms 5 & 6 are on the lower level, one with king bed and single twin, one with a Queen bed and bunk bed (accommodations for up to 7 guests on the lower level). There is a bathroom and decking on each level of the house and a Sauna off of the lower level decks. Full size Crib available upon request.

Perfect summer vacation

We spent a week at Avondale Ridge in late July 2017. There were 11 of us in all, ranging in age from 2 to 71.

The house was very comfortable for our large group, clean, and spacious. The adults enjoyed quiet time on the porches with views of the mountains and the sunset on the upper porch. The kids loved having their own space in the basement. The yard is small, and parts of it are quite steep but this made it more fun for our older kids (ages 6-10). They even found a wild blackberry bush. The air conditioning systems worked well, the furniture and beds were comfortable. The neighborhood was quiet, although we could hear road noise from the highway in the distance. We appreciated some of the extra conveniences, such as having a crib and highchair on request, and the extra fridge in the basement. Even though it was summer we had a fire outside in the fire pit, which was fun. It was a quick 10-15 minute drive to downtown Asheville. It was also very close to the Biltmore and the Western North Carolina Nature Sanctuary.

The drive to the house is steep and twisty. We were expecting this based on the description, so were not surprised. Fortunately, we all arrived before dark. Noise did travel easily in the house -- not through the walls, but from the creaking ceilings of the upper floors to the lowers when people were walking above. This was not really that big a deal, considering all the other positives of the house. All in all, I would definitely recommend Avondale Ridge. We would return again.

Family reunion

Great house and location for our recent family reunion. Granted, the road up was a challenge, but worth it. We especially loved sitting out on the deck, sipping our coffee and/or wine. The seat cushions, however, need to be replaced. Great proximity into the city and into the mountains.

Nice house for our group of 12

Loved the 3 full bathrooms! Would be nice to have some mirrors in the bedrooms to help with getting ready. Had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Had a great weekend in Asheville!

Older mountain home with a wonderful view

13 girls came on a weekend trip to Asheville. We had a wonderful time and there was plenty of sleeping space. 3 bathrooms and 2 living rooms. We had Uber's pick us up and drop us off at all hours of the day and night with out any issue.

Great group home with lots of beds and space

We had a group of 14 girls stayed for a long weekend. We really enjoyed the house and all it had to offer. The views from the decks are beautiful and the porches provided a great space for us to gather at night for cocktails before heading into town. The living room is large with plenty of seating, even for a group our size. The large dining table allowed us to have breakfast at the house one morning. Everyone had a comfortable bed and bedroom, and the three bathrooms wasn't an issue for our group during the short stay. The road is very steep getting up to the house, so keep that in mind when arriving after dark, but the house felt remote and relaxing and surrounded by nature, while still being a 15 minute ride from town. We took ubers all weekend and none of them had an issue accessing the house. They were about $15 to get downtown and very convenient.

Many in the group wished they could stay all week. The driveway had plenty of space for all the cars from our group (5 cars) plus the ubers coming and going. We will certainly return to this home on our next trip to Asheville.

Amazing house with plenty of space and amazing views

My family came here to stay for my wedding! It was the perfect place to stay- everyone had their own level and plenty of space! The views are unbelievable from the decks. Perfect place for a large group or family!! We would definitely recommend this house to others and would come back to stay!!

Location, location! All with privacy, lovely views & convenience. Avondale Ridge borders the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) National Park and is conveniently accessed - just a mile off NC Hwy 74 - at the confluence of I-40, I-240 and nearby ramp access to the BRP - extremely convenient to downtown Asheville (just outside the city limits & about 5 miles to downtown - views of the south side of city from the decks), the Biltmore Estate (next exit west off I-40 - maybe 10 minutes away), & Chimney Rock Park (Chimney Rock Park is about 23 miles south on Hwy 74). Downtown has wonderful, eclectic, local dining & shopping. What a great town to walk & explore. Grocery shopping is located within five minutes of the house on Hwy 74 along with additional shopping & dining. Asheville is great for Antiquing, Arts & Craft shopping, dining, hiking, biking, golfing, and all the Southern Appalachian & Western NC Mountains have to offer. Call for suggestion about what to do
