Fun and funky apartment

  • 4 of 5

A great little apartment in a wonderful, artsy town. Our hostess Assunta met us and helped us get our luggage up the cobblestones to our door. Parking is at the plaza below as no cars are allowed in the town. Built into the hillside the dining area is literally in the rocks of the hill. Great view out the living room window as well as from the bathroom. Sleeping arrangements were a bit unusual but proved to be quite comfortable. One bed up the spiral stairs, others were a futon and chairs that made into beds. The 4 of us were quite comfortable. Lots of great artists and small restaurants very near by. We were glad we found this great place to stay.

At 50 km from Rome, to the north, straddling the Cassia and Flaminia and the provinces of Rome and Viterbo, the village of Calcata, perched on top of a mountain of tufa, overlooking the green valley of the river Treja. From the village you can access several nature trails, passable on foot or on horseback, crossing the Valley Regional Park Treja. Nearby, Lake Bracciano, Lake Martignano, Lake Vico, the Borgo di Sutri, Terme di Viterbo and Stigliano.

Since the seventies, the village is populated with the arrival of painters, sculptors, designers, architects and more. Today Calcata is kind of a place out of the world, which from a distance looks like the classic medieval village as there are so many, but once through the narrow streets you'll immediately notice that the atmosphere is different. Only a few dozen people live permanently in Calcata, and if there was a statistic on the rate per capita of creativity this place would be at the top of the world, and this is reflected a bit 'everywhere - on signs, in the shops, in the choice of colors and of each feature of the place. A walk to Calcata is something that restores the spirit and reduces background noise to the pace and frenzy of everyday life; Montreal is home to the placid serenity that becomes a soft relaxed, almost zen.
