We Loved Our Whispering River Reeds Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband, toddler, and I had a wonderful week's stay at Whispering River Reeds cottage. We loved the cottage itself with its peaceful location and beautiful views, and appreciated the cleanliness, the fluffy towels, and the soft sheets, as well as the owners' thoughtful little touches of coffee, cookies, and strawberries left for us. We have rented other places before and could not have been happier that anything needed outside of groceries was provided for us! We also appreciated the wealth of information and local recommendations from the owners and having access to the beach pass. We enjoyed making s'mores over the backyard fire pit and relaxing in the hammock watching the boats. Our almost two-year-old found countless things in and around the cottage to play with and ignite his imagination, and we enjoyed exploring the immediate area and also taking day trips into Bath, Boothbay Harbor, and Phippsburg for a day at Popham's Beach, which is outstanding and our most highly recommended visit! Our top tips are to bring plenty of bug spray with you to Reid State Park, and to consider bringing bottled water for drinking during your stay as we were a little unsure of the water from the tap (although the owners say it's perfectly fine to drink). Also if you have small kids and rely on certain shows like we do with our Elmo fan, or even want to watch anything yourself during the week, download enough for your stay before you come. We planned to use our Firestick but had very spotty cell phone/data service and there is no WiFi. Overall we loved our vacation and would absolutely return to Whispering River Reeds in the future!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Erin, for letting us know about the water situation. It appears that the drought we are experiencing in Georgetown accounts for the little specks in the well water, even after filtering. We are providing bottled water until we get some rain. The water is still fine for bathing and washing dishes. Reid State Park is one of the many treasures that Georgetown offers. I hope you were able to use the tidal pool at Griffith Head. Perfect for toddlers and warmer than the ocean too. We look forward to seeing you in the future.

A wonderful cottage !

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about the attentiveness of our hosts, Susie and Dave Reed. The cottage was very well appointed, spotless, and very comfortable and welcoming. They thought of everything, and everytime I looked for a utensil, or informational brochure- i turned around, and there it was. I am still thinking about their wonderful cottage with it's beautiful views- hope to see you next year !

Owner's Response: We loved having a glass of wine with you, sitting on the screened porch, waiting for the sun to set. Sharing our cottage with others is one of our great pleasures. Thank you for your kind words.

Real Downeast Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Whispering River Reeds was a total getaway for us - away from the discord of international and national news and events, away from the dust motes of our everydays. Way down a meandering road and perched high above the Kennebec near its mouth, here is a clean, pine-paneled, plain and super-comfortable place, plus a hospitable hammock under towering pine and a wonderful panorama of coastal Maine. Our hosts, Susie and David, sent us little gifts for each of the three weeks we spent. The marvelous Reid State Park and its beaches were 15 minutes away, as was the very popular Five Islands Lobster Co. A reader's/writer's/artist's mini-paradise.

Lovely, well maintained cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our first stay at Whispering Reeds, and perfect for my husband and myself! The cottage is so well constructed, clean and beautifully decorated. We especially enjoyed relaxing and reading on the screened in porch, or just the view of the water and boats.

Dave and Susie left home baked cookies and coffee for us as a warm welcome, and were very responsive to any concerns. The cottage is at the end of a long, curvy road, but their directions were great!

Having a season pass to Reid State Park allowed us to enjoy daily walks on the beach. Also recommend lobster roll at Five Islands and the Osprey restaurant. We appreciated their recommendations of restaurants in Bath, a wonderful small town with much to see.

I Would Rent It Again in a Hearbeat

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful cozy cottage is clean, comfortable, and sits on a lovely high spot overlooking the bay. It has everything a small family or two couples need for a relaxing time off the grid. The hammock, screened in porch with plenty of seating, firepit, grill and Adorondeck chairs were all we needed for enjoying the outdoors while at home. We were amazed that it was truly the quietest place we had ever sounds except for the wind and falling acorns could be heard. The locals at the little grocery store and at Georgetown Pottery just up the road were friendly and helpful about where to go and what to see. Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, and Acadia National Park, as well as plenty of others are within easy driving distance. We were especially interested in local art, and there is plenty. We found the Trip Advisor app to be extremely helpful in taking us down winding roads to artists studios where we found truly talented local artists of all ages. This app also took us to the best pizza, local. music and just about anything else you would want to do.

Owners Dave and Susie could not have been kinder or more responsive from my first email to my most recent. Little touches of home like comfortable beds, fluffy towels, coffee and homemade cookies waiting for us, and just about everything else you need were supplied. They also have a National Park pass and plenty of books for your enjoyment during your stay. We can't wait to go back!

Owner's Response: It was truly our pleasure to host you. I'm so glad you enjoyed reading Shoutin' into the Fog by Thomas Hanna. His story of growing up in the Five Islands area of Georgetown in the Depression really made me want to explore and visit every place he mentions in the story. We love providing books to help give our guests a feel for the area. By the way, the next guests said "Thanks" for the items you left in the fridge. Hurry back!

Terrific Cottage

  • 5 of 5

As usual, had a terrific time at the cottage this summer. A few years ago I discovered this gem that suits so well. It's a great base from which to visit with local family and friends in the summer. It's remote enough to give you space to breathe, but close enough to enjoy lobsta', the beach and just hanging out.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us again this summer. We agree that the cottage is a gem. Perhaps you will return during blueberry season so you can enjoy blueberry cake with your lobsta' dinner.
