About John Smethurst
I built the barge in Gloucester, with some help! We started in 2002, and finished the fit out in 2005. We sailed from Gloucester to the from London to Calais. We cruised a few thousand kilometers around France, and then finally moored here in Aigues-Mortes in 2007. I had previously spent 35 years in the Fashion all aspects.
John Smethurst purchased this House Boat in 2002
Why John Smethurst chose Aigues-Mortes
I have put my heart and soul into this magnificent project. I want to share this pleasurable experience with you. We have dropped our prices for 2018 We recognise that things are not fantastic economically. We do are permanently moored.
What makes this House Boat unique
I am only letting out two cabins on my luxury barge which is my permanent home. On one side of the ship is the 'Canal Maritime' Built originally in Medieval times by King Louis, so his ships could quickly access the sea, and where two Crusades departed from. Beyond our quay, is a small lane. The 'Route du Mole', but which Google for some inexplicable reason calls 'La Rayette'! It is bordered by a field that is the start of the National Park. (La Marette). We are about 300 meters from the Grand Site de la Marette. The main benefit of our mooring is that we are quiet because there is not much traffic but. we are only a mere twelve minutes walk from the center of Aigues-Mortes. The floodlit ramparts dominate the view from our decks. After ten years we are surrounded and accepted by the wildlife. If you love nature and prefer some luxury, we are for you!

Lovely houseboat in a stunning location
We spent an excellent couple of days on board the Saul Nomad enjoying John's excellent hospitality, walking into the gorgeous walled town of Aigues Mortes and taking boat trips along the rivers and canals.
Saul Nomad is very comfortable and well-equipped (air con, satellite TV, Wifi...) and John is a great host.
Un réveillon de charme
Nous avons passé un formidable séjour sur la péniche de John...
C'est formidable et romantique de pouvoir dîner dans le poste de pilotage tout en ayant la vue sur les remparts ...
John étant aux petits soins pour ses hôtes.
Novel and great experience with friendly host, John.
Spacious cabin on a delightfull boat, moored right accross from the Aigues Mort vieux city walls. - a great change from a hotel room. John provided lovely hospitlity..
Thanks for your kind words. We always try our best.
très bon séjour original.
Nous avons passé de très bonnes vacances sur la péniche qui est confortable et bien aménagée avec des prestations de qualité.
My French is embarrassingly poor, and without my French partner (away on grandmother duty) I was struggling to communicate They are a lovely couple, and were perfect house guests.
sejours a aigues mortes

Map
Aigues-Mortes is a renowned walled medieval town. It was a base for the seventh and eighth crusades. Barbarossa anchored his fleet off its shores. Lawrence of Arabia studied here before WWl. Ernest Hemingway was writing here in 1933, and returned in 1961 with house guests Ava Gardner and Jackie Kennedy.
Places of interest to visit are the seasalt works, The local manades where black fighting bulls are raised. (generally they do not get killed in the local form of 'bull fighting'. The bulls are controlled by the superb horsemanship of the gardians riding their characteristically white horses. We are surrounded by vineyards, and many welcome visitors. Every kind of watersport is catered for. Quadbiking, paintballing and so forth are only ten minute ride away.
Of course there are the long sandy beaches that stretch for miles/kilometers. There are busy beaches, quiet beaches, and nudist beaches.
