Pridhamsleigh Manor Farm is a 16th Century Grade II listed property situated on the Southern edge of Dartmoor National Park and Ashburton. Manor Farm and Barns have undergone a massive restoration by the present owners over the last 2 years, and offer a unique property converted in a contemporary fashion, still retaining the character, beams and quirkiness associated with this type of building. The furnishings are stylish, yet homely and comfortable. The property overlooks an attractive courtyard, with rolling hills, forests and beautiful views all around. Free WIFI.

The barns are an ideal base from which to explore many areas of the South Hams and Dartmoor.

Dartmouth, Totnes,Salcombe and Bigbury On Sea are some of the beautiful locations nearby. Dartmoor National Park is just metres away where you can walk, ride, fish, nearby historic towns such as Tavistock and Widecombe in the Moor and a wide variety of spectacular landmarks.

The property is midway between Plymouth and Exeter.

There are a number of National Trust properties within the area.

Exeter is a beautiful University Town, with Museums, Restaurants, and interesting shops.

Milk Churn Cottage is a Grade 2 listed restored barn with beautiful scissor open beams. It has luxurious new furnishings to make your stay as comfortable as possible.Superb open plan Lounge/Diner Kitchen upstairs with vast beams.Very comfortable yet stylish furniture, and good selection of cooking pots, pans and utensils

Attention to detail in the two bedrooms with stylish yet pretty bedlinen, again with beams, and a fully fitted bathroom with lovely new rain shower and bath,

Local Attractions: Dartmoor National Park – Dartmoor National Park is the largest area of open country in England covering some 368 square miles. It is an exceptionally beautiful place to visit at any time of the year, with wide expanses of open moorland, wooded gorges and tumbling rocky rivers.

Buckfast Abbey – A modern Benedictine Abbey with wonderful stained glass windows and gardens. The famous Buckfast tonic wine and honey can be purchased in the gift and produce shops.

The Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary – Situated near the South Devon Steam Railway station. Feed the otters and enjoy the wonderful butterflies in a tropical setting. You can even be an otter keeper for the day!

South Devon Railway – Relax and enjoy the unspoilt views of the river Dart from the comfort of a South Devon Railway, steam or vintage diesel train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

Towns: ASHBURTON– A very attractive Stannary town dating from Saxon times. It has a superb selection of antique and craft outlets, together with many interesting shops and eating places, and a lovely bakery, making fresh bread and cakes daily.

BUCKFASTLEIGH Vibrant, lively and with a touch of mystery surrounding it, you’ll discover that Buckfastleigh is one of the most diverse towns in South Devon. The town is dominated by the Benedictine Buckfast Abbey and is a mix of ancient and modern attractions surrounded by miles of prime Devon countryside, wild moorlands and hidden valleys to explore.

TOTNES – An Elizabethan market town with lots of interesting shops and eating places and the ruins of a Norman castle. From the quay take a relaxing boat trip to Dartmouth.

DARTMOUTH– Only a 35 minute drive away, Dartmouth is a Historic town full of narrow streets, art galleries, delicatessens and other interesting shops. It is home to the world renown Britannia Royal Naval College.

Pridhamsleigh Cavern: Opposite Pridhamsleigh Manor Farm is Pridhamsleigh Cavern this is the second longest cave system in Devon and has been accessible for at least 2 centuries. It was presumably revealed, like most Devon caves, by quarrying. A large entrance portal leads to an insignificant crawl into the rest of the system - about 700 metres of so of complex, maze like muddy passages through which a variety of routes can be taken.

If you wish to visit the cave please approach by approved route through the orchard containing the ancient dove cote. There is a fee of £1.50 to the farmer payable down the chute in the wooden kiosk at the gated entrance.

About Wendy Waghorn

Graham and I loved this area of Devon and had a holiday apartment in Bigbury, we had renovated 3 or 4 other properties, so when the Manor House and barns came up for Auction we couldn't resist it. It really is a beautiful area. It has been hard work, but very rewarding and it is great seeing guests faces when they arrive as it has a real WOW factor.

Graham's background is TV and film. He worked for the BBC as a Director of Photography and Cameraman on Films and TV for over 25 years. My background was Fashion Buying for 20 years, with a switch over to Interiors Buying and Desisn.

Why Wendy Waghorn chose Ashburton

The brilliant things about this property are the fact that you are tucked away in a small quiet lane yet close enough to the A38 to be able to jump on it and travel around easily (avoiding the narrow country lanes). Plus you are in the middle of countryside and beside Dartmoor, but also very close to the Coast and some beautiful harbours. The history of the building is amazing. Beams galore!

What makes this barn unique

The great thing is we have plenty of space, and so my daughter, and grandchildren can stay whenever they like. My grandson loves it so much he has visited on every school holiday so far.

My grand daughter stayed 4 times during the last Summer holidays.

They love all the coastal areas, and wild horses.

Lovely well equipped cottage with easy access to dartmoor and the coast

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage, very well equipped and travel cot, high chair and stair gate all provided for our baby. Big open plan kitchen / sitting room. Good sized bedrooms and comfortable bed. The bathroom is a good size and great with a baby as it has a bath. The bathroom is the only part of the cottage that didn't quite meet the high standard of the rest of the property, just slightly tired looking compared to the rest. We would definitely return for another stay here in the future though!

Nice outdoor area and lots of parking. Outdoor games provided too.

Good location if you want to split time between dartmoor and the south coast.

A brilliant home away to discover Devon

  • 5 of 5

A perfect holiday! We were staying at Milk Churn Cottage with 3 kids aged 5, 9 and 11. Even though the bedrooms are not very big, it was perfectly laid out for a relaxing holiday. The big open plan upstairs livinfmg room and kitchen was perfect and we didn't miss a single item - everything was there that one could possibly need.

Some very good and inexpensive pubs around for dinner, both the kids and us enjoyed every meal. The cottage is in perfect location between Dartmoor and the coast and we thought it would take us weeks to see everything, we ended up having to make a choice and even our boys were never bored. The little gated space in front of the cottage is perfect to let kids unwind playing table tennis and to read a good book in the sun.

All communication per email and at the cottage with Wendy was totally easy and relaxed and she made sure to provide tips and infos and helped us mastering TV and DVD, which was great in the evenings.

The motorway is not far, but the house was very quiet and we had the most relaxing half term.

We would come again and I highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your excellent review! It really makes the hard work and attention to detail all worth while!! I am so glad your sons enjoyed the Steak pie at the Dartmoor Inn and that you felt the pubs and restaurants we recommended were good quality and value for money. The table tennis has become very popular this year. It was a pleasure having you and your family to stay, and we would gladly welcome your return. Best wishes, Wendy

Milk churn cottage is really very good value for money. It is well equipped, clean and tastefully decorated. We also enjoyed the location. Ashburton on your doorstep is very nice, dartmoor is right there and you are within 30 minutes of beaches and a hist of other attractions. Our very active boys were never bored. The owners are also very friendly and happy to help. All in all thoroughly recomnended.

A warm and homely cottage in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

Milk Churn Cottage was like a home from home. Very nicely laid out, very clean and tidy and with an overall feeling of comfort and homeliness. Really convenient location as well, less than 5 mins from Buckfast Abbey, 15 mins from Totnes centre with lots of places to eat and a supermarket, 5 mins from Dartmoor as well. There are some useful guides in terms of places to eat and things to do locally which includes recommendations for local pubs and restaurants, but in all honesty my wife and I could happily have spent all of our time in the cottage whilst there as the living area is so well geared to everything you need. We will also be returning when we have a family as the cottage is set up nicely to support children with toys and a wii in the living room, and you can also keep an eye on them while cooking because of the open plan living space upstairs. Wendy is lovely and was a pleasure to deal with prior to arrival, the process was straightforward and easy, and we found a lovely note and a bottle of wine waiting for us in the cottage on arrival, very welcome at the end of a long journey! We would absolutely recommend Wendy and Milk Churn Cottage, a lovely break and we will be returning.

Lovely Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Milk Churn Cottage was clean, tidy and well equipped. The best self catering accommodation we have stayed in for years! Wendy and Graham made both us and our two dogs Maddie and Betsy very welcome. Wendy went out of her way to give us local dog walks which we all enjoyed. The cottage is in a perfect location, with easy access to Dartmoor and the Coast. Ashburton, the nearest village is also worth a visit.

We would not hesitate to recommend a stay at Milk Churn Cottage and hope to get the opportunity to visit again soon.

Thank you once again Wendy and Graham.

Great cottage,in a great location to explore Devon

  • 5 of 5

Great cottage with great facilities as described, we would definitely stay here again. Wendy looked after us and made sure that there were toys for our 4 year old to play with, she really enjoyed sleeping in the bunk beds. Being close to the A38 makes it easy to get around and explore South Devon.

If you like good beer and very good home made pub food, then make sure you go to the Rugglestone Inn at Widecombe in the moor, but get their early or book if you want to eat. Also try The Studio teashop in Ashburton for lunch or afternoon tea, we have never been made more welcome in a cafe with beautiful home cooked food and cakes.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your really kind comments. We really enjoyed your stay, it was very interesting to chat to you about your "travels" I am so glad you liked our recommendation of the Rugglestone Inn it is also one of our favourites. I am looking forward to visiting The Studio for tea with my Grand daughter in the Summer Holidays, from your recommendation. We like to try and make the bedroom welcoming for the children on holiday, so I am really glad your daughter enjoyed her stay. I know you said the Gruffalo was her favourite book so that was obviously a good choice. It is very kind of you to write us a review, I hope your trip back to New Zealand was OK and we would welcome your lovely family back at any time. Best Wishes, Wendy and Graham

The history of Pridhamsleigh Manor Farm on the borders of Dartmoor dates back to the 16th Century when it was one of Devons most important properties.Tradition has it that in the 1700's Pridhamsleigh was lost as a gambling debt by the Gould family.

Pridhamsleigh Manor Farm is on the southern edge of Dartmoor, close to the historic towns of Ashburton and Buckfastleigh.

Pridhamsleigh Manor Barns (1860's) are a perfect base from which to explore many areas of the South Hams the coast and Dartmoor. If you have a love of the sea then places such as Dartmouth, Bigbury On Sea and Salcombe easily come to mind or explore Dartmoor where you can walk, ride, fish, white water kayak on the river Dart and visit historic towns such as Tavistock and Widecombe in the Moor.

There are fantastic pubs in Ashburton and nearby on Dartmoor where good food can be enjoyed in a true country pub setting.

PLEASE NOTE: The Manor House and Barns have undergone considerable renovation, google earth does not show this.
