The Celorico de Basto Municipality belongs to the district of Braga and integrates the very ancient and characteristic area known as Terra de Basto. This area is centered in the middle section of the valley of the river Tamega in the transition between the Minho and Tras-os-Montes. It is a very rural county, whose deep traces in the territory and landscape are due to agricultural activity dominant until the end of the last century. It presents mountainous area characteristics, with dense forests and countless valleys that frame an extensive network of waterways. It is undeniable that, connected to the earth's history of Basto is arguably the Castle Celorico, commonly known as Arnoia Castle. The "Villa de Basto" was the first seat of the county and was born and have blossomed along with this military monument. Only in April 1719 it was transferred to the parish Britelo and the appointment of "Vila Nova de Freixieiro". The urban expansion of the seat of the county has been accompanied by the creation of large green and garden spaces and a wide range of collective use equipment, which gives it an attractive look and where you can enjoy modern comforts. Reach Celorico was once an adventure. Today it is very easy and fast to get here. Visit Celorico de Basto and its numerous solar and camellia gardens. Be sure to visit the Castle, the Arnoia Monastery and our vast and rich religious heritage. Enjoy the local cuisine and do not miss a walk through our Ecopista installed in the channel space off line railway, iron.
