About PHIL DENNIS

I was very lucky to be born in Broadstairs and I have lived here all my life.

Barnaby's Lodge was one of the first houses to be built in this lovely town.

I am a builder and have lovingly restored this unique cottage to it's former glory.

PHIL DENNIS purchased this cottage in 1992

Why PHIL DENNIS chose Kent

This cottage was built in 1680 with parts of it built out of chalk blocks carved out of the cliffs and flint, really anything they could find on the beach.

Broadstairs is a great place to come and visit and the cottage is located in a prime location, just a stones throw from the main beach Viking Bay, you could not wish to be any closer, with all the shops and restaurants on your door step.

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage boasts of ships timbers to the ceilings and walls and is one of a kind.

It's such a cosy cottage, you can not help falling in love with it.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Couldn't have been happier. Lovely little cottage, great location, everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. Kids were really happy there and Phil was responsive, friendly and helpful. Thanks.

Cozy and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Very impressed. Everything we needed was provided. Perfect location literally a minute from the beach and restaurants. Situated in a tiny cul-de-sac courtyard which was quiet even on busy nights. Lovely outside area to sit and unwind. Difficult to find any downsides - except to say beware on the stairs as they are quite steep and can be slippery. Will definitely be booking this cottage again

Barnaby Lodge

  • 5 of 5

A very cute, cosy cottage, just big enough for the four of us. Very well equipped, comfy beds and nice little garden. We liked staying somewhere so old and wondered about the history of the place. And of course, superb location, but you know that, its obvious. Thankyou Phil, we had a very happy little holiday. Carey family.

Owner's Response: Dear Laura. Thank you for your positive comments. There is a little write up about the cottage in the Home Away hospitality page, but for anybody else who might be interested, it is over 400 years old and I believe it is one of the first to be built here in Broadstairs. Thanks again and hope to see you next year! Kind regards. Phil.

Lovely cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

perfect! We were so close to the beach. The cottage is in the heart of the Old Town of Charles Dickens' Broadstairs. We really felt that we had travelled back in time but with modernity at our fingertips. Everything about the cottage was perfect for our stay, it was nice and clean and everything was in good working order. There is a lovely space to sit outside and eat breakfast in the mornings.

Phil was an excellent Host. I would really recommend Barnaby Lodge

Lovely characterful cottage

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful week staying in this lovely old cottage in Broadstairs. So much character yet still had modern comforts like central heating! In a great location within easy walking distance of all the shops and restaurants and very close to the sea - perfect.

I do think that the cottage would benefit from having a shower but that would be my only criticism. Loved it.

Great location, quaint cottage.

  • 5 of 5

It's a lovely little cottage in a great location. 2mins walk to good pubs, bars, restaurants and the beach. Would definitely recommend. Only downside is the bathroom is downstairs and without a shower, although there is an attachment.

Come and stay in one of our four 17th & 18th century grade 2 listed cottages in the heart of Broadstairs.

Pets are welcome in Barnaby's, even they need a holiday too!

Whatever your pleasure…come and enjoy some Broadstairs treasure!

You will be guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome whenever you come to Broadstairs. This picturesque town has a special atmosphere all of its own. Originally a small fishing hamlet, the towns ancient maritime past is nowhere more clearly seen, than in the huddle of cottages, old customs house & 16th century weather boarded boat house which nestle around the harbour.

Broadstairs other major industry was Smuggling!

Daniel Defoe noted that, of the 300 habitants, 27

were fishermen & the others had no visible means of

support. Barnaby's Lodge was just one of

those cottages used by the smugglers. The beauty of

Broadstairs is not only stunning beaches, but a vast

mixture of shops, galleries, museums, & shows.

An excellent selection of pubs, restaurants, bistros & take aways you can experience; Italian, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Chinese, or traditional English food all within easy distance from your choice of accommodation.

If shopping is your pleasure, drive out to the new shopping centre at

Westwood Cross, just five minutes away, where you will find the large

department stores, or visit Historical Canterbury which is only 30

minutes away by car or train. The town is served well by bus, road &

rail.

If you enjoy the outdoor life, then experience a Viking Coastal Trail.

Winding your way through beaches, historic villages to where the

history of England really began!

The charm & heritage of Broadstairs has captivated generations of visitors, with popular events which are celebrated with great enthusiasm such as Dickens Week.

A colourful array of characters in period costumes re-enact the old days & bring history alive by one of England’s greatest writers Charles Dickens.

Another example is Folk Week, where the whole town comes alive &

bursts into music, dancing, & torchlight parades, bringing visitors from

all over the world. Folk Week celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Other attractions also include: Water Gala, Air Show, Sailing Regatta,

Horse Shows, Beer & Food Festivals, Power Boat Show plus so much

more, something for the whole family, whatever your age.

Relax & enjoy the view of the harbour, from the Bandstand with live

music where you can see the fishermen setting off to make their living

on the high seas of the English Channel.
