Overview

Southern Coast of Maine Cottage Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, sleeps 12 (prefer 10), 2 bathrooms w/OH!!

Situated just 3' from shore, on the all day SUNNY SIDE and widest portion of UPPER Mousam Lake, this 1893 Victorian styled cottage offers privacy and ambiance. Being the oldest (118 years) of the original Meader GAR Camps, there is much history still to be felt or found. There is gradual sloping, clear & sandy bottom, private swimming as well as canoeing, fishing (small & large mouth bass, stocked salmon, and trout/togue), walking, golf and biking. Located 2 hours from Boston and only 40 minutes from the coastal beaches of Ogunquit and Kennebunkport or the White Mountains of NH, there is much to enjoy.

Cottage wise the first floor (lake level) has a large fully equipped kitchen with a substantial dining area. Along the water-front portion is a wide open large, 2 couched (double sofa bed), living room, parlor plus the private master bedroom (double). The second floor has an additional master bedroom (2 doubles) plus a 3rd bedroom with 2 twins. Outside? Hardscaped and landscaped

Whatever might I type here?: There is a 4th bedroom/loft with 2 twins as well. The nicely landscaped yard is huge and includes a 12' picnic table, yard furniture, a deck plus a gas barbecue grill. On the 'other side' we have just completed a lovely hardscaped multi-terraced patio and 'pined' fire pit area. As the seasons change try to imagine the benefits of visiting us during one of our Spring or Fall weeks or weekends and at a discount to the norm.

A Perfect Taste of Maine

  • 5 of 5

We brought our daughter and her three children (almost 2, almost 4 and almost 6) to Maine to relive her childhood (she grew up in Acton across the lake) and introduce the California youngsters to Maine.

The Lincoln cottage was the perfect headquarters for our week. It's bright and open, with an easy flow of activity from the lawn, beach and patio, but possessed of nooks and crannies conducive to private time. It's perfectly neat and scrupulously clean, without being fussy or forbidding.

Highlights: Movies on Mom's i-pad in the attic loft while lightning flashed through the diamond-shaped stained glass window. Canoe outings on the still water of early mornings. Swimming anytime of the day on the kid-sized beach just steps from the cottage. Blueberry picking on the web of dirt roads surrounding Mousam Lake.

Landlords Russ and Dee were gracious and thoughtful from first contact to final departure.

Gorgeous Lakeside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What an awesome spot for some family time and R&R! Our family spent the week of the fourth here and it was the perfect spot. On our first day we threw a baby shower for our son and DIL who live out of town. Expecting to have the beautiful grounds as our setting, we were highly disappointed ( and panicked) to discover a forecast of 100% chance of rain. Russ, the owner who lives next door came to our rescue with a tarp to hang off the back of the cottage. As it turned out, all 24 guests fit comfortably in the cottage and we has a quaint and pleasant party.

The setting could not be more gorgeous or serene. The lake literally laps up to the rock wall directly at the house. The beautiful front lawn, direct lakefront deck, gradual entry beach, and firepit area, all made for the greatest week of lakefront family bonding time.

The interior is rustic and very "campy". There were plenty of beds for all 5 adults and overnight guests. Everything we needed was provided including plenty of extra blankets for cool Maine nights. My only complaint was the largest bed was a double and I'd have preferred a queen in the MBR. Other than that the Lincoln Cottage was a perfect vacation spot and Russ and Dee were perfect hosts. We will be returning only for a longer stay!,

Owner's Response: THANK YOU Donna and Alan! Obviously it was great having you as our "newest best neighbors" during your vacation, reunion, baby shower. It's always nice knowing that those visiting Maine, Mousam Lake, and our "GAR President Lincoln" cottage know how to relax, have fun, and enjoy themselves with their families and friends. Be assured, although we've been trying to KISS (keep it simple) since 1986 with only twins and doubles/full size beds, we will take your suggestion and finally transition the master bed to a queen...especially since we value repeat guests at the top of our list, and your intentions to return were quite obvious as you departed. In closing, let me add that when you quickly came over and hugged my wife, Dee, exclaiming "new best friend", we knew we had a keeper. See you next year! Russ

Great vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

Great location, great lake, awesome place to relax with plenty to do in surrounding area if you want to be on the go. We found Shaine's of Maine for cheap/awesome lobster rolls and clam chowder - oh and great homemade ice cream too!

I cant say enough good things about our visit to Mousam Lake - our boys (10 & 13) had fun riding their bikes, swimming out to floating dock, fishing, etc. etc.

We would go back for sure! Oh, and Russ was great to rent from - my son left a baseball hat in the cottage and Russ shipped it back to us!! Thank you for everything Russ!!

Owner's Response: Thank you Arla & Loren. Nothing better than a repeating guests though these reviews are also appreciated. In 27 years we have managed to do a "meet & greet" with all but about 3 or 4 (of 270) guests. I recall yours as literally one of the very shortest, due to a family commitment on my part. It was nice meeting you, and upon doing so I could tell, "This is a good family! They are going to have a great week." Mom, dad, and 2 well behave, very attentive kids. Hope to see you next year. Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cottage last summer, it was fabulous! Even though there is a tv, we didn't use it, every night we played board games with the kids, or sat out on the dock or porch and enjoyed the peace and quiet!

The kids fished all day, paddled around in the canoe, road their bikes and enjoyed swimming out to the floating dock.

The cottage itself is cozy, just what you would expect of an antique lake cottage and I initially thought it would be too small, but we were so busy enjoying the lake that I soon realized the cottage was just perfect in size! It was neat and tidy, the beds were confortable, and the two smaller rooms each had bunk beds so there was plenty of room for our 2 boys.

We took a few day trips, its a good location with stuff to do around, but honestly, this year, I would be very happy just sitting on the dock relaxing!

We can't wait to go back again this summer!

Quaint Lakeside Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at this cottage twice now, although 4 yrs apart. It never changes and thats a good thing. Its on the sunny side of the lake and the way the porch is positioned, it feels like you're floating on the water! The bedrooms are tiny with very thin walls and we never really spent any time up there, but just to sleep so it didnt matter. The kitchen is equipped with all you need sans the food. And grocery stores are not that far away. The bathroom is tiny and very rustic, but it has all you need: toilet, shower and sink. The owners are trustworthy, gracious and helpful at all times. True Mainers!!! The wrap around porch is wonderful too. There is nothing luxurious about this place but it has a pesonality and quaintness that I just love. There is a tv and we did get several channels. My son caught his first fish off the dock!! My daughter wrote us an essay on why we should buy the cottage when she was 11 yrs old. And when we returned when she was 15 she still insisted we purchase the cottage...oh! if only we had the funds!!! But I will be happy just to rent a week or two every summer for now. The water is clean and clear. My kids loved swimming off the dock to the owners floating dock out a distance. There is a motor boat available for rent. Also a canoe is available. The town of Shapleigh is tiny with little to offer. There is a store called Boonies down about 4 mi. Its quaint and fully stocked with whatever you need. It has good fresh hot coffee and the people are fabulous. The closest restaurant is a fish fry place called "Teds" that is ok. They sell lobsters and the prices weren't too expensive. The ice cream was very good. Keep in mind that the town shuts down around 8pm on a weekend in August. If you want to relax and just wash your troubles away, this is a place to be!! Love it! Can't wait to go back next summer!!!

Owner's Response: Wow! You've been so gratious with your accolades. Thank you. Visiting and seeing you and your family grow with us is as good as it gets. We lost you for a couple years and are please to have you back. There is no better advertising than that of repeat guests. Truly wish you and yours could figure out a watt become "permanent" neighbors!

The place to be!

  • 5 of 5

I spent the weekend with my wife and 2 young daughters (7 and 8). We had a great time! The place is exactly as described, quaint, clean, cozy little Maine cottage on the water with all of the basics. The lake is THE amenity. We spent our time on the porch, in the water and cruising up and down the lake with the available boat provided by the owner (additional fee, worth the cost). Take advantage of this option as you are further connected to the greatness of this lake. Here is the main thing. There is no TV and that was initially viewed as a detriment with 2 young children with a lot of energy. You would be amazed, but we never missed it for a minute. The location could not have been better as the spot on the dock was perfect and picturesque and the local restaurants and proximity to local amenities was ideal for filling in the remainder of your food and entertainment needs and. Grab some lunch or dinner at Ted's and breakfast at Miss Wakefield's on Rte. 16.

Owner's Response: Thank you Chris C., This is totally unexpected and very nice of you. You are correct, you can't beat our view and "best side" of the Lake. Dee & I have never requested these "reviews" but do appreciate this one, it being our 1st in over 25 years of renting out our two Mousam Lake cottages, very often to repeat guests. Repeaters generally make up about 50% of our weeks, and we seem to have a short list of those that have stayed with us sometimes 4, 5, to 6 years running. Presently we have a group, that sometimes uses both cottages, and they have been with us about 12+ years straight. I expect we'll be seeing you and Lisa again...hopefully, actually as owners/neighbors, but repeaters will be just fine. The TV? Aaaaaah, all in time. So far most to all guests appreciate NOT having cable as a way to generate quality time with the family, BUT Bruins and Red Sox games are an issue. Some choose to go to the local Sports "Club". We'll probably hook up cable this week....an option that has availed us only the last couple of years. Russ & Dee

Swimming, fishing, canoeing, trail walking, golf and biking. For those so inclined we have available a 16' LUND 25HP electric start, fishing/touring power boat for rent by the day or week. Some folks ask, 'dock?' Yes we have a dock for your boat if you are so inclined. There is also a country store w/gas on the lake shore making 'fill it up's' easy as well as the purchase of permits, supplies, groceries, liquor, and dinner. Although Mousam Lake is a 7 mile long, quiet serene lake, at least from Sunday PM to Friday afternoon, there is waterskiing/skerfing, tubing etc all week. It's sort of like quiet when you want/expect it to be quiet, but if you like action, expect 'popular', it'll fit that need as well on the lakes. We are 'halfway' between some of the best Factory Outlets of Freeport (LL Bean!) or Kittery, ME and North Conway, NH. By the way did you know L.L. Bean is open 24/7/365? You may find 'antiquing' inland to be more productive than doing it on the coast of ME.
