Well equipped, clean, away from it all villa.
We had a nice relaxing stay at Faja da Ovelha, despite not having very good weather. We seemed to pick a bad week, and spent more time in the house than around the pool. There was a lot of very low cloud all week which meant most of the time we couldn’t see the sea which wasn’t far below us. We had a big storm on the first day we were there which meant some rain got under the front door and we had rather a puddle, but it was extremely heavy rain. It was cool enough a couple of evenings to light the log fire which was lovely.
We travelled round most of the island sometimes to get away from the fog or low cloud. The road through a lot of tunnels is fairly quick into Funchal , but it is much more interesting to take some of the coastal roads which are very bendy and steep, and in our week there had quite a few land slip.
The house is on its own in a small village and about 15 mins from the main town Calheta, where most restaurants and the main supermarket are. The drive up to the house is very steep so you might need a good car to get up.
It was very comfortable, and very well equipped with everything you could possibly want in the kitchen. We were greeted by Emanuel when we arrived late on the Friday evening and he had provided everything we needed for breakfast and more the next morning, which was very kind. The house was very clean and Maria the cleaner called by a couple of times to see if we needed anything. I would recommend to anyone who likes to get away from it all, but you couldn’t stay here without a car.
Dear Guest, Thank you for such complimentary satisfying comments with the Villa high standards and all it's relaxing surrounding location amenities. Maria our housekeeper works very hard maintaining the Villa in a immaculate condition. As every guests needs and expectations are different when renting a Villa, in order to get more enjoyment from their holiday. Car hire is a must anywhere in Madeira as there is so much to explore throughout the island, reason why so many of our guests return as they are unable to pack it all in during their stay. Unfortunately you were in Madeira in a week with an unusual climate, it rained all week and I'm glad to know that you plan to return another time of year and with better weather. I wish you all the best
Beautiful location, very quiet, relaxing, lovely cottage but !!
Firstly the directions Id printed off( just in case no phone signal) were awful. We had to stop at Precipio restaurant which we knew from previous reviews wasn't too far away, they never heard of the road or house (found them to be a bit rude). So we continued our search till we came across it !!We found that if you go into the village and just follow the signs for the miradour (view) you will find the gates to the house. We were met by Maria who showed us all we needed to know. The house was clean and had everything you need. she said there were new mattresses on each of the 3 beds so we hoped to be comfy. It isn't until you live in the house that you begin to find fault with it.The mattresses were so hard the pillows terrible and the seating downstairs was very uncomfortable. The whole place inside needs a coat of white emulsion as there are stains on the walls from damp and squashed mozzies ! There are 3 showers only one has decent showerhead a very cheap replacement from a supermarket would do.
Such a shame the sun beds were so scruffy the mattresses were disgusting left out in the rain to hold water which has gone mouldy and smelly!.We didn't use the pool as it was cold.
We've given a four star as its a lovely area and house which with a bit of tlc could be 5.
We also suggest you stop off in Calheta on the way to pick up supplies as there isn't anything here and i'm afraid the Precipio didn't get a visit from us so cant comment and as reviewers mention you need to be steady on your feet the steep drive and steps up to the house are a challenge.
p.s a little bakery van called everyday near the gate around 4pm lovely fresh bread.
Thank you for your review. The criticisms pointed out will be taken into account in order to improve the conditions of the house. However I want to say that the house has excellent conditions for a good stay as it is stressed by more than 95% of the guests in their comments. The coordinates I feel to all the guests are strict. The beds mattresses are new. They were purchased last summer and have the following features: Quality certificate; Anatomical; Orthopedic; Viscoelastic Carbon Fiber; 3D Fabric; Without springs; 100% cotton; Undeformable Base; Ecological; Aloe Vera Treatment; Reinforced Coating; Electro Static; Electrobiological; Anti-allergic; Permanent Ventilation.
Pool mattresses and umbrellas are usually stored in the garage kept out of the weather. Guests have the control of the garage door. The house is painted inside every year in April and has been painted on the outside for about a year and a half.
I send The coordinates to more easily get the house to all the clients well in advance and are strict. It is important to get them printed.
Fabulous villa ... Fabulous Host!
The villa itself is incredibly spacious and don't let the fact that there are only two bedrooms put you off (one bedroom has two double beds and a cot!). The three showers rooms are well equipped with sink, shower & toilet in each. The lounge furnishings are great and the log fire amazing. The kitchen was very well equipped (in fact so well equipped little space for food). The pool was lovely but a bit cold...but hey we were in November so expected. The bbq hut was great and the fruit trees lovely. However I would respectfully suggest that the villa is not suitable for people with walking difficulties due to the number of steps ....
However this seems to be the norm for Madeira. Finally what can I say about Mr.Janes???? Absolutely perfect host (best we have ever encountered) he met us on arrival, put us totally at ease as he showed us around and was particularly informative. We did encounter a tiny problem at the villa but we called him and he had it fixed promptly. The lovely Maria (the cleaner) is also fabulous and does a pretty impressive job. Villa was spotless. Would highly recommend!
A comfortable, well equipped villa with the most amazing views!
Had a wonderful holiday in Madeira and the villa was great. It is well equipped with everything you need to spend time relaxing and enjoying your time without travelling too far. You do need a car just to go to the supermarket but there is so much to do and see in Madeira that a car is the best option here anyway.
A wonderful place to stay, with spectacular views!
Thank you very much for your great review, it is fantastic to know that you had a wonderful time at the Villa and enjoyed the luxury settings and memorable views it has to offer. We look forward to welcome you all in the future
Thebaida do Massapez a beautiful villa with amazing views
My partner & I stayed for a week in early September. Emanuel met us when we arrived late on the Friday evening and nothing was too much trouble to help us settle in. The villa was clean comfortable and beautifully situated with amazing views over the West Coast - and truly stunning sunsets.
I agree with previous comments - rent a medium sized car as the drive is steep and requires a strong clutch! To be honest you probably need a similar sized car to cope with the local hairpin bends anyway. If you're a nervous driver - then ask someone else to drive.
We drove around most of Western Madeira and had a couple of forays to the North coast where the climate was MUCH cooler. The whole island is full of amazing sub tropical plants - which I guess explains the " floating garden" description. I was fascinated by the geography & geology of the island - but most people I am sure would just be happy with the climate & views!
Make sure you visit the Bar Precipio which is the nearest watering hole. There is no menu - just fresh fish of the day with salad, but it had a view over Paul do Mar to die for and to be honest it was the best fish we ate in the holiday.
I cannot recommend the villa or region enough - it is truly beautiful. Daryl & Rob
Dear Guest, Thank you for such a fantastic review !! I am delighted that you found the Villa and Madeira superbly stunning. It is always a pleasure to read such rewarding comments
In relation to the rental car to choose. I always suggest a diesel car. Madeira is a wonderful island with its ingrained and well preserved roads, for those who are accustomed to flat roads, there is always a difference but not very much
The property is in a lovely position with great views it's situayion makes up for its remoteness
We loved the island and the property. It's old fashioned with lovely views and it's quite remote and very quiet. In a nice part of the island.
Thebaid of Massapez stands about 50 minutes from the aiport . It is well located because you can do wild sports , like Downhill Mountain Biking , Surf and also relaxing activities like fishing , levada walks and also the marinas.
