There is no option available in the web design to adequately describe our rental. If I had the option, I would describe it as a partial house. It is actually an apartment in the ground-floor level of our home. It is the only unit we have because my husband, Larry, and I live on the second story of the house. Since I use a wheelchair, I rarely go to the shore and my husband works five days per week. Consequently, the vast majority of the time our “little piece of heaven,” (as one guest called it), the gazebo and 200 feet of private shore frontage is entirely yours.
Ideally located right on the shore, our rental is fully furnished and ready to be your seaside home away from home. Drive right up to the boardwalk, unpack your bags, and you will have everything you need to sit back, relax, and enjoy spectacular sunsets. Walk just 75 steps to explore the private beach, swim, launch your kayak, watch for bald eagles, ospreys, loons, seals and dolphins.
Privacy: Experience life on the water in a natural, wooded environment. The lot is natural, secluded and private. You can just barely see our neighbors to the right through the trees, (a retired couple comes intermittently). There is a small log cabin to the left that is used off and on during the summer. It is usually so quiet you can hear the loons, sea gulls, palliated woodpeckers and owls right from your bed when the windows are open. If the breeze is up, you may also hear the lapping of the waves. You definitely hear the waves in the gazebo. If you read the comments on the web page, you will get our guests’ perspective of privacy.
If you are looking for romance, look no further. It is so romantic here that one couple became engaged at the water’s edge!
I am originally from Indiana. This area is so amazingly beautiful that I moved over 1200 miles away from home to relish its splendor. Larry, on the other hand, is a true "Downeaster." He grew up lobster fishing with his father and has spent many summers working on the trails in the park. He is a treasure trove of information in that regard, as well as "the best-kept secrets" of the area.
He and I are both educators. From the time we received our bachelor degrees, we have spent our entire careers working with and for children. (You could probably guess by our picture that we have one or two years of experience. Just how many, though, remains our secret.) In 1997 my career was cut short by an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis. The progression was very fast in the beginning, and my first wheelchair was prescribed before the first year was over. MS is a chronic illness and that's why we rarely go to the shore anymore. But if you have to have an illness, I can't think of a more beautiful place to do it! You are more than welcome to come share it with us. We are grateful to have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful and amazing people over the years.
Larry or Dawn purchased this house in 2001
I brought my family to the coast of Maine this past summer so we could hike around Acadia. This was the perfect place for us. It is only about a 20 minute drive to Acadia and it is removed from the crowds of Bar Harbor. In fact, we basically had our own private beach on the bay that is about 50 yards from the door. My teen boys enjoyed skipping stones and combing the beach for sea life and we all loved sitting around the campfire at night. The house provides a great view of the sunsets over the bay. Our hosts, Dawn and Larry, couldn't have been any nicer. The home was very clean and provided everything we needed. It was perfect for a family of 4. I would highly recommend this for anyone who plans to tour Acadia and Bar Harbor.
It has been a bit since we stayed with Dawn and Larry, but we really want to finally get our thanks to them on record! First, what a great pleasure meeting and talking with our hosts. Fabulous people, warm, open, hospitable, knowledgeable and engaging. Great accommodations with every amenity you could wish for...and super views. The sunset walks on the beach were fantastic. We loved it here, and we are embarrassed to announce that in four days, we cooked (and ate) over 10 lobsters. Acadia Park, with its great beauty and hikes, WOW! Our special favourite was the the hike up Acadia Trail. It was lots of fun scrambling through the rocks and the views of Some Harbour were so impressive. But all of the hikes were great, Great Head, Gotham Mountain, Wonderland, Ships Harbor.... We only wish we had more time to explore, but we were glad we did make it to Winter Harbour and Corea. What a beautiful part of the country. Thank you Dawn and Larry for making us feel so welcome. Best wishes for the two of you.
Dawn and Larry's home is the PERFECT getaway! It was spotless and well stocked. Linens are provided. What a perk! No extra laundry to drag home. The view is more beautiful than the pictures. We explored Acadia, Bar Harbor, local towns, and traveled down route 1 to the Pennobscot Narrows Bridge and Fort Knox (well worth the trip).
Even the chipmunks are friendly. One, nicknamed Brat, will take peanuts out of your hand! We will definitely stay at Sunset Retreat the next time we travel to Maine.

Wonderful peaceful location, right on the bay. We loved our stay here. The kitchen is well equipped, so we could always have a home cooked meal if we chose. And the location is close to all area attractions. We enjoyed hiking in Acadia National Park and all the sightseeing, as well as a multitude of great Maine lobsters! Our hosts, Dawn and Larry, were superb....very helpful and very welcoming. We would highly recommend this apartment.
With picture perfect sunsets and quiet peaceful place to enjoy; this is the place. Dawn and Larry are great hosts. There spice garden was great to cook with. There are many places to explore close by; Mt Desert Island and Acadia national park is just the start. It is a lovely place and hope to visit again soon.
Sunset Retreat is a Jewel! It's located on Blue Hill Bay, with a gazebo offering beautiful views of the water and sunset. The owners were always available and were very helpful with tips and suggestions about the area. Acadia National Park is a short drive away as are several delicious lobster pound restaurants.
The accommodations are simple but comfortable.
Sunset Retreat is a delightful place to spend a relaxing vacation.
