Romantic Oceanfront 15 Minutes From Acadia National Park's Visitor Center

Bedrooms 1
Space 550 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

200 feet of private oceanfront, gazebo, firepit, WiFi, HBO, included.

Come share our amazing home. The rental is an apartment in the ground-floor level. The main entrance to the house is in the front and the entrance to the apartment is on the back, (water), side of the house. Since our deck is recessed, it is unusual for us to see our guests. I use a wheelchair and rarely go to the shore. Larry works five days a week. Consequently, the vast majority of the time our “little piece of heaven,” (as one guest called it), the gazebo and 200 feet of private shore frontage are all entirely yours.

We are ideally located. It is only 7 miles to the park’s information Center. All areas of the park and harbor towns, (including Bar Harbor) are within a 30 minute drive. There are three lobster restaurants 10 minutes away and on your way back from the park.

The apartment is fully furnished. The pictures show two wicker chairs, but we replaced them last year with “comfy” new ones. The kitchen has full sized appliances. It is generously equipped with dishes, cookware and utensils. Unlike most owners, we provide all of the following: vegetable oil, olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic salt, coffee filters, saran wrap, and foil. We provide all linens, towels and paper products. It is our feeling that the less you have to bring the more enjoyable your stay will be. Walk just 75 steps to explore the private beach, swim, launch your kayak, watch bald eagles, ospreys, loons, seabirds, seals and even dolphins.

Our property is natural, secluded and private. Our driveway is more than 1/3 of a mile long. There is definitely no road noise. Prospects are very good were adding here and you just deal with her From your deck you can just barely see our neighbors to the right through the trees. The small log cabin to the left is hidden by fir trees and only used off and on during the summer. It is usually so quiet you can hear the loons, sea gulls, palliated woodpeckers and owls right from your bed when the windows are open. If the breeze is up, you may also hear the lapping of the waves. You definitely hear the waves in the gazebo as it is just feet from the shore. If you are looking for romance, look no further. It is so romantic here that one couple became engaged at the water’s edge!

About Larry or Dawn

I am originally from Indiana. This area is so amazingly beautiful that I moved over 1200 miles away from home to relish its splendor. Larry, on the other hand, is a true "Downeaster." He grew up lobster fishing with his father and has spent many summers working on the trails in the park. He is a treasure trove of information in that regard, as well as "the best-kept secrets" of the area.

He and I are both educators. From the time we received our bachelor degrees, we have spent our entire careers working with and for children. (You could probably guess by our picture that we have one or two years of experience. Just how many, though, remains our secret.) In 1997 my career was cut short by an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis. The progression was very fast in the beginning, and my first wheelchair was prescribed before the first year was over. MS is a chronic illness and that's why we rarely go to the shore anymore. But if you have to have an illness, I can't think of a more beautiful place to do it! You are more than welcome to come share it with us. We are grateful to have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful and amazing people over the years.

Larry or Dawn purchased this apartment in 2001

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

It has been a bit since we stayed with Dawn and Larry, but we really want to finally get our thanks to them on record! First, what a great pleasure meeting and talking with our hosts. Fabulous people, warm, open, hospitable, knowledgeable and engaging. Great accommodations with every amenity you could wish for...and super views. The sunset walks on the beach were fantastic. We loved it here, and we are embarrassed to announce that in four days, we cooked (and ate) over 10 lobsters. Acadia Park, with its great beauty and hikes, WOW! Our special favourite was the the hike up Acadia Trail. It was lots of fun scrambling through the rocks and the views of Some Harbour were so impressive. But all of the hikes were great, Great Head, Gotham Mountain, Wonderland, Ships Harbor.... We only wish we had more time to explore, but we were glad we did make it to Winter Harbour and Corea. What a beautiful part of the country. Thank you Dawn and Larry for making us feel so welcome. Best wishes for the two of you.

A Dream Come True

  • 5 of 5

I live in Maine and have always wondered what it would be like to live on the ocean with access to the park. Staying at the Sunset Retreat was my dream come true. The apartment was like having my own cozy little ocean-front cottage. It was so beautiful there that we spent several days just relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the property. The park was only 15 minutes away but we also took advantage of the Island Explorer which was very close by. Although we only saw our hosts once, Larry knew the park trails very well and marked easy hikes on a park map for us. They were absolutely gorgeous and perfect for our ability level. After a busy day, we often brought back fresh cooked lobster to eat at the shore while watching the sunset and enjoying a fire. It was absolutely amazing to fall asleep to the smell of fresh salt air while listening to the lapping of the waves and the call of the loons. I can’t recommend this rental highly enough.

Beautiful and Peaceful Waterfront Property with Views of Acadia National Park

  • 5 of 5

I just had to return to Sunset Retreat for a second visit this year. Fall (and any time really!) is the perfect time to enjoy the area with fewer tourists than in summer.

Dawn, Larry, and Kern are warm and amazing hosts and I consider Sunset Retreat my second home. We enjoyed an evening around a waterfront campfire eating s’mores and watching the sunset.

On this trip I wanted to challenge myself with more technical hikes in preparation for a trip to Nepal. I definitely achieved my goal! Acadia offers ALL levels of hiking and biking options. Once again, I met some amazing folks visiting the park as well friendly shop owners. I even had a bald eagle siting.

Although Bar Harbor is great, I urge anyone visiting to enjoy Southwest and Northeast Harbors as well. Despite having been to Acadia many times, there are always new trails to explore and new adventures to be had!

A Piece of Heaven & Homemade Blueberry Pie

  • 5 of 5

I knew by the pictures posted on this site that I would be satisfied with Sunset Retreat as our destination. However, checking in at dusk on our first day, as my husband and I drove down your long, winding driveway surrounded by the lush forest, I was CONVINCED that our choice was perfect!

The apartment was wonderful! It is roomy, comfortable, nicely decorated, and bigger than it looks in the pictures. Though I raised an eyebrow when I read the review about the small shower, my 6'2" big boy of a husband had no issues with the size of the shower in the spacious bathroom!

We loved sitting by the water. On our second night there as we relaxed on the shore, we saw a man approach nearby. We watched curiously as he launched a wooden rowboat and headed out to his lobster trap. He removed a lobster from the trap and rowed his dinner back to shore, something we have NEVER seen back in Texas!!

The location is close to many things you want to do in Maine. We visited Acadia National Park, went to Cadillac Mountain, and went on a boat tour, all a short drive away. We ate at The Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth three times in six days for their award winning clam chowder and homemade blueberry pie. You can't go wrong at that restaurant!

Overall, I am so pleased with our stay that I have already recommended the Sunset Retreat to others who would like to visit Maine.

Dawn and Larry, you have an absolutely beautiful place, so peaceful and picturesque, which was exactly what we needed! The peace and comfort of the Sunset Retreat was a welcome reprieve from Hurricane Harvey and his destruction back home in Texas.

During our time there, we were blessed in three ways: First, we saw some of Maine’s beauty; second, we learned that our cabin in Aransas Pass, Texas, though slightly damaged, survived Harvey; last, but certainly not least, WE MET YOU!”

Peaceful, Quiet Paradise--What a Great Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed four nights at this beautiful, peaceful property and wish we could have stayed for much longer on our first visit to Maine. The apartment was immaculately clean, fresh smelling and in good repair. All of the windows face the water so you have a constant view of the water. The setting is peaceful and oh so quiet! It was a welcome respite from the chaos and noise of New York City and Boston where we had spent the previous days prior to our arrival in Maine. We loved that Acadia National Park is only about a 25 minute drive away and grocery shopping is close, too (about a 15 minute drive), in nearby Ellsworth. We used the well-equipped kitchen to prepare several meals to eat in the gazebo near the water. There's a brand new BBQ next to the gazebo for guest use and we used it, too.

The directions to the property were accurate and easy to follow. Our hosts, Dawn and Larry, were gracious and ensured we had everything we needed. They live on the property upstairs but gave us all the privacy we desired. We were lucky and blessed to be able to spend some time with them and feel like we have new-found friends in New England.

If we could rate this property 10 stars, we would! We will definitely plan to stay here again. Thank you, Dawn and Larry, for providing such an exquisite setting and apartment for your guests!
