Semur-en-Auxois is a small welcoming fortress town in the Cote d'or, the heart of Burgundy. It sits on a rocky bluff, an extraordinarily beautiful town full of cobbled lanes, medieval gateways and ancient gardens cascading down to the River Armançon.
The inscription above the archway leading to the oldest part of the town was inscribed in 1552 and translates as 'The people of Semur take great pleasure in meeting strangers.' The people of Semur are just as welcoming today as they were the inscription was done all those years ago.
All roads lead to place Notre-Dame, a handsome square dominated by the large thirteenth-century church of Notre-Dame characterized by its huge entrance porch and the narrowness of its nave.
Further down the street in front of the church and off to the left you come to the four sturdy towers of Semur's once powerful castle, all that is left after the main walls of the fortress was dismantled in 1602. You can then explore the winding streets around the castle – there's scarcely a street in this lovely little town without some building of note – and then continue down to the delightful stretch of river between the Pont des Minimes and the Pont Joly, from where there's a dramatic view of the town.
Semur-en-Auxois is less than an hours drive from the beautiful and historical city Dijon, the capital city of Burgundy and from Beaune, famous for its wine and the enchanting Hospices de Beaune.
It is within easy reach of the auto route du Soleil (A6) and is only about 3 hours drive from Paris Charles de Gaulle
airport and the high-speed train (Eurostar/TGV) from London or Paris. .Then using SNCF you can travel from Paris to Montbard or Dijon. There are car hire facilities at Dijon Station e.g. National Alamo & Budget,
Parking - Parking 1 car only is provided in bay 4 at the back of the mill. Extra parking is on the street.
Parking - parking is provided for 1 car and must be used at all times - Bay 4 at the back of the mill. Additional parking is available on the street.

Why Anthea Smyth chose Semur-en-Auxois
When my wife asked me to do this it seemed simple. Then I realised where can I start? Well, I suppose, in 2004. We had been looking for a second home in France for some years without success. Then, almost by accident, my wife and our eldest daughter found Semur-en-Auxois. The town motto from the 16th Century is: “Les Semurois connaissent…..” Loosely translated it means the people of Semur enjoy meeting strangers. You find it under the Archway into the mediaeval centre. So what is magical about the town and the Aussois? The Mill was derelict. It required total restoration but even then we knew this was a piece of paradise. The road that steeply descends past the ramparts shows you a lot: the river Armancon, the abandoned (and now listed) tanneries, the medieval roofs and our Mill that took motive power from the river.

Relaxing stay in a great home in a charming town
Three couples shared this comfortable spacious contemporary home for a week. The open floor plan lets the group interact while allowing a corner or the balcony to be a personal space for reading or artwork. Beautiful art, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, really nice stemware, quiet, close to town yet secluded. Loved the sound of the river, millrace and the daily visit of the ducks. The neighbors in the complex were delightful. It was great having use of the bikes to pedal into town for fresh croissants in the morning and to ride along the Canal de Bourgogne a few kilometres away. There are lots of books, dvds and a TV if you can tear yourself away from the town of Semur-en-Auxois and nearby attractions. We enjoyed several restaurants in town as well as in Dijon and Beaune. Communication with with Anthea and David quick and easy. Safe off street parking is a plus. We have stayed in many rentals in France and the US and this is one of the best. Highly recommend.
Dear James & Nancy,
Thank you so much for your delightful appreciative response! It was very much appreciated by us.

Wonderful stay! Idyllic water sounds and medieval town environment.
A kitchen for cooking, complete with Global knives. Could use a microwave.
This flat is perfect - excellent location that is easily walkable to the town, wonderful views of the river and meadow, and equipped with everything you need, including laundry, iron & board, plenty of kitchen supplies, etc. There is a notebook that has all the information available, from wifi code to appliance operation to where to put the trash/recyclables. Very well done.
We are familiar with Semur, having stayed here before and we also have French friends who live here. The apartment was large and spacious so that we could easily have a few friends over for dinner, and with the quality of food sold in Semur, cooking was a delight. The kitchen is a good size and very well stocked. We brought a couple with us from the States, as well as our 18-year-old daughter, and there was plenty of room for all. Three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a WC on the main floor.
The medieval village itself is charming, with plenty of cafés and shops. The boucherie (butcher) is excellent, and walking up every day for a baguette at the boulangerie is a great way to get to know people & practice your French. There is a lot to do in the surrounding area, including Beaune (Hôtel Dieu, great restaurants, wine tasting), Abbaye de Fontenay, Château Bussy-Rabutin, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (candy factory & where the movie Chocolat was filmed), Avallon, the Morvan Park for kayaking and hiking, and many other sights.
It was too cool and rainy this year (abnormal) so we didn't get to use the pool, but it looked delightful and well-kept.
Thank you so much for your delightful and very comprehensive review.

Beautifully appointed, spacious apartment situated along L'Armacon river in one of the most picturesque villages in all of France.
There is nothing lacking in this apartment. The directions and instructions provided by the owners made our stay seamless.
This is a very peaceful corner of an amazing medieval village where we would occasionally encounter a few sports fisherman or some very friendly and helpful neighbours. The sheltered patio overlooks a mill race and rapids along meadow where we were regularly visited by a local gaggle of ducks.
There are many choices for an easy walk with spectacular views and a climb into the centre of town with some fine restaurants, patisseries, bars, etc.
We hope to return one day. I'm sure we will find it unchanged (as it was centuries ago)
Thank you, we are delighted to know that our guests have enjoyed their stay so much in our property and also the town of Semur-en-Auxois.

Watery peace and quiet at edge of lovely town
Stunning apartment located just 10 mins walk from the medieval film set location that is Semur en Auxois. Apartment underplays the size and space available here. Huge lounge, diner kitchen with tall beamed ceiling, a contemporary kitchen with every implement imaginable and a lovely balcony overlooking the water of the river and the original flow into the mill. The bedrooms are spacious and all with spotless well furnished en-suite bathrooms. the apartment is very much a home for home not a holiday rental. You quickly relax and feel away from it all but with much to rummage through on hand - from the artistic books and the art house DVD collection. There is a very nice pool on site - kept clean and tidy. And just a short walk along the river and up the steps is the town of Semur en Auxois, with all local amenities on hand - supermarkets, bakers, bars and restaurants. All in all a great escape but not too detached from the necessities.
A quacking good place to relax!
We spent a wonderful holiday at Apartment 4 Moulin Brazillier in late May. early June this year.. The apartment is spacious and very well equipped and beautifully light and airy. We particularly loved all the books and dipped into several whilst relaxing in the evening on the balcony overlooking the millpool. Anthea and David have created a stunning home and it was good to be able to share their pleasure in this lovely part of France.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for your kind words.

Welcome to our corner of Paradise, Semur-en-Auxois in the department of the Cote d'Or, Burgundy the region world famous for it's wonderful wines.
Moulin Brazillier is a sympathetically converted water mill and sits beneath the ramparts of a beautiful medieval town. Typical Burgundian restaurants and pubs are a short walk away. It boasts it's own shared swimming pool, 5 acres of secluded meadow and garden with its mill race running through. Our wing has a built in private terrace over looking the river, wildlife abounds.
Semur-en- Auxois, the historic capital of Auxois, has the charm of a medieval city with turrets and ramparts dating from 13th century. Legend says that Hercules built Semur at the time of his return to Spain. It is a 5 minute walk into the centre of the town where there are restaurants, delicatessens, shops, cafes and, most importantly, boulangeries for fresh croissants daily. For the energetic we provide bicycles!
Semur-en-Auxois is a small welcoming fortress town that sits on a rocky bluff, an extraordinarily beautiful town full of cobbled lanes, medieval gateways and ancient gardens cascading down to the river Armançon. There is a quaint old theatre, cinema, and museum featuring a library which has a fantastic collection of illuminated manuscripts and early printed books. There is an open air market in the centre on Sunday mornings. There are also tennis courts in the town and, further afield, a golf course at the Chateaux de Chailly (Pouilly-en-Auxois), 25 minutes by car. Wine and cheese are produced locally. This is the land of rolling countryside and canals, perfect for cycling and hiking.
Visit - Flavingy, where the film 'Chocolat' (author Joanne Harris) was filmed and starred Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. Beaune is a must for all wine lovers, visit the 'Hospice de Beaune' and travel along the 'Route de Vin' the vineyards are spectacular and especially interesting during the 'Vendage'. Chablis to the North is for world beating white wines. The Abbey of Fontenay, a former Cistercian abbey, is one of the oldest in Europe and a World Heritage site. Vézelay was a major medieval pilgrimage destination on the way to St Jacques de Compostella, the abbey claims to guard the relics of St. Mary Magdalen. Chateau Epoisses also famous for it's pungent and luscious cheese is only a short drive (or cycle) and there are numerous other interesting and fascinating chateaux nearby. Dijon, the capital, is essential to visit. The architecture is breathtaking, there are just so many beautiful buildings and old streets, follow the 'Owl Walk', and the market on Fridays is wonderful too. It is the friendliest provincial capital in France.
For Gourmands - Le Cheval Blanc, in Alise-Sainte-Reine, traditional and good and also not as heavy on the wallet as these! Restaurant Bernard Loiseau in Saulieu. Still evocative of three star chef ‘Bernard Loiseau’ is a 35 min drive but well worth the journey! Abbaye de la Bussière southwards has an exceptional restaurant in it’s cloisters. The abbey is surrounded by a lake and a botanical garden. The grounds! At these prices spend a day. Close by is Chateau Commarin and on the way visit one of the prettiest villages in the region, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. An evening in the local chateau listening to Ravel was magical and the restaurants are not expensive.
This is our home, furnished with paintings and antiques, we love it and hope you will too! For a quiet night or a day by the pool there are well stocked libraries of dvds and books.
