My family and I travel all over the world. When our bags are unpacked this is where we choose. Truly an enchanting place. This is the place to be if you are looking for a fantastic place to enjoy Mexico.
Shannon Poulsen purchased this villa in 2002
We chose just North of Sayulita for the Enchanting Location and the wonderful, friendly people, and surfing, surfing surfing! It really does not get any better than this!
Our kids prefer being in Mexico, and the villa over anywhere else.
When you are enjoying a stay in Villa Sonrisa, you will feel completely welcome and right at home. A very private, upscale yet back to nature adventure.
We searched high and low and when we found this place we fell in love!
We surf daily in uncrowded, consistant waves. Our kids love the friendly locals and the food is just too yummy!
Turtle season is enchanting, this place is like living the discovery channel!
Shannon... We just arrived home late last night after an awesome vacation at your home in platanitos! Lizeth prepared a great welcome dinner....arrived at 6ish. The house is amazing! Views extraordinaire ! Shopped at mega.... Beforehand.... Ate fish and fresh tortillas I bought from Saul at restaurants Ruiz ... Became friends. Excursions to see liberation of tortugas... Kayaked, bogged, hiked to the two beaches north.... Desolate....magical. San blas, sayulita, San pancho.... And so many memories in between! Games, ukelele( brought mine).....tequila, beer and Santa even showed up ! Soooo much close, family time!
Liseth was great , came most days, cooked twice..... We had good conversation. House was more than we expected.
We (a group of 6 friends) were the only ones around during most of the week we stayed at El Custudio in Villa Sonrista. It is BEAUTIFUL there. PARADISE. I plan to go back. OK, now for the minor negatives (the positives in the view and location outweighed the negatives). WIFI might as well not exist it is so slow or sporadic. The modem is new, the location is just so remote. I gave up trying to stream anything on my chromebook. Because it is all open indoor/outdoor living, after the midnight rains, the bity bugs come out, so bring the bug spray. We left with a bunch of chigger bites, but honestly, made me feel like a kid again back on the farm. The maid, Perla, is wonderful, stays out of the way and is constantly tidying up. The gardner is a sweetheart. If you aren't used to a house staff, it might at first feel unsettling but they are professionals. Walk or drive down to the little village of Platanitos and get to know the locals. On weekends, families come out and it is just such a great setting. The local fish and food are good at the restaurant with the "coca-cola" logo painted on it (under the hotel). As far as ElCustudios, the staff (Lorena and all) are helpful and wonderful and keep you supplied in some food and beverages - they kept a running total going for us and arranged for local fish to be brought to the house. Lorena also arranged for Albero to take us on an outing to an amazing hidden waterfall in El Cora. That was an amazing memory. If you stay at this place, do that outing!! Sonrista is amazing. We slept in the cabana and enjoyed the sound of the ocean every night. The villa dipping pool is nice, but we went to the community pool more often because of the amazing views. Like I said, most of the time, we were the only one in any of the villas. More people came after the middle of our stay and they were wonderful to visit with. If you go to see the turtles be released across the estuary, be sure to bring your money. We forgot and had to plan to return. The estuary isn't all that easy to cross if you are old, but there is a kyak for use. Others just waited for low tide and walked across. I will return here again. It is on my all time top 10 for great vacation spots. Shannon, if you EVER think of selling this place, CALL ME FIRST!!
My husband and I vacationed here with 2 other couples and had a great time- very relaxing. We enjoyed the beach and the estuary daily. Lizbeth was wonderful and we loved her meals- she had dinner ready and waiting for us every day except Sunday. Lance was very helpful to us as well. We took a couple excursions, one to San Blas and one to the waterfall but we liked being at the house best. The last 2 days in the lower room, Sunday and Monday, our friends had to take cold showers or use our shower and deal with a toilet that flushed unreliably because I guess no one was available at that point to fix it. We stayed 10 days which was just right or us. The views are gorgeous! So many sunrises and sunsets. The gate house store room was very convenient and we bought food, beer and tequila there. We also borrowed body boards and had fun boogie boarding in the afternoons. We all agreed that we would like to come again!
Absolutely gorgeous view. We plan to go back next year. We are a family with 5 children, always felt safe, swimming was great. Our stay was 12 days maybe longer next time. I am practically ready to move!!! Be prepared for the noseeums
This was our second time back to this very special place. The house was spiffy- recently repainted and restained and even more beautiful than we remembered. Plus the road to the town had been repaved making for an easier drive. The weather was perfect, the pools refreshing and clean, and the beach deserted as always.
The downside was that we had money missing at the end of the week. My family each had wallets stashed in our bedrooms hidden in various places, and when we went to pay Liseth at the end of the week nearly 400$ combined was missing. Not all the money, just some. All of our cameras and electronics were safe and we had not left the area once. I did report to the owner who will look into getting a safe installed, but this really put a damper on our visit.
The food this time was hit or miss- the guacamole is the best ever as is the chicken mole, however some nights we had some weird options- like instant mashed potatoes and ribs (not exactly fresh mex!) We brought a lot of food ourselves which is nice to have.
Also, on Saturday nights be prepared to listen to loud Mexican music- as lots of locals (we counted 50) camp across the estuary and party until wee hours. It was only one night, so not a big deal, but thought I would mention. Similar thing happened at last visit. Otherwise you have the area to yourself.
We spent a very enjoyable week at Casa Sonrisa. The villa is on a spectacular lot with views toward the estuary and the Pacific. We loved the style of the house and the fact that it was light, bright, and airy. Our three year old granddaughter was mesmerized by the variety of creatures that she was able to capture and view, both from the water and the grounds. Admittedly, her grandmother was less enchanted by the large number of animals but she adjusted...😏
Our housekeeper and cook, Lizeth, could not have been nicer or more helpful. Her meals were delicious and she kept the villa neat and tidy. It was hard to come home without her! In fact, I can't imagine a stay at Casa Sonrisa without Lizeth.
While our daughter, her partner, and granddaughter enjoyed the ocean every day, my husband and I were very content to laze by the pool. We met many other guests especially in the evening as everyone gathered to enjoy the gorgeous sunsets. People were visiting from all over the US, many like us, there for the first time.
We thought it would be challenging to be 'off the grid' for a week but actually found it quite refreshing to be unplugged. It was a perfect time to catch up on our reading and relaxing. My husband did manage to pick up internet at the guard house occasionally as he had some business to attend to but the rest of us were perfectly content to leave it be.
Shannon's directions were 'spot on' and made it possible to arrive without incident. We made one trip into town but were more than content to stay put and enjoy our surroundings the rest of the time. This is a magical place and well worth a visit!
This is a beautiful, nicely decorated home with a spectacular view. A lot of little touches make it feel very comfortable.
Very well equipped kitchen, unfortunately the housekeeper left previous guests food in the refrigerator which meant cleaning it out before unloading our groceries.
This is the perfect spot if you do not need to be connected, if you need Wi-Fi then this vacation home is not for you. Wi-Fi does not exist in the house and the service at the guard house is extremely slow and limited.
We had a few issues that I brought to Shannon the owners attention after we returned home and she has promised that these issue will be dealt with as it is not always easy to maintain a vacation property from a long distance.
We had no laundry, washer or dryer while we were there. Both were not working.
The built in BBQ is non functioning and if it was it was so filthy I would not use it. (apparently there was a new free standing BBQ purchased last fall that is no longer there) We resorted to using the oven but the pilot light did not work, after a little while we figured that the BBQ starter would get it going and it did.
If we were to return we would do the lunch and dinner meal plan as Lizeth is a very good cook and is very inexpensive Shopping is a long way south or north.
All towels, both bath and tea/dish towels were old and badly beat up, no hand towels for the bathrooms.
Woke up to no hot water the first morning. When Lizeth arrived the next day she showed us how to relight the water heater, simple thing to do but we did not know this.
Shannon needs to provide guests with a handbook/information brochure to explain the in's and out's of the house.
It is a beautiful spot with just an amazing view and if we could be guaranteed that the problems we encountered were fixed/resolved we would definitely return.
We are located on a beautiful quiet beach, which is also an official turtle reserve. During the nesting season you may visit the turtle research camp. Here you can experience the hatching and the release of these endangered animals. This is a truly memorable experience.
Perhaps you would like to enjoy fishing, whale watching, bird watching or even horseback riding on the beach? The possibilities of a new adventure are endless.
Our family's favorite days are busy with walking and exploring the little pueblas, surfing or hiking to a wonderful waterfall. Let your imagination run wild!
