La Vieille Ferme is a perfect place to relax and unwind. Located in the famous golden triangle of Sarlat, Les Eyzies and Montignac, these three delightful stone cottages (locally referred to as gîtes) nestle together in the heart of the beautiful, unspoilt region of the Dordogne known as the Perigord Noir. The cottages are situated around a charming courtyard with a covered terrace housing the old village bread oven (le vieux four).
Le Vieux Four is open plan with a fully fitted kitchen and spacious dining area. The comfortable lounge offers ample seating, wood burning stove, TV (English and French free view channels) and DVD player. The glass entrance door overlooks the courtyard and further French doors open on to a terraced seating area with views over the valley. Here you can enjoy the secluded garden and enclosed natural spring pond, an ideal spot to watch the comings and goings of numerous birds, butterflies and dragonflies that also inhabit this calm relaxing venue. A large barbecue offers the opportunity to dine outdoors enjoying a glass of local wine and watching the sun go down over the valley.
The cottage has three bedrooms and a large open plan living area giving views to the enclosed courtyard on one side and over the scenic valley to the other. The first double bedroom is on the ground floor with a window looking on to the courtyard. Open tread stairs lead to a further double bedroom and twin bedroom on the first floor. It has a large bathroom with shower and bath facilities and a separate WC on the ground floor and a further WC on the upper floor. Please note this cottage has an open tread stair case.
La Ferme has an open plan living/dining and kitchen area and three spacious, light and airy bedrooms. The downstairs is full of character with original stone walls and beams. There are two entrance doors, one leads to the covered barn area in the courtyard, housing the old village bread oven. The other opens onto a few stone steps leading up to La Ferme’s private terrace, equipped with barbecue, where meals can be enjoyed al-fresco overlooking the gardens. Please note that there is a third entrance door which leads to La Ferme’s separate parking area which is situated at the top of a short flight of stairs in an enclosed entrance hall.
Upstairs La Ferme offers a large double aspect double bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The bedroom has a dressing table and stool, two wardrobes and a king size bed with head and foot board. The ensuite is fully equipped with shower enclosure and WC. There are two further bedrooms, both twins, with hanging and drawer space. There is a second shower room also equipped with a glass shower enclosure and WC.
Outside, there is a mature secluded garden offering a variety of places to sit either in sun or shade and take in the views to the north and west. Each cottage has its own private garden terrace where meals can be enjoyed al-fresco. For our younger guests there is a communal indoor games room with table football, darts and a junior snooker/pool table. There is also a table tennis table and a selection of garden games such as badminton and boules for our more energetic guests. The English owners live on the opposite side of this country lane and are on hand to offer advice and help when necessary. Visitors are free to wander in the owners’ five acres of wooded grounds where they can meet (and feed!) the pet goats and chickens.
For those in search of outdoor pursuits bicycle hire, horse riding, and canoeing are all within easy reach. Along with the numerous local markets and many opportunities to taste the local specialties of foie gras, truffles and all things walnut (walnut cake, aperitif or just chocolate covered), La Vieille Ferme offers something for all ages and tastes.

About Sandra James
Coming from London to the Dordogne, Stephen and I were looking for a change of pace and definitely found it! We love the French attitude to life and were fortunate to settle in an area which is not only beautiful but where the locals have been extremely welcoming. We live opposite La Vieille Ferme (the old farmhouse) and thought we were really lucky to have such a pretty stone property as our view. We now thoroughly enjoy sharing La Vieille Ferme with the many guests who choose to stay here with us.
Sandra James purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Sandra James chose Saint-Geniès
You can’t help but fall in love with this area, it has everything - beautiful views, plush green fields, picturesque villages, an abundance of spectacular castles, all littered with wonderful restaurants cafés and bars. There is so much to see and do, we are always stumbling on new gems we didn't know existed. All this combined with a climate that means you can enjoy outdoor living for almost all of the year. The relaxed attitude and abundant sunshine means that you can be as busy or as active as you feel, spending your days reading a book in a quiet corner of the garden, lulled by the sound of bees humming, or equally taking a canoe down the river, a bike ride along the extensive ‘voie vertes’ or cantering along a woodland path, the choices are endless and wide. The ubiquitous caves and castles make the area a fascinating place to visit, traversing the centuries from prehistoric man to modern day. All this and fabulous food and wine to boot, what more could you want?
What makes this Cottage unique
La Vieile Ferme translates as the old farm and that is exactly what it was. We have three gites, Le Vieux Four, La Ferme and La Vieille Maison, all renovated from the original farm and barn, parts of which date back to the beginning of the 19th century. The original stone bread oven which served the whole village still stands today, attached to the open barn. Situated in a small hamlet overlooking the valley, we are very quiet and rural but within easy reach of all the major towns and tourist sites and well served by airports (Brive - 25 mins away, Bergerac and Limoges -1 hour and 20/30 mins). Montignac is our nearest town, being just 10 minutes away, and nestled on the banks of the river Vézère, it is one of the prettiest. It boasts very many cafés and restaurants and five boulangeries! 20 minutes away, just a few miles from the banks of the Dordogne, lies Sarlat, the largest concentration of medieval buildings in Europe, built in beautiful honey coloured stone that glows gold in the evening sun.

Notes
- The cottages provide a picturesque, peaceful, relaxing rural idyll. However, they are just a short drive from many historical sites, chateaux and beautiful gardens. La Vieille Ferme is just 10 minutes away from both Sarlat and Montignac Lascaux where there is an abundance of cafés and restaurants in stunning locations. The popular medieval town of Sarlat is a world heritage site, with the most registered classified buildings per square mile in Europe, with winding streets, summer festivals and a famous market. Montignac is a very pretty, small riverside town, home to the world renowned Lascaux caves. It offers canoe hire on the River Vézère, a Wednesday market and many riverside bars and restaurants where, along with Sarlat and the many ferme auberges between the two, the opportunities for tasting local produce are endless.

Location
La Vieille Ferme is situated between the medieval town of Sarlat and the picturesque riverside town of Montignac-Lascaux, home of the famous Lascaux Caves. For those interested in prehistory, just 24km N is Les Eyzies where you can visit the National Prehistory Museum, housing one of the world’s most complete collections of prehistoric artefact's, or the cave at Font de Gaume where some of the oldest (and original) cave painting in the world is still on display. Our prehistoric ancestors settled in the Vezere Valley more than 460,000 years ago and this area has an abundance of sites to explore. The region offers a vast choice of caves including the prehistoric decorated caves of the Vezere Valley. The Dordogne is also known for its many spectacular castles such as those of Beynac, Castelnaud, Commarque, Hautefort and Milandes to name just a few within a short drive away. From the belvedere at the cliff top gardens of Marqueyssac you can view the renowned ‘Valley of the five Chateaux’, looking out over the Dordogne valley for as far as the eye can see. La Ferme is one of three stone cottages, collectively known as La Vieille Ferme, located just 3 km from the stunning village of St Geniès, boasting a castle, an auberge restaurant, a twelfth century church, a fourteenth century chapel with original frescoes, a café and bar and the ubiquitous boulangerie. There is also a small village shop for all the essentials and a Sunday market for local produce. The cottages are just 12 km from Sarlat-la-Caneda, a world heritage site boasting the most registered classified buildings per square mile in Europe. With its winding streets, summer festivals and famous twice-weekly market, Sarlat also offers endless opportunities for tasting local produce at the many restaurants and ferme auberges. Just 8 km in the other direction lies the riverside town of Montignac, famous for its caves at Lascaux II. Here you can canoe on the River Vézère, browse the Wednesday market, and choose whether to enjoy a quiet coffee, a locally produced aperitif or to sample the authentic French menus at any one of the numerous riverside bars and restaurants. There is also a sandy beach within a 15 minute drive from La Ferme at Lake Tamnies and the world renowned wine regions of St Emilion and Bergerac are just over an hour’s drive, with Bordeaux under 3 hours away.
