'II Tramonto' (the sunset), a spacious and recently refurbished villa, set in its own private garden and olive grove in peaceful wooded surroundings, is the perfect choice for those who enjoy the countryside. It is situated about ten minutes drive from Casole D'Elsa in the Chianti area on the 'protected' hills of the Montagnola, with fabulous views towards San Gimignano and within easy reach of the famous cities of Siena and Florence. Only a few kilometres away there is a superb choice of restaurants, shops and bars. A special feature of this property is the beautiful interior decoration by the artist owner. Although generously accommodating up to 7, the villa is equally suitable for fewer and is frequently booked by 2 or 4 people.
About the area: In the holm oak and chestnut woods of the Montagnola with its abundance of wild flowers, birds and animals, including wild boar and deer, the expression 'away from it all' says it all.
Here, along the kilometres of the unspoilt mountain range that stretches west of Siena to the coast, walking, riding and cycling excursions become adventures to discover the ancient pathways to hamlets, chapels, castles and villas. From here, in every direction places of historic interest such as Siena, San Gimignano and the Abbey of San Galgano are easily reached.
How to get here, getting about and shopping: From the villa, Il Tramonto (The Sunset), the nearest airports are Pisa(1hr 45 mins), Florence(1hr) and Bologna(2hrs). Colle Val D'Elsa (20 mins) is the nearest town for shopping, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and bus services. Poggibonsi (25 mins) and Siena (30 mins) both offer excellent shopping, bus and train services. The nearest villages with bars, restaurants and shops are just 10 minutes away.
What to do: A great way to discover the Montagnola is on horseback, local stables 20 minutes. The hot springs (50 mins) are a must for their healing qualities. There is lovely river swimming just 25 minutes away and a day trip to the coast is definitely worthwhile.
Restaurants and local producers of wine, cheese and olive oil are dotted all over the area.
The owner, Jackie, designs and makes objects in metal and has a studio/showroom just 5 mins away. She can also arrange visits to the studios of other local artists and craftspeople. Living locally, she is usually available in the event of queries and will be happy to suggest places of interest to visit, depending on guests' preferences.

Marvelous farmhouse in the Tuscan countryside!
We stayed in this lovely farmhouse for a week with two other adult couples. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas (indoors and out) were nicely laid out, and spacious enough so that three couples could spread out happily. The house is not fancy, but it's tastefully decorated, nicely maintained, comfortable, and charming. The view over fields and olive trees was spectacular. Our proximity to lovely medieval walled towns (including Siena and San Gimignano) and hiking on the Via Francigena meant we never lacked for activity ... but equally appealing was the opportunity to sit on the porch and look out over the countryside. Jackie, daughter of the owners, oriented us to the house and the area, and was easily accessible for questions. The local restaurant (about a 10 minute drive) served delicious homemade pasta, grilled pork, antipasto and inexpensive wine that combined excellent, simply prepared food with a true Tuscan experience. Staying at the villa was a total pleasure. We recommend it without hesitation to those looking for a welcoming base to explore the Tuscan countryside!
A perfect getaway place
This villa was simply perfect for the type of vacation we were looking for. We wanted a place that was spacious yet cozy, serene yet close to main amneties. Il Tramonto was definitely it! We love the way the house was set up : the lovely kitchen and the big bedrooms. The artwork is very inspiring too. We spent every evening on the side terrasse watching the sun go down behind the trees in the olive grove. We made good use of the charcoal barbecue. The view is spectacular. Jackie the owner was very helpful and gave us the insider's scoop on the best places to go for markets and local food. We loved the fact that the villa is not too far from Siena, Florence, Pisa, the Chianti region and even the beach. We were quite happy to explore during the day and then enjoy the evenings in the villa. It gave us the perfect balance between exploring and resting. We highly recommend this villa for people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and who don't mind doing some driving into town for groceries etc. We would definitely recommend it for families as our two children (7 and 4) thouroughly enjoyed playing in the yard and counting the stars at night. The villa and the kindness of the owner made this leg of our summer vacation one that was restful and that we will never forget.
We welcomed this excellent review, endorsing the aspects of the property which appeal to so many, its location, spaciousness and views. It does indeed provide the "away from it all" feeling so many seek when on holiday, but with good access to Siena and the other cities and places of interest.
We would, however, clarify the expression "yard" for garden, as the garden with its olive trees,is large, surrounding the villa, and not what someone in the UK would call a yard!.
Road Trip Vacation Stop
5 of us (all adults) spent 3 nights at the Villa during our 11 day vacation/road trip around Italy.
Pro's: The villa was located in a beautiful spot with great views; Even though it was a little off the beaten path, we were able to visit Volterra, Siena, Montepulciano, Montalcino and a couple of other small towns during our stay without much difficulty. One couple even took the train to Florence for a day trip; The Villa was clean, spacious and comfortable (fireplace was really great and came in handy during the unexpected cool weather); Jackie was very helpful and gave us some great recommendations on the local sites.
Con's: Villa is located off the beaten path and a little hard to get to (Note: For our group, we kind of liked the fact that it out of the way but it may be an issue for some); Hot water heater was an issue for 5 adults trying to take showers (a tank less water heater system would be a good investment); Upon arrival, we noticed that there were only 2 rolls of toilet paper for 3 bathrooms, 1 roll of paper towels for the kitchen, no hand soap and a small amount of dish soap. When we asked, were told that we were expected to supply these items for ourselves. We did not think it was appropriate for us to be responsible for these basic items. We rented 3 different apartments during our visit to Italy and this one was the only one that did not supply these basic essentials.
Despite the few con's, our group really enjoyed our stay at the Villa. We had a great time in the area and we would give the Villa a good rating. Just know that if you are looking for a "Ritz Carlton" type place to stay, this place might not be what you are looking for.
We were pleased that over all the guests enjoyed their stay. At the outset of our information concerning the property , we advertise it as an "away from it all holiday",and the location as one of peace and tranquility. People looking for this type of vacation will find it meets these criteria and much else besides.. Potential guests are always advised of the distance from the main road.
Jackie, the owner, on arrival, asks guests to let her know if there are any problems, and is known for her prompt action. It is disappointing when "cons" are not mentioned until the end of the stay when it is too late to rectify matters.
We consider the villa is very good value, bearing in mind its spaciousness and the area of land it stands in. Guests regularly comment on the high quality of decoration and its cleanliness.
A Memorable Stay
Our family of 4 including 2 hard to impress teenagers, spent 5 nights at Il Tramonto before Christmas during the burst of severe and icy weather which left Northern Europe and Tuscany under several inches of snow, and the road up and down from the house, not readily passable without snow chains. However owner Jackie provided invaluable assistance, and of our 5 weeks of travel in Europe staying in some great places, our family all agrees that Il Tramonto was our most special and memorable place to stay.
The house is large, full of character and comfort, and most important given that it was –9 degrees outside at 10am one day – cosy for a winter stay. It was also clean and very well equipped. We spent many relaxing hours in front of a lovely open fire with a large stock of chopped wood just outside the door, and plenty of books and other materials available inside.
The position is magnificent, and the views and walks very lovely. Given the snow, we didn’t see as much of the area as planned, but had more time to enjoy the house, relax and build snowmen in the garden!
What a great place to stay!! The villa is exceptionally clean, beds are comfortable with professionally laundered linen ( why does it always feel so different?). Central heating keeps the villa really warm and the log fire (plenty of logs) is just the icing on the cake! Every window has a fantastic view including the loo!!!! Jackie the owner is very knowledgeable about the area and very helpful.
March is a great time to visit Tuscany - the tourists hadn't arrived - and we had no trouble parking at the main attractions. Hope we go back again.
Our Dream Holiday
Our stay at 'Il Tramonto' was truely a dream holiday, with its indescribible views and overwhelming sense of mystery and romance, its beautiful, vivid sunsets and wonderfully cool mornings and evenings.
The drive up is a great daily experience with an abundance of wildlife and views. We found the house a great base to begin wonderful journeys from, and 'what a relief' to come back to its cool tranquility after the heat of the day. It has everything needed for a really superb holiday and we left with heavy hearts and the distinct feeling that in not actually spending whole days relaxing in such lovely surroundings, we had missed a beautiful alternative dimension.
Italy has always been a wonderful experience for us and we look forward to returning again and again.
