The Bad News: In August, 2017, guests accidentally set the house on fire.*
The Good News: The house has been completely renovated for the 2018 season! New floors, new walls, new ceilings, new kitchen cabinets and appliances, new furniture—all new! [Please note: the renovation is currently underway, so all photos are of the old interior.]
The house is located on the Shore Road between the Hinckley and Manset Town docks in Southwest Harbor on the Quietside of Mount Desert Island, with convenient access to Acadia National Park, hiking, biking, kayaking, the free island shuttle bus and all MDI attractions
Perched atop a former warehouse, it is surrounded by a huge deck, and affords spectacular views of Southwest Harbor and the mountains of Acadia National Park.
The open kitchen/dining/living room area features picture windows and a massive hearth of local stone..
Things to do: Visit Acadia National Park: Hike the trails, bike the carriage roads, swim or fish or boat in the lakes, enjoy Park programs such as ranger-led nature hikes, watch the wildlife, or relax at the beach - this is one of the most spectacular Parks in the National Park System.
The hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor is a short drive across the Island, where you can enjoy an amazing variety of tourist activities appealing to any taste or budget.
Finally (this is our personal favorite), you can simply relax at home. Send the kids down to fish or out to play in the yard. Sit back on our deck and enjoy the view. Watch the boats in the harbor, enjoy the play of light on the mountains of the Park or the islands offshore, see if you can spot a bald eagle soar overhead, and let yourself unwind.
What's this about a warehouse?: Our house was once a commercial property. It was, at various times, a boat-builder's shop and a lobster pound. There are two large warehouse bays in which we store cars and boats (big boats!) in the winter, and our house is built over one of the bays. However, it is no longer used commercially.

About Carlisle Landel
I'm a research scientist, more specifically, a genetic engineer, who came to MDI to work at the world-famous Jackson Laboratory. I currently reside in California, where I work for a biotech company and also care for my aging parents. Besides my professional activities, I'm a musician (I play both French horn and blues harmonica), a photographer, and an outdoorsman. I kayak (whitewater, touring and ocean surf), hike, camp, ski and fish. I love to travel.
Carlisle Landel purchased this House in 2001
Why Carlisle Landel chose Southwest Harbor
It was the view from the house that first captivated me as soon as I walked in the door for the first time, as I'm sure it will do to you, too. This house will always be my home–it was the first house for myself and my beloved wife (who passed away after losing her fight with breast cancer in 2014), and its tranquility brings me back as often as possible. It will be the place to which I'll retire after a few more years.
What makes this House unique
Sit on the deck, relax, recharge, and rejuvenate while you enjoy the view. Then go out and enjoy all the benefits of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park from this hide-away on the Quiteside of MDI. Repeat as needed.

We just had a wonderful Labor day weekend at this
house with our friends. It is very neat and extremely
spacious. We even watched the firework accross the
harbor in the living room. Highly recommend for
vacation with families and friends.
Nice quiet spot, good location
We definitely enjoyed our stay! It was in a good spot on the island, and a great view of the harbor. It was a great place to stay for our group.
Cannot think of anything positive to say
VBRO assumes that homeowners are renting you a decent, clean and working home. This was not true for this place. Previous visitors called this place dated. They did not mention filthy scraps of carpet and smelly throw rugs throughout, 30 year old dirty wall to wall carpet (don't go barefoot!!), dishwasher does not work, coffee maker broken, mold in smelly master bath visible around sink, broken sofa and breaking bed, rusted out grill, and old sheets and fabric scraps covering sofa and coffee table. I am so sorry that I paid for this and had to have my family stay here. We loved Maine but this was so not worth any price. It was embarassing to ask my family to stay here.
excellent location, view, vacation overall, but property really needs an upgrade
Enjoyed our trip to this section of the Maine coast. Excellent location & gorgeous neighborhood. Beautiful view from the deck and living room picture windows. However, the apartment sorely needs work. This could be a terrific rental given the view and location, but the place really needs investment.
My family had a wonderful time. We were in a quiet place with beautiful views but close to town.
The property was spacious. The owner was incredible responsive. Our view from the balcony was breathtaking and we spent a lot of time eating and enjoying happy hour on the balcony. I highly recommend.
Very pleasant July 4th vacation
We had a very pleasant time at the house during the July 4th week. We arrived very late at night. It's nice the owner left lights on the deck and front of the driveway. We were impressed right away by the beautiful veiw from the deck, starry sky, the quiet harbor, and scent of beach roses
The house is clean and full of space. It locates at the quiet side of Acadia yet is close to everything.
The owner Carlisle came the next morning. He was very friendly and gave us tons of tips on where to go and what to do. It was our first trip, so that was very helpful.
One bonus is that we got to watch the July 4th fireworks right at the deck.
We all had a great time and would recommend this place to our friends.
Our house is located on the Manset Shore, in the town of Southwest Harbor on the 'Quietside' of Mt. Desert Island. The town dock is just yards from our driveway, and there you can board the free Island Explorer shuttle bus that serves the entire Island, catch a ferry to the Cranberry Islands, or fish for mackerel (we provide fishing poles). You can launch your kayak at the foot of the driveway, or search for sea glass or shells at low tide. The Manset Shore is a working waterfront, with the Hinckley Yacht Service yards a few blocks away, and you can observe the activities first-hand. There are several restaurants within a few blocks of the house. The town of Southwest Harbor is less than 2 miles away, with restaurants, shops, museums, kayak and bicycle and boat rentals, churches, a drug store, banks, and a post office, Acadia National Park is just minutes away, with its mountains, shoreline and lakes.
Other Activities: kayaking, whale watching, hiking
