The cottage is ideal for small families and couples with bath/shower facilities on each floor of accommodation. The cottage was rated 4 stars by Visit Britain last year so is well equipped especially in the kitchen.

It was advertised as a "Cosy Cottage" and it certainly was!!!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed out stay at Lavender Cottage. Lyme Regis has a lot to offer all ages. The cottage had everything we want for our week's stay. It was very nice to have the two en-suites and both bedrooms were very nicely fitted out. The beds in each room were very comfortable. Being senior citizens we made the most of travelling along the coast on the buses so we were able to park the car up for the whole week. We enjoyed several meals out in the different pubs but also enjoyed eating in as the kitchen had everything we needed.

I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and would have no problem in returning to Lavender Cottage. Also the owner "Mark" was very responsive to any questions we had.

Lovely cottage, lovely town, lovely three days at the quietest time of the year. Bliss. AND Tierra Kitchen served us perfect food.

Comfortable cottage in centre of town

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was as described and very central. It was fairly clean but not spotless on arrival. We had a few settling-in problems - the parking ticket we ordered was not there, the gas fire was out of action, we had only one key. Mark, the landlord was helpful in resolving these issues.

Our main gripe is that the instruction folder was seriously inadequate. There were two contradictory instructions on the rubbish bins, both of which were out of date! The dishwasher handbook referred to a different machine. There were no instructions for the TV/recorder DVD player.

Overall the cottage met, but did not exceed our expectations!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and highlighting the issues with our documentation. I've replaced the gas fire with an electric one and I'll update the rubbish collection information along with the dishwasher and TV/DVD.

Comfortable little cottage

  • 4 of 5

Generally I thought the house and the facilities were very good. The kitchen and the two bathrooms were scrupulously clean, and the sitting room , although a little tired looking, was cosy and comfortable. Plenty of piping hot water which is always welcome, and a good head of shower in the one bathroom.

The garden however, was not quite how it was displayed in the photographs and appeared rather neglected with brambles and weeds rather blocking ones path. Also the previous incumbents had not cleaned up their dogs poo, and so my little puppy managed to get it all on her feet and stuck to her fur, as they were very large portions and difficult to avoid. In the end I got my own poo bags and cleared them up as well as my own dogs, which I shouldn't have had to do. I think it might have helped to ask clients to clean up "outside" as well as inside before they leave and put the request in the information folder.

Apart for that we loved being in the town and Lyme Regis generally, and would definitely come back and stay here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting us know about the garden and dog poo. This is the first time we've had any dog poo not cleaned up by owners. We'll definitely put a note in the welcome folder and ask cleaners to check the garden. Also, I'll ask our gardener to give the garden a good cut back.

Very good - everything one needs

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic location, ideally situated for beach, seafront and everything else. Cottage had everything we needed and was clean and cosy. Everything worked well. Minor gripe - shower cubicle a bit too cosy, to be honest. But overall absolutely superb accommodation which we'd certainly book again. We loved it.

comfortable, great location

  • 4 of 5

Had a great weekend, used supplied parking permit to park at top of hill only minutes away, where we left car for whole weekend, exploring Lyme Regis and surroundings on foot. Riverside walk well worth doing but round walk to Uplyme and back via Ware cliff stunning but longer climb and time than expected! Town Mill Bakery for breakfast, excellent, fish and chips from Lyme Regis chip shop on beach, excellent. Mill Restaurant good for Sunday lunch and Mark Hix great treat!

Cottage was comfortable and had everything we needed though more mugs would have been useful. Garden furniture missing which was a shame as garden is lovely suntrap. Some parts of cottage need a bit of tlc but this did not detract from our enjoyment of a lovely weekend. We would come again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review and sorry about the garden furniture. The old furniture was falling apart, so my gardener removed it but unfortunately, I didn't have time to replace. We've got a new set now, so hopefully you can come again and enjoy the suntrap garden with new furniture! More mugs also on order and painting in progress. Mark

Lyme Regis
Car: not necessary

Easily accessible, and only three hours from London and the Midlands, Lyme Regis is away from it all, nestling in the unspoilt West Dorset countryside. Part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, and surrounded by areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lyme Regis, the “Pearl of Dorset”, is famous for its fossils, its historic old town, its Cobb and its beaches. And now it's a destination for food lovers, with Hix Oyster and Fish House in the town, and River Cottage HQ and Axminster Canteen both close by.

The old town, dating back to the 14th century, is an ideal place to walk and explore the local shops, art galleries, newly replanted gardens with myriad places to stop to eat and drink. Built around the River Lym, Lyme has its own working Water Mill, recently refurbished to include an electricity generator. Lyme Regis is very special in that it is probably the smallest town in the country to boast its own cinema, theatre, and museum.

The Cobb attracts visitors – not just for its visual splendour and its magnificent naval architecture, but also for its connections with great literature. Indeed, people come from all over the world to see the steps where Louisa Musgrove fell in Jane Austen’s Persuasion; or to see where Meryl Streep stood, looking forlornly out to sea, in the film adaptation of John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman. And art lovers are drawn to Lyme for both its beautiful scenery and for its wide range of art galleries.

Holiday makers will enjoy a family-friendly, sandy beach and an often-surprising micro-climate in the shelter of Lyme Bay. Marine Parade is a great place to walk, sit, enjoy the views and visit its small shops and eating places. Here the seafront facilities will soon benefit from restoration of the Marine Parade Shelters, ready for summer 2011. The town and surrounding area have many attractions and host a range of family-centred events, including a Jazz Festival, a Fossil Festival, Life Boat Week and a Regatta & Carnival Week.

For visitors who have had enough of the hurly-burly, and need to escape, there are many delightful places to stay to suit all budgets. You will be able to enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside and there are many opportunities to go out on a boat to view the glorious coastline from the sea or to fish in the clear waters of Lyme Bay.
