Overview

About the property

2 bedroom cottage sleeping 4 people each room with its own bath/shower room.

Lavender Cottage is available for weekly self catering stays and short breaks outside school holidays. The cottage is ideal for small families and couples with bath/shower facilities on each floor of accommodation. The cottage was rated 4 stars by Visit Britain last year so is well equipped especially in the kitchen.

There's lots to do in Lyme Regis being in the middle of the Jurassic Coast between Charmouth and Seaton. Plenty of walking by the sea or countryside inland. Many restaurants including Mark Hix's Fish & Oyster Restaurant and Hugh Fernley Whittingstall's River Cottage Canteen in Axminster

Very disappointed

  • 3 of 5

Lavender Cottage is in a fantastic location and has potential to be a lovely holiday home. It was clean, has everything you need but is a bit shabby and in need of modernisation. The newly refurbished kitchen is lovely but both bathrooms need attention and the sitting room is an assortment of mismatched furniture and not very comfortable. The shower cubicle was grotty, one of the doors was hanging off and the shower was running water all the time. It could not be switched off and was not pleasant to shower in. When we arrived we could not stop to unload the car where advised, since the area had been chained off and padlocked. The access code we were given was incorrect so we could not get into the cottage. The towels we paid extra for were not there - all minor points maybe, but add up to a disappointing first impression. Add to that the British weather which was not kind, resulted in us giving up and leaving after 2 nights!

Owner's Response: I'm sorry about your experience of staying at Lavender Cottage did not live up to your expectation and the weather being bad didn't help I'm sure. I'm not sure why the code didn't work as the one given was correct? Sometimes the dials of the key safe need moving slightly backwards and forwards to align perfectly for it to open. Towels were delivered a few hours after arrival due to a problem with instructions to the cleaners. We have had a leak in the shower tray which was fixed and redecorated but was further exacerbated by the new problem of running water and doors hanging off. We arranged for a plumber to visit as soon as possible. He had to order a new shower cartridge to stop the running water and runners for the shower door. Both these issues faults have now been repaired and when we have gaps in bookings we will redecorate the room. For future guests, a word about parking. Coombe St is a one lane road making it difficult to stop and often involves giving way or reversing if vehicles are coming the other way. However, there are two places you can unload where the road widens enough for you to pull up and allow enough room for others to pass. The easiest is outside Bethany Chapel, which sometimes has a chain to prevent cars parking on their land. However, even with the chain there's enough room to pull up on the double yellows which allow you 10 minutes or so to unload. The other section of road that widens enough is opposite the Old Lyme Guest House. Our sofa and chairs are mismatched as shown in the photos we publish. That is intentional on our part and hopefully makes the cottage feel cosy and not too fussy or perfect! Many thanks, Mark

Lovely cottage close to beach

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage - cosy, clean and well equipped. Great to have back garden and two bathrooms. Best thing is the location - close to the beach, the mill (excellent cafe) and fossil/dinosaur museum.

We had a great week in the cottage.

Everything in the cottage was warm and cosy, comfortable beds, powerful shower which was a bonus after swimming in the sea in April !

Lyme Regis
Car: not necessary

Easily accessible, and only three hours from London and the Midlands, Lyme Regis is away from it all, nestling in the unspoilt West Dorset countryside. Part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, and surrounded by areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lyme Regis, the “Pearl of Dorset”, is famous for its fossils, its historic old town, its Cobb and its beaches. And now it's a destination for food lovers, with Hix Oyster and Fish House in the town, and River Cottage HQ and Axminster Canteen both close by.

The old town, dating back to the 14th century, is an ideal place to walk and explore the local shops, art galleries, newly replanted gardens with myriad places to stop to eat and drink. Built around the River Lym, Lyme has its own working Water Mill, recently refurbished to include an electricity generator. Lyme Regis is very special in that it is probably the smallest town in the country to boast its own cinema, theatre, and museum.

The Cobb attracts visitors – not just for its visual splendour and its magnificent naval architecture, but also for its connections with great literature. Indeed, people come from all over the world to see the steps where Louisa Musgrove fell in Jane Austen’s Persuasion; or to see where Meryl Streep stood, looking forlornly out to sea, in the film adaptation of John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman. And art lovers are drawn to Lyme for both its beautiful scenery and for its wide range of art galleries.

Holiday makers will enjoy a family-friendly, sandy beach and an often-surprising micro-climate in the shelter of Lyme Bay. Marine Parade is a great place to walk, sit, enjoy the views and visit its small shops and eating places. Here the seafront facilities will soon benefit from restoration of the Marine Parade Shelters, ready for summer 2011. The town and surrounding area have many attractions and host a range of family-centred events, including a Jazz Festival, a Fossil Festival, Life Boat Week and a Regatta & Carnival Week.

For visitors who have had enough of the hurly-burly, and need to escape, there are many delightful places to stay to suit all budgets. You will be able to enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside and there are many opportunities to go out on a boat to view the glorious coastline from the sea or to fish in the clear waters of Lyme Bay.
