Our home, the last house on a point of land, has been our peaceful summer retreat since 1986. Decks on both sides afford both an east and west view of the water. The rocky shoreline has a few sandy places for sunbathing and swimming depending on the changing of the tide. We enjoy harbor seals, blue herons, osprey, geese, gulls, and we've even seen bald eagles!
The interior has a comfortable, open floor plan downstairs with full bath and laundry. There are four bright, cozy bedrooms and a full bath upstairs. Two of the bedrooms open directly onto the balcony which makes it possible to lie abed and view the water beyond.
In addition to the usual amenities, we leave the kitchen stocked with spices, condiments, baking ingredients, and canned goods with the understanding that whomever uses the last of anything replaces it for incoming guests. There is wireless internet and basic cable.
Our best recommendation is that folks keep coming back. Check out our guest reviews!
We have bought and renovated many houses over our life time. We love the work and we love to work together. Our kids have helped us out too. There is very little that is original in this house now.
Mark and Carol Peterson purchased this house in 1986
We had been looking for a summer home on the Maine Coast for ten years. When we saw this property we bought it in our hearts before we'd seen the inside. The location was exactly what we were looking for. The inside needed a complete renovation and there was no second floor. So we tackled the first floor: down to the studs, new insulation, wiring, plumbing, and heating. Then we raised the roof on the second floor to make room for another bathroom and four cozy bed rooms. We also had to install a new septic system, underground cable for the house, new decks, new windows, new water pump... you name it and it has been done to our home.
Coincidental with this is that we took our children to stay on a little island which we can see from this location. Bustin's Island was a wonderful series of summers and when they return each summer (now as adults with their own children) we journey out to there to see where we spent many pleasant times as a young family.
Being the last house on a point is indeed a unique feature. It's also possible that during the full moon or the new moon, the causeway we drive across covers with a few inches to a 18 inches of water at high tide. Then we're an island for ten minutes to two hours. It depends on the height of the tide.
In addition, the tidal changes also bring a very dynamic wild life to our area. Great Blue Herons come and go with the tides as do geese, ducks, ospreys, and even striped bass. Our grandson caught a 22" one off the beach in front of our deck.
British Guests wrote the following unsolicited note to us...
"WE have just returned from a holiday in the USA with our daughter and her family and were fortunate to spend a week in your home.
"This is really to thank you for providing such a well equipped rental home in an idyllic setting. We appreciated the effort you made to present your home with such complete provisioning was far beyond what would be found in most holiday homes.
"In the past 20 years or so we have spent many happy holidays in excellent accommodations but must say that your home has been best of all."
Thea is different from all other rentals we have known. When you are there it feels like you are the luckiest people in the world to know the folks who own this place and call it their home. It feels like your home, too, as everything you could want to relax in comfort is there. At the same time, it takes you far away from your usual world, as Thea is perched on a tiny island at the edge of the sea! How fabulous to see ithe ocean all around you, all the time, out of every window, and to hear it lull you to sleep at night. We have been especially appreciative of the detailed guidebooks the owner's provde to answer every question you may have about the house and the many attractions in the vicinity. Every time we go back, the owners have added amenities and renovations - this time, WiFi and cable access for computers, new gas heating system, and an additional patio on the front so you can enjoy contemplating the sea from yet another direction! We've had great dinners with friends around the big table and quiet days of solitude, tourist days up and down the coast and quiet nights by the fireplace; canoeing around the islands and walking around the point. The creativity Flying Point Island inspires has been awesome: we write, we play instruments, we take photographs; we laugh, we sing, we dance. Bliss.
Girls weekend away. My friends and I loved our time at Thea. A beautiful home with incredible views from every window of Casco Bay. We loved how peaceful it was and how comfortable we felt at Thea. A wonderful place to get away and enjoy nature at its best. Mark and Carol were very responsive to questions, which was appreciated. Thank you Mark and Carol for sharing your home with us. We loved it!
“Home Away” is exactly the right description of Thea, the house we have rented for the past five years at the far reaches of Freeport, Maine. Casual, comfortable, private, fully stocked, it demands little more than that its occupants enjoy their stay. As the last house on a peninsula jutting into Casco Bay, it also offers much more than a house: water views from every window; a lovely, cooling breeze; tides lapping at the rocky shore; and wildlife enough to keep nature lovers happy—harbor seals, horseshoe crabs, wildflowers, ospreys, terns, cormorants, and other waterfowl aplenty. Even a porcupine, which ambles by to spend the day in the woods between the house and the point! Although the owners succeed in providing the amenities of home for a satisfying vacation experience for their tenants, it can also be said that the very location of Thea alone goes far in doing that.
Having said all that, we do hope our praise does not send vacationers flocking to the house, for we would miss our opportunity to return.
My family absolutely loved this house. It is in a great location. The pictures couldn't do this place a justice. We were lucky to see amazing sunset for the three days we stayed. Thea has an amazing deck which leads to the waters. The neighbors are awesome and it's a very peaceful area. The kitchen was fully equipped with all the utensils we needed and the bedrooms. To add to the great scenic location, Thea is very close to downtown Freeport. We would definitely book Thea again in the future. Other than that the owners are very communicative and readily available. Instructions about the house are very clear.
We had a wonderful week at Thea. The house, its location and its surrounding is absolutely fabulous. Although there is lots to see around Freeport, we mostly stayed on the "little " island and enjoyed being there and relaxed. We are a big family with 5 kids, but Thea offers so much space that we always felt very comfortable. If we have the chance, we will always like to return.
As a bookgroup of 5 women who have met for 25 years, but who are now scattered throughout New England, we have decided on a yearly retreat. Luckily we found Thea this year and had a wonderful stay. Maine provided its usual mix of weather, fog, drizzle, and some dazzling sunshine and the views fro the deck were splendid in all of them. This is a well furnished retreat for a large group with everything you could ask for and clear directions (if you read the information book, as we should have done initially) on using all services and resources. We left the point to hike on local farms and went to Portland for the rainy afternoon, but wished we had longer just to enjoy the peace and beauty of the house. This is a wonderful opportunity. Close to Portland, Freeport shopping (home of LLBean), Bowdoin College, museums in Bath and Brunswick, and many state parks and beaches. Our home, almost surrounded by water and at the high tides with the new moon and the full moon, briefly becomes an island. Under most circumstances this does not impact your visit. Once in a while though you have to use our tide charts to plan when you will leave or return.
