Casa Castegneti is a villa sitting on a hill just outside Castelnuovo Belbo, between Asti and Alessandria near to Nizza Monferrato.
The villa is South facing, looking over rolling hills of vines and woodland. About 10kms away, towards Aqui Terme is the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, a beautiful ‘cathedral like’ church which is lit up in the evening and enhances the panoramic views.
The local area was two years ago listed as a UNESCO World Heritage region, renowned for the famous wines produced, and traditional culture. There are many wine tours available, either on bike, in organised tours, or design your own tour in the car. Indeed the vines just below the villa are owned and run by Roberto Eschueller who grows, harvests and produces his own wine on site. Very high quality reds, and the areas best sparkling Cortese (in my view).
In the woods around the property there are many fine walks with views over the countryside, and to the North, on a clear day, views to the Alps. The area has many boar, deer and other wildlife. The area is a fantastic cycling area, with quiet roads through villages.
Alessandria to the East, is a famous old Roman Citadel, with many old architectural features from this era. Asti, to the West, is famous for its wine and horse race through the centre of the town. It is a very attractive and lively town, with the areas best market, every Saturday.
Aqui Terme, another Roman town is the cultural centre of the area. Great theatres, open air performances throughout Summer, excellent restaurants, but also good Trattorias, the best swimming pool for hundreds of kilometres, and steeped in Roman history. Each small or large village in the area is justifiably proud of their own heritage and have their own unique features, waiting to be explored and discovered.
The whole area around Nizza Monferrato is experiencing a surge in interest and visitors, keen to explore the wines being produced, but equally to enjoy the unspoilt countryside.
