Only 30 minutes drive north of Puerto Vallarta Airport is a beautiful and quaint fishing village of Sayulita, surrounded by green hills and white beaches. A place for many kind of relaxing vacation. The house 'Casa Mar y Montana' was built in 1999 and extended/upgraded since than. It is overlooking the ocean, mountains and the quaint fishing village of Sayulita. It features 2 individually decorated charming studios with king-size beds, a lounging area and private bathrooms. We stayed for a week and had such a great time! The property is pretty big with a BEAUTIFUL patio/garden area. We would make coffee every morning and just sit outside and watch all of the interesting birds & squirrels. Our favorite place was the upstairs open area where there is a little bed, table & hammock with a bookshelf. Most afternoons we were there, getting out of the sun, reading, eating papaya and looking at the ocean

Hans & Susanne have a wonderful casa on the hill overlooking the town, the jungle & the ocean. I had a wonderful, peaceful stay here with no issues sharing the kitchen. It is a large home with ample space to enjoy. 5-10 min walk to the beach or town but lovely and peaceful at night. Very nice use of space with lots of outdoor nooks to enjoy. Thanks for the wonderful stay!

“Loved the detail in the landscaping and all the views. Glad we had the room by the kitchen, it might have been harder being in the other room.”

.........My wife and I stayed in the "Verde" room for 7 days. Our room was cozy and exactly how it was described in the listing. The grounds were beautiful and lush with tropical trees and plants. The property is a duplex. Which for 6 of our days of our trip we were the only ones staying there. Which was great the property wa

My husband, 4 year old and I spent a whole month at Casa Mar y Montana. We could not have asked for a better spot. It is a few steps from town with stunning views of Sayulita. The property was extremely clean, very secure and had a lot of chill spots. We felt like we were home the whole time we were there. The property manager, cleaning lady and owner were extremely friendly and helpful. As mentioned in other reviews yes there is a very steep hill to the house. We had fun with it, some days we went up and down just for an extra work out. Let me tell you our buns were a lot firmer when we left. I would not hesitate to book Casa Mar y Montana again and hopefully someday we will be able to make it back to Sayulita to do just that. If you are in any way still up in the air on this rental, just do it. You will not be disappointed.
We love Sayulita. We'd visited the town before for a shorter period of time and this time we stayed a month!
The house and gardens are absolutely lovely and situated on a hill at the end of town near the bus stop. So, it's a few blocks walk to town, but easy - we did it at least twice a day with a three-year-old, who also walked the whole way (including back up the steep hill to the house!) You could rent a golf cart if you'd rather not deal with the hill - our neighbors had one.
One of the nicest factors for us was that the house was continually supplied with fresh drinking water. The housekeeper, in particular, but the gardener as well, were both very helpful in getting us water quickly a couple times when we either ran out or were on the verge of it. Something to keep in mind - neither of them speak very much english at all, which makes communicating needs and questions about the house challenging. My husband speaks enough Spanish that we worked through it, but I would have had trouble on my own.
We loved the house and highly recommend it - especially at the off season rate, it was a great price. We've been to Sayulita in both Feb and June/July now. The temperature wasn't much higher in the summer, but the humidity made it feel so much hotter - like, dripping sweat hotter. On the up side, if you were worried about the town feeling dead during the summer - it is just as bustling as when we were there in the winter. The beginning of July the schools let out in Mexico and the beaches were packed again then! That was actually a bit of a downside. We still had a great time.
Other things to keep in mind -
If you plan to utilize the outdoor sleeping area upstairs, ask for the mosquito netting - it gets pretty buggy at night.
We also ran into a few scorpions upstairs and on the stairs to the upstairs - they hide in the fallen petals, so don't walk barefoot through there unless you keep it swept.
There is no air conditioning, but beyond the ceiling fans in the bedrooms there is also a large extra fan in each bedroom. In our room we pointed the fan at the bed and made a sort of tent of the mosquito netting around the bed, with the fan on the inside of that - that way we had full force fan, but it didn't blow the mosquito netting off. No need to use the mosquito netting at all if you keep your window and door shut at night, but we sometimes wanted ours open when it was especially hot.
We would recommend this house and would stay again!

The town is great - we ate out most lunch/dinners and took a boat out to the Marietas. Casa Mar is just far enough away from town that you don't get a lot of noise, but close enough that walking is actually pleasant - there is a bit of a hill on the way back, but it was a nice little workout after dinner!
The issues we had we the property were minor, just the usual quirks of coming to someone else's home and trying to figure it out on your own (like how to figure out the hot water, where the toilet paper is, stuff like that)! There was plenty of water in the kitchen for drinking, and the rooms were cool and spacious (we never really saw mosquitos, so we didn't use the net!). The property manager responded very quickly to my emails to bring us water & things, and we only saw the gardener once. I'd say if you like privacy and can manage a bit on your own, this is perfect! We will DEFINITELY be coming back to stay!! Thank you so much!
We loved our stay in Sayulita at Casa mar y montana. It was exactly what we expected. No surprises. The kitchen had everything we needed and we were even surprised to have someone come and empty garbages, clean bathrooms and change sheets and towels every couple days. The hill up the driveway is very steep as mentioned in other reviews, but never seemed to bother us at all. Overall, great stay and great value.
The property was beautiful, proximity to the middle of town was good and the owners responded to emails very quickly.
We rented one room at the house and ended up sharing the property with a lovely couple who we enjoyed spending our week with.
Upon arrival we noticed a few things in our room that needed to be taken care of
- ceiling fans were broken so they had been replaced with floor ones that blow the bug net onto you all night
- No top sheet on the bed only a duvet, and it is extremely hot as well as the beds being very uncomfortable, we ended up putting the duvet under the sheet to provide some extra padding
- There was no toilet paper in our room and the shower did not seem like it had been cleaned
We then had no water for 2 days of our stay and they did provide additional bottled watered and these things happen, no ones fault.
When we went to leave we noticed things missing from our room, we had locked all the doors and windows everytime we left the property and still had items stolen: My husbands shoes with orthotics, my sunglass and an envelope of canadian money which I forgot to put in the safe.
Despite these things we had a good week, although not very relaxing.
We would like to thank the owners for having us stay in their home, but we will not be returning.
Sayulita is a fun and vibrant town with lots of great places to eat. We recommend Burrito Revolution, Real Fish Tacos, Aleyahs, and Choco Banana.
We went there during semana-senta, driving from Puebla to Sayulita 12 hours, but have to say it was worth it.
The little village has it unique atmosphere which I could not compare with the big-fancy-hotel-resorts. In Sayulita, the life has stopped for a while, despite it is visible that this hideaway is somehow quickly catching-up with the tourist boom. Still, falling asleep with local-night-street music, later being woken up by the sound of roosters, then going to the local little street store and buy fresh fruits and vegetables, seeing all people relaxed living in their-own speed of life, kids running around, street-dogs just hanging out totally harmless, taco-places, restaurants, coffee places ... it has its magic.
Good, finally about the property, the magic house where we stayed. It is approx. 5 minutes form the beach and the "downtown" of the village. To access it, you need to walk about 100 meters uphill, but is a good exercise, to be honest, we loved it, makes your heart pump a bit :-) but the view on other hand is veeeeeery nice, especially whereas you have the view on the whole lagoon.
The garden was very well kept, it is visible that the gardener was coming there very often. You have 2 sun-beds available to enjoy the sun also privately, without being seen by any neighbors. A coconut tree was making a nice shade for a while, which we enjoyed as well, also a nice sound in the evening and a weak wind/breeze was playing with its leafs.
The property gas a beautiful and romantic kitchen, full of colors and small details of items, which I would buy as souvenirs probably, typical mexican things. There is nothing you miss in the kitchen. Close is a back-yard grill with tables and chairs, was very useful when we grilled the fish which we caught in the sea during our boat-trip.
Rooms, myself with my wife, we stayed in the room connected to the kitchen, was a very nice room, tall ceiling, mosquito net over the bed, comfortable bed, cute bathroom, many towels, nothing more you need. Our friend was sleeping upstairs in an open-space balcony, we were jealous at him, was very cool. It has a single-bed, and this room is more of a type of dining-room, but is possible to be used to spend the night … however this person needs to use the bathroom downstairs in one of the rooms.
We had a great time there, enjoying every minute, felt somehow like home … and this is probably the purpose of the owner when they built it … can only recommend !!!
The house is only a 10 minute walk from the village and the main beaches. There are several beaches to choose from. Whether you prefer secluded natural beauties, surf beaches, safe swimming in a sheltered bay or hanging out in the restaurants and bars on the main beach, Sayulita offers it all. The hiljlside location can be reached via cobble stoned roads
The property manager lives in the village, she speaks well english.
