If the blissful vacation rental you stayed at inspired you to make your home a more beautiful place, roll up your sleeves and get to work. It only takes an afternoon or a weekend of sweat to produce an adorable little accent that’ll dial up the fabulosity of your living space. Here are six gorgeous DIY home projects inspired by some of our favorite HomeAway pads.

A cheerful little window seat

Design inspiration: We’re in love with the cozy window seat at this waterfront house (right) in Greenport, New York. With expansive bay views and a bookcase border, it’s an idyllic little spot for relaxing with a novel and a glass of rose.

DIY project: Bring the cozy back home with this DIY built-in-bookshelf and window seat project by Sand & Sisal (left). According to blogger Kim, it’s an easier project than you might think. You’ll need some spare time and a few power tools, but with a little elbow grease and a free weekend or two, you’ll have your own little book nook—with or without the Atlantic views.

Beautiful, interesting floor tiles

Design inspiration: This Rome apartment (right) has some of the most dazzling, colorful marble floor tiles we’ve seen. But it wouldn’t exactly be easy on the wallet to install hand-painted Italianate marble in your abode. So we dug up a budget-friendly project that’ll add some interest to even the drabbest of floors.

DIY project: It’s like a rug … but it’s not. Floorcloths are super-durable works of art that you can walk on. Check out this DIY painted canvas floorcloth tutorial from Design Sponge (left). Of course it’s not antique marble imported from the Mediterranean. But it’s clever and affordable way to spruce up a room or an entryway. Plus, you can customize the hand-printed pattern to fit your style.

A leafy vertical garden

Design inspiration: The flourishing vertical garden climbing a poolside wall at this Cancun rental (right) gives the property’s outdoor space a luxuriant, lush ambiance. It adds a verdant vibe while keeping the pool deck open and airy.

DIY project: Make this adorable mini vertical garden (left) in an afternoon. Check out the tutorial from HGTV, which details how to use a crate, some chicken wire, and a pine board (essentially) to craft your own little slice of Cancun-inspired adornment.

A fanciful hanging bed

Design inspiration: From the spiral staircase that curves around the trunk of an 800-year-old juniper tree to the bedroom skylights that allow nighttime stargazing, this cabin-style property is full of spectacular design elements. Plus, the guest rooms at this Coos Bay, Oregon, rental are outfitted with rustic hanging beds, which are suspended from the ceiling via ropes (right).

DIY project: Build a hanging daybed for your yard with this HGTV tutorial (left). We recommend tackling this project if you have some experience with woodworking, as it requires a bit of basic carpentry. In other words, you’ll need to be handy with a drill.

A shabby-chic chandelier

Design inspiration: The antique chandelier in the kitchen of this historical Tuscan villa (right) is the stuff of design dreams. It summons the elegance of a bygone century as it hangs above an ancient stone dining table in a 15th-century kitchen.

DIY project: Turn an unsightly brass chandelier into a chic Mediterranean-inspired focal point with some spray paint (left). Get the easier-than-you-might-think instructions from Little Green Notebook.

A mid-century modern starburst

Design inspiration: Like any classic mid-century home, this Austin rental (right) features a beautiful gold starburst clock on its living room wall. The atomic starburst shape is, after all, one of the most loved mid-century designs. But you don’t need to scour antique shops to get a starburst of your very own.

DIY project: According to this tutorial from The Spruce, you can make a starburst mirror (left) by essentially attaching some wooden dowels to the back of a mirror with a glue gun and spray-painting the whole thing. The finished product looks a lot more high-end than you might expect.
