Our group of four friends has been traveling together for many years, and the Slate Hill Schoolhouse definitely ranks high on our list of Most Charming Accommodations. We loved all the old school décor (even some barely visible initials carved into the classroom woodwork!), and the house was spacious, welcoming, and well appointed. Keith was very helpful during the reservation process, and he was kind enough to stop by to say hello. The surrounding area is beautiful, especially during the time of fall colors. Being from Maryland, we had all been to several spots in the area, including Luray, Front Royal, and Skyline Drive, but the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park was new to all of us. The Visitor Contact Station was a great place to start, and we did a self-guided audio driving tour that gave us some new insights and an idea of the scope of this battle that took place late in the Civil War. After all that history and all that leaf-peeping, what could be better than some ice cream on a warm day? We headed to Flotzie's Soft Serve in Luray and enjoyed every lick. All in all, it was a great getaway--we might be back someday!
