Excellent, long stay in Alcoutim with our dog

                                5 of 5
We just retired from the US and were going to travel to Europe for a year. We chose Portugal and Spain to be our first 3-month stay and found this lovely Alcoutim house as a base to travel to Spain, Portugal, Algarve, etc. In all, we headquartered in Alcoutim for 2.5 months. It was a perfect place for that central setup as we did a lot of travel to Sevilla, Ronda, the Algarve, Sagres, Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, and Cascais. When back in Alcoutim, it was a nice, slower pace in a really beautiful area along the Guadiana River. The house was perfect for our needs and is very well equipped. The wifi worked very well and the kitchen was also well stocked. The deck downstairs and upstairs were great for relaxing and reading. It was perfect 'down' time. The beds were comfortable and we even had wood to burn in the free-standing stove in the kitchen area that was welcomed as the nights got cooler. I have to say meeting the owners, Polly & Christian, was a decided treat. They are fun, charming, extremely accommodating, friendly, engaging, and gave us all the space we needed in a rental. They also provided a lot of info about the village, where to go for shopping, where to eat, where to get a good vet, inside 'tips' on their fellow villagers. We even had many interesting and pointed political talks about the US election (nobody understands the Trump phenomenon) and Brexit as they are well versed in politics, economic matters, and even entertainment (books, movies, music, etc.). I am not sure we'll ever go back there but I can't more highly praise our experience with this house and its owners. In addition, they welcomed our small dog as part of the family. There also is plenty to do along the river and outdoor activities. The setting is peaceful and quiet but again, a great place to see the Algarve (plenty of towns and beaches to visit and trips into Spain as Sevilla is only a 2-hour drive). Thanks, Polly and Christian, Lilly, and Maya for such excellent hospitality. (A side note, we found the best Indian food at Shiva near the center of town that rivaled anything we've had in the US.)

Wonderful introduction to the Algave coast!

As this was our first visit to Portugal and the southern coast, we couldn't have asked for a better experience than our stay at Casa Semaphore! Our grandson (16) said his only requirements were a great view and nice pool. Well, we got that in spades. Privacy, views, lovely and luxurious, spotless home and pool, with glass doors all over that opened to terraces and gave you an outdoor feeling indoors. We were 3 generations with grandchildren 16,13 and 11 who each found their perfect nook in this spacious villa. Marie Diane, one of the owners.was instrumental in welcoming us before the visit with car rental, boat rental and perfect directions, along with any other information requested. Tim, the pool manager/caretaker gave us recommendations for excellent, inexpensive and memorable restaurants. Natalia came to the villa daily and inobtrusively tidied the bedrooms and cleaned the bathrooms.Having rented a number of times in Europe, we've never felt so cared for. Grandkids and grown ups loved the water park and swimming off the beach in a cave at the Benagil caves. There was much to do but we relished the peace and guiet of the area as we had just had a very busy week prior to our stay. Well located, near airport, beaches, restaurants and stores and yet away from the touristy, crowded areas. Can't say enough about Casa Semaphore and our wonderful visit.

Great cottage/chalet in Sagres. Clean and comfortable. Close to beaches, cliffs, hiking, etc.

We stayed in mid May. Villa Medronho is exactly as described, being at the end of a driveway on the road going into Sagres. It has a downstairs kitchen, couch and eating area, a bathroom and a loft for sleeping. Even though it is close to the main road, it is quite quiet and private. Isabel was very kind, responding immediately to our inquiries before arriving (we didn't have any once there; all was in place and easy). We had a rental car, which made getting to the various beaches, visiting other towns, and going to places to hike easy. There is lots to do within 10 minutes of the Villa and much more within 1/2 hour or 45 minutes. Eg., we went to the incredible cliffs near Lagos, to Salema, to other towns on the west coast, to Cabo Sao Vicente (amazing to be at the very SW corner of Europe!), etc all within 1/2 hour. Sagres is a nice little town - away from the crowded tourist areas west of Lagos, with a more small town real feel. The beaches are empty in May and the air was cool (20-22 degrees) and clear. We wished we could have stayed several more days.
