My boyfriend and I (late 20's, early 30's) chose Bocas Del Toro as our vacation destination this year, neither of us having been there before, but both having heard great things. Having Muhammed as our Bocas travel guide and his condo as our home made this trip the most incredible vacation we could have ever asked for. The condo is basic but very clean, perfectly sized for two (or four) people, and in a prime location if you want to live amongst the locals, but be close enough to town to walk/taxi/bike in and be involved in all the action. Across the street from a quiet beach (wake up early to catch the gorgeous Bocas sunrise!) and next door to the only gas station in town (complete with a very basic mini-mart- super convenient for a quick breakfast or a cold six-pack) so it was fairly easy to grab a taxi as they all need to come through there anyway. As other reviewers have said, it's a mere $0.60 per person to taxi into town, but if you choose to walk or bike there are marvelous spots along your way including Bocas Del Toro's only brewery, Bocas Brewery (three minute walk from your front door!). Not to mention, this place was one of the only rentals we found that had a private pool- a huge plus for days you just wanted to sit back and relax.
Muhammed was absolutely fabulous. Not only did we arrive to a bottle of wine welcoming us, Muhammed accidentally misspelled my name in one email, realized it, and wrote us an apology accompanied by yet another bottle of wine! It was so sweet and totally unnecessary, but shows what character and kindness he possesses. Muhammed went above and beyond: setting up excursions for us (it seems he knows everyone on the island- a BIG plus- all we had to say was 'we are staying at Muhammed's' to any cab driver and they knew where to go!), providing dinner recommendations and even booking the reservations for us, and he even explained how to cut down a coconut in our own backyard so we could cut it open and have fresh coconut water in the morning!
I really can't say enough fantastic things about Muhammed, his condo, and Bocas Del Toro. Only minor issues we found were that the fridge sometimes froze some of our items (but we were eating out most of the time so this was not a big deal), and the kitchen could be a bit better stocked (at least for people staying there long term who wanted to cook often). Despite those minor items, couldn't have asked for a better trip. Thank you again Muhammed! Hope to be back soon to visit!
