We really enjoyed our stay the last 3 weeks of October. Definitely recommend! The primary (street) level contains a fully equipped kitchen, a family room with ceiling width skylights and fireplace that opens to a large & comfortable deck with views of the mountains, golf course and river, a great room with floor to ceiling library - clerestory windows - dining area & another fireplace, a powder room, and a master bedroom and bathroom with a wonderful jacuzzi tub. We are avid readers, so the 1000+ book library was a great bonus. There are lots of windows everywhere for fresh air, light and view. 2 more bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room are on the lower level, open to a patio.
There is lots to do in the Mt Mitchell Golf Course area including hiking many trails along the Black Mountains. Mt Mitchell to Mt Craig to Big Tom is a favorite, as is the Balsam Trail, hiking Roaring Fork Falls, Setrock Falls and the Devils Den from Black Mountain & Briar Bottom campgrounds - which you can also hike to from the subdivision along the River Trail, and the South Toe River (at Carolina Hemlocks Campground). Avid hikers, in shape, and with a good satellite GPS (like MotionX for iPhone) & paper topographical map, will want to hike to Mt Mitchell summit from Alpine Village at the top of the subdivision - strenuous - from +/- 3500' to 6684' over trails, rocks & roots - 9 to 10 hours round trip!
The house is off Route 80, just a couple miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and close to the Little Switzerland Inn for fine dining and drinks at the Chalet Restaurant and Fowl Play Pub. Spruce Pine and Linville Falls are just a little farther up the Blue Ridge for shopping and more great hiking and fine dining (at Knife & Fork). Micaville and Burnsville are about 30 minutes north on Route 80. Navatat Zip Line Adventures and Asheville are about an hour south.
Almost Heaven was a very relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. We would definitely stay here again.
