This place is my sanctuary. I’ve been here three times now, and can’t wait to go back. The moment we walk in the door, I feel welcome and happy. That sense of welcome pervades the entire house, which somehow manages to be both spacious and cozy. There are huge windows everywhere, surrounding you with ambient light and stunning views of the lake.
We spent most of our time in the enormous great room. It extends from the front of the house, which is anchored by the original stone fireplace, to the dining area and wall of windows in the back. The dining area has enough seating for everyone in your extended family, including your Auntie Mame and your Cousin It. I started each day by pondering the meaning of life with a great big cup of coffee, gazing at the lake from the dining room table. And those tables are good for more than meals. They’re just begging you to play a game of cards, or haul out one of the many board games provided for guests. The kitchen is loaded with anything you can imagine needing. I had visions of cooking some fancy-dancy dishes while I was there, but…nah. Too many other important things to do. Like catch fireflies.
If you want something a bit more intimate, there are lots of great nooks and crannies to snuggle up in. I especially enjoyed the sun porch, which looks out on the lake and has a nice collection of books lining its shelves. While I must confess that I spent some time pecking away on my laptop from this perch (they do provide good internet), the allure of holding a hardcover book in my hands, coupled with the warmth of the sun on my face, eventually seduced me into extricating myself from my usual digital quagmire. I unplugged.
There is something about this house and its setting that makes me feel as if I have gone back in time. It is beautifully decorated, with just the right balance of knotty pine walls, soothing color palettes and whimsical rustic touches. A perfect blend of nature, nostalgia, and modern-day comfort. All four of the bedrooms are charming. The master bedroom is especially spacious, with an expansive view of the lake.
The owners are friendly and considerate, and expert at making you feel comfortable. On one trip, I was by myself when a huge snowstorm came in. Katy made sure I was dug out and plowed out. I got to watch the lake freeze and then unfreeze, snug as a bug in a rug. Magical.
This is truly a bucolic place. I have found it to be good for the soul, and a healing balm for the heart.
