Arrived early evening for six night stay at the end of May. Warmly greeted by Mary Ann (property owner and host) and several of the other guests who were gathered for impromptu evening appetizers and chat around the island in the spacious and well provisioned kitchen. An auspicious start to a wonderful week at a beautiful property in an idyllic woodland setting. Our room, with private bath was large and airy, clean, comfortable and impeccably furnished including both TV and wifi so that we could enjoy as much privacy as we desired. We felt immediately comfortable. The house itself is large, and open with natural sunlight streaming in throughout the day. The grounds are wonderfully landscaped and maintained. There is a swimming pool (which was being open the for the season the day we departed) surrounding by a large patio area and any number of comfortable patio chairs. There is a built in gas grill. There is a large wooded deck at the back of the house, overlooking the pool, the lawn and the woodlands where we ate breakfast every morning.
Perfect time of year to be in Northern Virginia. The woodlands that surround the property are lush, green, dappled with patches of sunlight during the day. The air is filled with cardinals, and blue jays, ravens, and ospreys and dozens of other species of birds. Great base to hike or bike from. Every day of our stay, we took long walks around the neighborhood and through the nearby National Wildlife Refuge, catching occasional glimpses of wildlife, e.g., a gray fox, muskrat, rabbits, etc.
And perhaps best of all for some, the house is located only a short distance - half hour or so from DC, Old Towne Alexandria and National Harbor in Maryland - so is in easy reach of all the history, culture, fine and eclectic dining the Nation's Capital has to offer.
Bottom line we loved this place. We were in town to visit family and it provided a perfect base for our daily excursions with them. While it is not really a place for a family with kids, It is ideal for a couple on a house hunting trip, or visiting relatives as we were, or attending a concert, sporting event, wedding or whatever in the area. The property is also very close to Fort Belvoir so it is a great place for military personnel either on temporary duty or short term assignment. Whether you will be in the area for a week or a month or longer, highly recommend you consider contacting Mary Ann about staying at Villa Lioni.
