Best Place Ever

5 of 5
We've stayed here numerous times--Fall, Winter, Early Summer--and it's always great. Perched on the water, with wonderful views of the lake, you feel almost like you are on a boat. In the winter, it's like being on a town square, because you can watch people ice fishing, skiing, and walking their dogs on the frozen lake. The cottage is equipped with everything you could possibly need, from kitchen equipment to linens, and we particularly enjoyed making fires in the charming stone fireplace. Outside there's a deck, a garden and a dock for warm weather use. We enjoyed skiing on the lake and snowmobile trails, and there's a great cross-country ski place in Bethel, about an hour's drive from Winthrop. It's a short trip for good eats at the Emporium in Readfield, or to Hallowell for restaurants, antiques, and browsing. Best of all are the hosts, Diane and Greg, who are the proverbial salt of the earth. Greg is a mine of information on the local area, and Diane makes award-winning pottery in her Winthrop studio. Living across the street from the cottage, they have always made us feel at home during our stays and been incredibly responsive to our requests, even finding us other places to stay if they were booked up!

FAMILY MEMORIES

5 of 5
My husband grew up on Lake Maranacook on the Readfield side. His family owned one of the tourist homes so you can imagine the fondness that he and his brother had for this lake. All of their 7 daughters grew up with amazing stories of family, games and this lake in an era of peacefulness, family games and playing in and around the lake. The week was selected, daughters and kids arrived and settled in. With Dennis's attentive hosting and thoughtful nuances (towels, dishes, games, deck chairs, BBQ, TVs, kayaks, life preservers, etc) they felt like they were "home" immediately. Then the rest of us would arrive and come and go daily! MEMORIES....we were across the lake from and able to "see" the familiar areas around Tallwood and the former Townsend Farm Inn. This meant home and and heart to all of us....words can not express what a delight and comfort this week was. We all made it to the lake daily...and the youmgest ones...well....its not an exageration to say, that everytime any adult said, "I'm going down to the water," there would be a mad sprint for suits and towels and the kids would beat them down the path! When we'd tire of the sunshine (who knew?) we had plenty of room to spread out in the house. We had TVs, ping pong, board games....but Grandma's and grandkids' favorite was dominoes on the dining room table! Groceries were nearby....and so was Pat's Pizza in Augusta (another family tradition) and plenty of places to stop for an evening ice cream....oh...and lobster...the traditional Maine feast?...of course!....our only request from Dennis for next year?.....a BIG 'ol LOBSTER pot for the kitchen! There have been hundreds of photos to share and weeks later, the family is still smiling and sharing the new Lake Maranacook memories. Another topic is now included, though......what new memories lie in store for us NEXT year! As my husband often says, "The game's a foot!" We are certainly booking early for another amazing summer blast so the kids will have their own Maranacook stories to add to ours. Kudos to Dennis and this wonderful and homey home and location! THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

Exceeded expectations

5 of 5
The area had a lot to offer with hiking, boating and fishing. The house had everything that we needed for the week that we stayed there and just as pictured online.. Shopping and dining were easily reached by being only a few miles from the house, especially Ninety-Nine restaurant and Belgrade Seafood for lobster rolls and Day's Store for fresh-steamed lobster.. Nighttime breezes along with visits from the loons made for enjoyable evenings. This was our first time staying in the Belgrades region and we will probably be coming back in the future.
