              Quiet, beautiful waterside compound

              4 of 5
We just got back from a wonderful week in Mt Desert! We had 14 in our family from ages 3-78. The good: *The view! Spectacular during high tide! Definitely recommend kayaking in Squid Cove out to Squid Island) We saw 2 seals:) Water is so calm. We were so amazed how much the water came in and out (and how quickly!) between high/low tide. *The location - quiet area of the island and close to Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor is a zoo! *Crabs, hermit crabs, little crayfish near the shore:) Hoping to see more sea creatures. Saw one starfish! *Kitchen was well stocked (appreciated some spices in the pantry - we left a few ourselves) *Beds were comfortable *Comfortable living area in new house *Board games and lawn games (croquet & bocci - the kids had a blast playing both on the lawn area next to the new house) Not so good: * In the old cottage, had issues with opening/closing the door in the kitchen *Locking doors was a bit confusing - we didn't end up locking up any of the doors - I know some of my family was not comfortable with that. *There should be some directions on using the fireplaces in the old cottage. We had smoke coming in the cabin because we didn't realize to tie up the chain for the flue. Even when we tied the chain up, we still had some smoke coming in the rooms (there's a fireplace in the master bedroom, family room and the bedroom with the queen + 2 bunk beds). Bummer! The bedrooms smelled smokey for several days:( *Mosquitos!!! Bring your mosquito spray + anti-itch medicine! We probably each got at least 15 bites! More noticeable during low tide. *Furniture for new house was not put outside but was quickly fixed with a phone call. I think we were the first ones using the houses for the season so things were not quite prepared. *Bathrooms/bedrooms in the old cottage were not as tidy as the new house. Cobwebs, bugs in shower, dust in the master bedroom. I realize we are in the wilderness here but we expect it to be super clean. I'm guessing the houses were not cleaned just before we got there. *Had some issues with animal noises in the middle of the night. Raccoons under the baseboards in the master bedroom - terrible sound! Google it! In the master bedroom in the new house, we had mice making scratching sounds but luckily it only lasted 2 nights but still! We even had a sound machine and we woke up to the scratching sounds:( Overall, we had a memorable vacation!!
