For most of us, a trip to Maine is about discovering that little slice of “Americana”. We are looking for cool breezy evenings by the campfire, majestic mountain peaks, breathtaking sunrises, and picturesque harbors full of lobster boats. You’ll find all of this in the Acadia National Park area. There are literally thousands of options for accommodations so let me make this easy for you – Blackwoods Cottage.
Staying directly in Bar Harbor can be a bit “noisy” – cruise ships and tour buses tend to arrive periodically throughout the day. Located about 5 miles South of Bar Harbor, Blackwoods Cottage is in the village of Ottercreek. Ottercreek is tiny, but has it’s own little market, a gourmet restaurant, and it is nice and quiet. Also, the entrance to Cadillac Mountain hiking trail is within walking distance, two access points to Acadia National park are a quick drive, and there is a bus stop steps away from the cottage.
When we were planning our trip, I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for, but I had an image in my head of a charming rustic cabin that would be warm and cozy – classic New England. When I came across Blackwoods Cottage online I immediately fell in love. There was just something about it that made it special and the photos certainly do it justice in this case.
The front porch is almost as big and wide as the house and it was probably my favorite spot. Cheerful, clean and bright, I could certainly see spending hours enjoying a good book, a bottle of wine or conversation with friends. There is also a grill on the porch where we enjoyed grilling a steak and sharing a bottle of wine. The bonfire in the backyard was fantastic!
The interior was so charming, warm and for lack of a better way to put it – kinda felt like a big hug. The kitchen was adorable with its vintage-style appliances and Peggy left us a basket full of coffee, muffins and guidebooks.
The bedrooms upstairs were very clean, comfortable and quiet. We slept like babies. When it comes to bathrooms, I have to admit that this is where a lot of rentals typically loose me. I’m a bit of a freak about bathrooms. Let me assure you that Blackwood’s was a non-issue - it was great.
Here is the best part of Blackwoods – Peggy! She provided us with really helpful website links, useful information that only a “local” would know, and great advice on things to do and places to eat. We followed almost all of her advice and had a fantastic trip! Can't wait to return!
