Cozy House stay exceeded expectations

5 of 5
Our stay here exceeded our expectations. This was our first time using VRBO and was very happy with it. This house was as advertised and a very convenient location to the snowshoeing and skiing. The owner was easy to contact and checked in with us during the stay to make sure we didn't have any questions.

Great ski weekend home

5 of 5
We found it cozy, quiet, clean, and spacious. It's conveniently located within minutes of Sunday River at a very affordable price. Ideal place for up to 6 people looking for a fun ski weekend together.

Great view of the frozen lake

5 of 5
We stayed during the Christmas week, having driven from the south with two kids to play in the snow. This is a comfortable, warm, well-kept and picturesque (inside and out) little house in a beautiful setting. We had a fantastic view of the frozen lake, with islands, from everywhere in the house through picture windows; one morning a fox walked across the lake to kids' excitement. A nice wood fireplace was used every evening. The shower is a bit cramped, but usable. Importantly for winter travel, we had a 15" snowfall the night before our departure, but the town very efficiently cleaned all public roads in early morning, so we had no problem getting out (after shoveling the short driveway, while kids played in fresh snow). The big Sunday River ski resort is a 15-minute drive. There is a smaller place, Mt. Abram, just 5 minutes away, where lift tickets to the beginners' part of the mountain cost half, with no lift lines, a magic-carpet lift, and the slopes that are more than the beginners need (though check their schedule -- they may not be open full week outside the holiday season. They also have less snow than Sunday River.) Sledding tip: the school at Church St. in Bethel has an icy hill for kids with sleds; it is free and has a mountain view for parents to enjoy. We also did cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing (from a skiing shop off the main road leading to Bethel); the winter forest setting was fairy-tale. On the other hand, the late-evening horse-sleigh ride from the Bethel Inn wasn't quite as interesting. We didn't have time to try snowcatting and, heading home, were envious of those riding Arctic Cats across the fields of deep fresh snow -- this is left for next winter. The supermarket on Bethel's main street has everything (including wine). The bakery shop on that street, "Di Cocoa," has very good cappuccino and artisan pastry; try their apple-raspberry pie, and do get your caffeine fix there before heading back home, because the next espresso machine may be hours away.
