      Beautiful bayou experience!

      4 of 5
My family stayed on Linda's houseboat the week of May 29. I planned this vacation over a year ago and was anticipating a great adventure! Unfortunately, the pontoon boat was not operational and the canoe had been smashed a few weeks prior, greatly reducing the activities I had planned. This was very disappointing, but we were determined to make the best of things. There were kayaks too, but after seeing the very large gator swim behind the houseboat one morning, I was pretty sure our little girl would not go for that!! (honestly, me neither!!) The bayou is beautiful and filled with diverse wildlife. Crawfish, snakes, turtles, birds, fish & gators galore!! It rained heavy the last day & night we were there and unbeknown-est to us, that was prime crawfish time! Locals were outside with nets and buckets scooping up tons of crawfish that were flooding the streets and ditches, free food for the taking!! All the people we encountered in Morgan City were very friendly! Rouse's market has everything, rivaled the best markets Springfield, Mo has. We tried Susie's Seafood, got the seafood platter and a dozen crabs. The people at Susie's were very nice and showed us the proper way to eat the crabs, but we were not a fan of how they were prepared. It seems that crawfish and crabs are either cooked in a flavored broth (lemons, onions, seasonings) or as with Susie's, cooked or steamed in water, then a salty seasoning liberally sprinkled over. This is the easiest way, but not the most flavorful. The seafood platter was a little lack luster, nothing special. Rita Mae's got great reviews, but were closed the three times we went there for dinner, so maybe next time...Contrary to popular belief, the mosquitoes were not that bad, only got bit maybe once. Maybe we were just lucky. Linda and her staff were friendly and available to help with anything. The houseboat is well stocked with everything from pantry items, toiletries, to movies, books and games. The bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed being gently rocked to sleep every night. Internet was pretty spotty, but while on vacation who needs to spend a lot of time doing that? I'd recommend this houseboat to anyone. All in all this was a wonderful experience and has made my family want to move to the bayou, at least part time!!! Thanks Linda! Paula R.
