Stephan met us at the train station when we arrived and whisked us to the apartment in the gleaming Audi sedan. Our exceptional and I daresay perfect experience started then. Stephan exceeded our expectations at every turn. Expectations we didn’t even know we had were exceeded - for instance, the lovely orange blossom soap. I loved it. I will start with the cleanliness of the apartment which was both charming and spotless. We met Eva, who exceeded herself in putting the apartment in order in rapid fashion so that we were comfortable early in the afternoon. The apartment is within the walled city, minutes from everything of interest. It is comfortable, quiet, and provides you the ability to get it icy cold or to warm it up - it has an efficient A/C unit as well as a heater. It is also well appointed, with wonderful coffee, boxes of tea, candy everywhere, and perhaps most outstandingly extra towels. Our host has apparently spared no expense or effort in making this a place that he himself would be happy to live in. He mentioned to us that the mattress on the bed is the same one that he has in his home. I contemplated that fact while helping myself to brandy poured from a glass decanter on the table in front of the leather sofa and while reading a book that he authored. We had the good fortune of arranging and experiencing a full day wine country tour with Stephan. While that was at additional cost to the cost of the apartment, it was in our opinion well worth it, and we will never forget walking across the Pont du Gard with Stephan and hearing the history of its construction. Or tasting wine with expert commentary at Chateauneuf de Pape. I almost hesitate to mention this last fact, because I do not want to put Stephan on the hook for this type of activity all the time: the day we left Avignon, Stephan drove us to the rental car desk at the TVG station and waited until we were assured that our car was on premises and ready for us before he shook our hands and wished us bon voyage. His apartment is delightful, and that is because he is an exceptional host and person. If you are looking for an accommodation and a host to make your time in Avignon wonderful, please look no further. Stephan, merci a vous.
