          Amazing house and location

We stayed for 14 days over the New Year and early January. We are from Ohio in the northern U.S. so our January weather is very similar. Akureyri though is more windy and the roads are often snow and ice covered. Should one visit this property in the middle of winter? Yes with some recommendations. You need to be fit enough to walk the 200 yards from the gate to the house if the driveway is too snowy and drifted. My wife and I are 66 years old, go to the gym four days a week and are fit. We had no trouble getting around during our visit. The locals did say this was a mild winter compared to normal. Bring walking crampons (snow cleats) for icy conditions including in town. During our visit we were always able to drive up to the house but then we also rented a Toyota Land Cruiser with studded winter tires. You need this kind of vehicle if you will be visiting when it may be snowy. A few times we parked at the end of the driveway just in case the drifting snow was bad. The street just outside the gate is plowed as needed, usually within a couple hours of the snow ending. When snow and wind were forecast we prepared to be snowed in a day or two and I would recommend doing that, but happily we were never snowed in. The house itself is wonderful. On our initial tour with the property manager my impression was that it was twice as impressive as the photos on the website. I was concerned about the comfort of the fold out bed in the third bedroom but my sister, who is picky, said it is the most comfortable fold out bed she has ever slept on. The views from the house are beautiful and picturesque. The drive to Akureyri is just over 10 minutes. If the weather and roads are decent you can visit the Lake Myvatn area to the east and drive the western side of the fjord up through the four tunnels. There were a couple problems with the house during our visit but they were promptly fixed by the property manager and her husband. A couple additional comments, don’t miss the bakeries (they offer breakfast, lunch and coffee) or the fish and meat market at the Bonus on the south side of Akureyri. Everything is expensive in Iceland. With the fully equipped kitchen we were able to eat many meals at home reducing costs. We were never bored during our two weeks and could have stayed longer. We had a great view of the New Years Eve fireworks from the house but it might have been more fun to be in town.
