Charming jungle bungalow with everything you need, nothing you don't

                                                      5 of 5
Maria is an incredibly gracious host who makes an extra effort to ensure that you can make the most of the Hana region. Her bungalow is located just 30 minutes from the tiny town of Hana in a district called Nahiko. It is quiet, scenic and smack dab in the middle of the rain forest. This bungalow is perfect for couples who plan to cook their own dinner because all the kitchen implements and gadgets you might need to cook a gourmet meal are provided, and there is a wonderful screened-in separate dining room, complete with battery-operated candles for ambience. Maria will acquaint you with all that the region has to offer, and she will tell you about the best sights to see and the best places to park. Her information is more up-to-date than the guidebooks that we purchased, and she provided a printed itinerary with additional handwritten notes on a good map. We think the best way to experience Hana is to stock up on provisions at the big stores near the airport (Costco, Target, Safeway etc), put the perishables on ice in a styrofoam cooler, then take your time driving to Maria's place, stopping to frolic along the way. The drive takes about 1.5 hours nonstop, or 2.5 hours if you frolic. For fresh produce and fresh fish, we recommend stopping at the Mana Foods in Paia (a health food store and fresh grocery shop which is basically the last place to shop before you embark on the Hana Highway). Mana Foods has excellent fish and meat, better than the big stores near the airport. Arrive at 4:30, and settle into the comfy cottage for an early dinner. Next morning, get up early and go to Hana. You'll beat the crowds and you can enjoy the famous black sand beach and Oleo Gulch hikes before the hordes of tourists descend: the bus tours begin to arrive around 10 AM, so you'll want to hit the black sand beach before then and be on your way to O'Leo. You can stop at the beach or the arboretum on the way back, and when you see the lines of cars driving south to the National Park, you'll understand why you were glad to get an early start. There is more to do in Hana than you can squeeze into two days, even if you are fit. There are excellent hikes, several different beaches, and lots of places to explore. On Friday and Saturday night, Hana Farms has a fun pizza night using their stone ovens. Other than that, there are very few dinner options, so plan on cooking up a storm at home.

Can't say enough great things about Aunt Kali's

                                                      5 of 5
We were lucky enough to spend five days at Aunt Kali's cottage in Kihei. We had read the reviews before booking, and I am happy to confirm for you that they are absolutely spot on. The property is just as beautiful and well kept as it appears in the pictures, and Carrie and Jim could not have been more hospitable and friendly hosts. The cottage is completely separated from the family's home and has a gate you can close, which makes it feel very secluded and private. We felt very safe here and we had all the privacy we wanted. The pool, hot tub, grill, and gardens/yard were stunningly beautiful, as was the awe inspiring tiki bar (that gave me lots of ideas for back home!) and the cottage (really a two bedroom house) was perfect. We will always remember sitting by the back railing and looking out over the ocean to the right, and Halekala on the left… colorful geckos sunning themselves on wide banana leaves, local birds singing, a warm breeze blowing… so peaceful… sorry, where was I? Oh yes, the cottage. The attention to detail is evident everywhere you look. I am familiar with construction techniques and I can tell you Jim is a true craftsman who takes great pride in his work. And they really thought of everything. Not only do you have a fully equipped chef's kitchen in the cottage, but the tiki bar also has its own fully equipped kitchen complete with a full set of dishes and a blender for making fruity drinks, poolside (the absolute best place for fruity drinks in my opinion). The cottage had everything we could ever have needed, including laundry facilities, a better equipped kitchen than our own back home (want to make Sushi? Look in the drawer – brand new sushi knife and rolling mat!), a full set of beach gear (Boogie boards, coolers, chairs etc), plastic dishware for outside… just anything you could want. Carrie and Jim even provided a selection of local fruits and macadamia nuts for us, which was really nice after a long plane ride! Also the location was ideal. It is on the southern side of Kihei (closer to Wailea really) right down the road from some really great beaches and some fun restaurants in Kihei, and only 20-30 minutes from the airport, the start of the road to Hana (or the road to the summit of Haleakala), or the shopping/nightlife Mecca of Lahaina. It didn’t take very long for us to start thinking of this as our “home” on Maui! Our only regret is not booking a longer stay. Thank you Carrie & Jim!

Amazing retreat in an architecturally beautiful home on a secluded and stunning rural property.

We can highly recommend this gorgeous home and property to anyone who wants to escape the throngs of tourists for a quiet retreat. The sweeping and unobstructed views of sunsets on the ocean and sunrises on Haleakula are heavenly. The home and property were expertly clean and well tended. Beach gear is available for day trips to the many nearby beaches. Debra P. was a wonderful hostess who is readily available to address any concerns. Photos of the villa and property don't do justice to this perfect Maui vacation retreat.
