Though this vacation was the first time I'd ever set foot in this house, it was full of memories for me. I went to elementary school in Kahuku half a century ago, before the town's sugar mill and several nearby blocks of old plantation cottages were torn down. This house has survived with dignity and grace. Thanks to a judicious renovation, it feels a lot brighter and airier than the plantation cottages I remember -- the well-equipped kitchen and bathroom are particularly appealing -- but it's still got the kind of covered lanai out front that is essential for hanging out with family and friends. I love the short walk past the golf course to the rocky beach nearby and the longer walk around the point toward the east to Malaekahana Beach (in my view there is no beach on Oahu more beautiful than this one). May this house continue to welcome families for decades to come!
