We had a great time at the chateau and could actually get some feeling of how the landed gentry must have lived (minus the servants, of course). The bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas were exceptional. The setting was marvellous as well, including the gardens and the area where the horses roamed. We spent many a meal outside on the front deck looking at the fields, hills and mountains. Even the weather was very agreeable this summer, warm during the day, cool at night.
We have three kids living in France, and each with his/her family stayed for roughly a week. This allowed us to have quality time with the kids and grandkids, and there was no lack of things to do and see in the area. Should note, however, that grocery shopping is about 15 minutes drive away. Would suggest shopping at Craponne, but the farmers' market at Retournac is worth a visit.
The owner (Cathy) and her mother (Hilary, who lives on the premises) were unbelievably helpful. One couldn't have asked for nicer support and they really made our stay a memorable one. Can't imagine anyone being disappointed with a week or more (we stayed almost three) at the chateau. In terms of value it would be extremely hard to beat.
