                                    Serenity in Costa Rica

                                    5 of 5
If you are looking for a place off the beaten path in Costa Rica, for a quiet getaway this is the place. We loved sitting in the back yard and seeing many varieties of tropical birds. iguanas, and much more. The estero azul river is just down a short path from the house. There is a dock too. We were excited that the owner let us use the two person kayak. We Kayaked a total of 5 miles on two different days of the trip. We were able to go on our own tour of the river and see the birds, waterfowl, small crocs, etc... We saw many people on paid pontoon tours of the river. We were excited to have the opportunity to take the tour on our own for free! The lodging was fantastic! The A/C worked great. The pool was refreshing. There were bicycles available, we didn't end up using them. Towels are apparently provided here, but they were all very old and looked like they had been to the beach a time or two. No wash cloths or hand towels to be found. Sierpe is a very secluded town. It took us about 20 minutes of driving to get to the town from the nearest highway. There are some day excursion companies in the town of Sierpe. You might want to book a trip with one of them if you are spending a long time in Sierpe. In the town of Sierpe, there's not really anything to do. We went to La Perla rentals and booked the Corcavado boat ride/ guided hike. Jorge the owner, gave us a rate of $80 a person USD. It was worth every penny to see Corcavado. We had Robbie and Luis as our guides. We were in Sierpe for 4 nights. We ate out at La Perla restaurant two times.... It was just ok. One night, we drove to Palma Norte and bought groceries to cook at the house. One night we drove an hour North to Uvita and ate at Restaurante La Dona. Delicious big portions. I would highly recommend seeing Ballena Nacional Parque if you are near Uvita. Beautiful beach. I highly recommend that you rent a car if you stay here. Also, as a general rule, I recommend that you rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle in Costa rica. This property didn't require 4 wheel drive to get to it, but there is about 2 miles that you will drive on. I highly recommend this rental.

                                    Unique adventure

                                    4 of 5
Well, once we found it, things improved. The directions were by no means clear and there are no signs to help. The road in is HORRIBLE & SCARY and we turned back a couple of times before we decided this had to be it. 4x4 vehicle is a MUST since the road is very rough and full of good size rocks. One part of the road is washed out near a stream that is 12 feet below the road and there is just enough for the vehicle to pass. We finally found the locked gate and the key was on the opposite side from where we were told we would find it. Owner met us at the parking spot and he helped us with our luggage. It was the only time we saw him all week. A house keeper (Anna) came mid-week to change bedding etc... We did not see any monkeys at the tree house all week but we were gone a lot. Every morning around 4 am the howler monkeys began their noises but we never saw them. There were insects all the time but despite the size of some, they were harmless. No mosquitoes while we were there. We used the netting over the bed where the two college girls slept because the bugs freaked them out. Some tiny ants occupied the second level bedroom, so the girls slept in the bed pictured on the main level. Showers worked well, limited hot water but as warm as the weather was we did not need it. There were some bats occupying cool dark areas of the Tree House but they did not bother us other than some droppings on one counter. We did not find a microwave to use and the safe key did not work. The flush toilets worked well, as did the range & refrigerator/freezer. Overall, I would suggest that the listing be updated to reflect the fact that the road in is very rough and a 4x4 would be needed and time frames be adjusted. It took a good 10 minutes to get from the highway to the Tree House. Puerto Jimenez is another 10-12 minutes once you reach the highway. The property was indeed clean. Wifi worked well but it was slow, so don't plan on streaming or doing lots of complex work via the internet. Communications with Blondie were not the best. We got some messages that were actually not for us and several messages that she said that were sent to us never arrived. But it all worked out. Blondie did provide a great deal of help arranging for our car and booking a couple of tours for us. This is an opportunity for a great adventure. Those who don't like insects or bats will freak out but you won't need an alarm clock. The howler monkeys will see to that.
