                      Recent Mal Pais Reviews

Stop Looking. There's No Better Place Than This.

                      5 of 5
Villa Casa Blanca is gorgeous. It's immaculate, well furnished, tastefully decorated, perfectly maintained and it has the best view from the hills above Mal Pais that you can get. Just look at the pictures! Yet pictures don't do justice to the lovely sunsets, the sparkling sea, the long stretch of beach and the rich shades of jungle green that you see from Casa Blanca. Seven of us showed up for a week at the end of June: three 50+ parents, two 25-year-old and two 18-year-old offspring. Davie and Liz, the caretakers who live a scant 5 minutes away were there to welcome us and to answer any questions we had about Casa Blanca and about the activities available in the Puntarenas area. It turns out that they keep the house clean and are available to provide excellent meals if you pay for the groceries. They were able to provide pretty much whatever we wanted such as ATV rentals, directions to (and the best times for) the best beaches and restaurants. And there were some excellent restaurants in this out-of-the-way part of Puntarenas. The roads aren't paved and you need 4 wheel drive to get around, and there are jungle animals and birds all around, but there are hard-working Ticos (Costa Ricans) and ex-pats of numerous nationalities that give you an international choice of breakfast, lunch, dinner along with bars, water activities, jungle treks, horseback riding and lots of other good stuff. Of course, you can choose to stay at Casa Blanca to eat, swim, listen to music, watch movies, watch hundreds of butterflies, a few iguanas, and gorgeous sunsets and seascapes. The house is equipped with all the conveniences of modern living. One more thing. The owner Mike is a great guy. He seems willing to do whatever is needed to make sure that everything will go smoothly for his guests. He emailed us a complete brochure detailing schedules, directions, restaurants and the activities/attractions available in the Puntarenas peninsula. Although he was busy working in London, he made his phone number and email address available to us and was on call to make sure that nothing went wrong with our trip. He didn't have to do that. He's an extremely gracious person and I've never met a more accommodating property owner. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. You will find it very, very hard to leave Casa Blanca. I am really stoked on this place and will be back. I very highly recommend to you both the Villa and the Mal Pais/Santa Teresa area.

Green Jungle, Blue Sky, & Sparkling Water

                      5 of 5
Villa Katino is one of those.... special places that exists in this world. If you're reading this review, you've probably just looked at the pictures and said, "wow" to yourself. Let me be the first to tell you that what you are seeing from your computer is only a fraction of the experience you'll have. This is truly a unique oasis. Vistas - I've reviewed lots of other homes in the area and the views from Villa Katino are probably the best... and definitely the most special. The design of the pool overlooking the coast line makes it hard to look anywhere else. Your eyes will be glued to the landscape. Few homes offer such a unique view of Green Jungle, Blue Sky, & Sparkling Water. Experience - The experience of driving up the road to the house was exhilarating. You spend 10 minutes going up twisting turns of the mountain getting glimpses of the landscape through the trees. When you finally arrive at the top of the mountain where Villa Katino sits, you have this realization that you've reached the pinnacle of the entire Nicoya Peninsula. Convenience - For being so secluded and on top of a mountain, there is still a level of convenience. Amenities are a short drive away and the Pescadería Mal País is right at the bottom of the mountain providing the freshest fish for you to cook back in Villa Katino. Buying fish that was just caught and grilling it in the open kitchen as the sun was setting was one of the best experiences of the trip. The House - The house was recently built and is a perfect mix of modern surrounded by nature! You can tell that Tino put his blood, sweat, and tears into building this property and cares for it meticulously. The design of the downstairs shower was one of my favorite details. You are inside, yet have the feeling that you are surrounded by nature. The Host(s) - Tino was a superb host who was extremely caring and made sure we had everything that we needed. He took his time to tell us all about the house and show us around. His presence was friendly, welcoming, and he went above and beyond to make sure that we had the best experience possible. Perhaps if you're lucky you'll meet 'the other host', Max the Dog. Max is the neighbors dog who rules the top of the mountain and may come hang out with you. He ended up being our protector and loving pet for the week. (Max is not his real name… we never did find out what his real name was 😉 ) Villa Katino will hold a memorable & special place in your heart
